Herbert Baglione π§π· New Paintings β’ Exhibition News, by remirough on Dec 9, 2009 10:22:27 GMT 1, Bit surprised this hasn't got a mention here yet. If it has and I just missed it, please simply ignore the thread. FIFTY24SF Gallery Proudly Presents
βThe Dark Waveβ
New Works by Herbert Baglione
Brazilian artist Herbert Baglione has been a strong interest in the South American graffiti movement for more than ten years. Inspired by Brazilβs street culture, Baglione started experimenting with new ways to look at his urban environment of Sao Paulo and provoked dialogue about his fresh perspective on urban artwork. Alongside these efforts are Baglioneβs distinctive mural designs and stretched figures representing humans and aliens. These are often balancing elongated and rounded extremes with dramatic iconic symbols such as familiar urban architecture. Influenced by his older brother, Baglione began painting at the age of three, and has found his greatest interest in provoking themes such as death, individualism, family, and chaos. These complex themes alongside his distinctive style have given Baglione deserved recognition in the international graffiti scene. βThe Dark Waveβ features new sketches and paintings on canvas on display at FIFTY24SF Gallery from December 10, 2009 β January 28, 2010. (Images lifted from email and website)
Herb's amazing... I hope they do another book for this. His last Upper Playground book is one of my favourite books ever. Such a talented artist and an all round lovely bloke too. I was a bit sad not to see him in the new Laz show.

Herbert Baglione π§π· New Paintings β’ Exhibition News, by origo on Dec 9, 2009 13:12:23 GMT 1, Also a big fan, think his work is so beautiful, thereΒ΄s a certain silence/peace to his art. If anyone havenΒ΄t seen the video UP made the last time he exhibited there I recommend you go have a look.
DoesnΒ΄t get much better.

Herbert Baglione π§π· New Paintings β’ Exhibition News, by lee3 on Dec 9, 2009 23:16:34 GMT 1, Wow, am I out of the loop. Not only do I have a Baglione ink but this show is in my backyard and I had no idea. There are 200 works on paper in this show available for $250 per- that's nice this day in age. Again, thanks for the heads up.

Herbert Baglione π§π· New Paintings β’ Exhibition News, by RPM on Dec 9, 2009 23:24:41 GMT 1, The new work is AMAZING!!! Wish I could grab a canvas, but hoping to get a couple of the sketches. Actually, they are more like true drawings then throw away sketches (many are graphite and acrylic on paper, others just graphite on paper). And they are a steal at $250 each. Although, viewing 200 sketches is a bit overwhelming, especially when you're at work ...

Herbert Baglione π§π· New Paintings β’ Exhibition News, by spirit on Dec 11, 2009 0:19:27 GMT 1, Just bumping this as the show is today and there is a selection of 150 original sketches/drawings by Baglione that are being sold for a very reasonable $250 dollars each by the gallery. As rpmoore4 says above, I highly recommend sending Lynzy at Fifty24SF an email so you can get a look at the sketches. currently most of them are still available and there are some absolute beauties. However the show is this evening and I am sure many of them will go quickly then.
Compared to the prices being charged for prints at the moment, $250 is extremely good value for an original by an artist of this callibre imo. Having not bought any art this year, this is the second thing that has made me dust off the credit card in a week. (The first was a Parla St. Giles)
Check it out.

Herbert Baglione π§π· New Paintings β’ Exhibition News, by lee3 on Dec 11, 2009 17:29:36 GMT 1, Nice Spirit, I dig it. I grabbed one too though not as clean because it reminded me of Franz Kline which is a somewhat odd coincidence given much of his last show was painted on Yves Klein blue. I'm going to stop by the show after work and see what I think of the sketches and paintings in person.

Herbert Baglione π§π· New Paintings β’ Exhibition News, by spirit on Dec 11, 2009 17:46:32 GMT 1, Thanks Lee. I absolutely love it - it was one of the cleanest there but it's the pick of the bunch for me. It feels more like a complete piece than a sketch somehow.
Some of the characters and (and deconstructions of them) remind me a little of Blu's drawings. The face in your drawing for example.
If you're are dropping by the show it would be great to see some pics!

Herbert Baglione π§π· New Paintings β’ Exhibition News, by lee3 on Dec 11, 2009 17:53:21 GMT 1, >>>If you're are dropping by the show it would be great to see some pics! <<<
I did not bring my camera with me to work, my apologies. Perhaps i'll return over the weekend with my gear in tow. I'm so ridiculously low on wall space as it is that it's silly to be buying art with a growing stash in storage that I simply can't part with out of love. My favorite painting (from jpeg) of the show is already spoken for but who knows what will happen when i get there. My wife looked at the paintings and drawings last night (thruth be told, i expected more from the sketches on the whole) and asked me please not to buy more without calling first. Those paintings imo need to be studied, as a jpeg is hopeless at conveying there feel. We'll see...

Herbert Baglione π§π· New Paintings β’ Exhibition News, by rkitek on Dec 11, 2009 18:29:09 GMT 1, Lee, even if you can't post pics I'd be interested to hear what you think about the paintings when you see them in person. Interesting point out the Franz Kline aspect of the drawing you picked up -- hadn't thought of that.
I picked up a drawing myself which I really like as it's got a bit more detail than some of the others and feels very representative of his work:

And seriously folks, considering the amount of money people are willing to spend on prints, these are a steal! $250 for an original piece from one of the masters of Brazilian street art. Merry Christmas to me!

Herbert Baglione π§π· New Paintings β’ Exhibition News, by RPM on Dec 11, 2009 21:22:47 GMT 1, Thanks rkitek.
I agree. I think rather than focusing on print releases, it would be nice if more artists (and galleries especially) recognized that there's a ton of "newbies" out there that are being introduced to the world of art. I understand that sometimes a print is the best alternative when the originals are simply not in the realm of being affordable to the average person. The recent Parla and Choe print releases are perfect examples of that. But I also think more artists should consider putting out affordable original works to help foster their fanbase.
To me, there is nothing like the feeling of looking on your wall and seeing a beautiful piece of art. The only thing that, in my opinion, makes it better is knowing that you are the only one in the world with that image - not 50, 100, 500, etc. other people. It just makes it that much more unique and special.
Just my $.02. Anyhow, I truly applaud HB and Fifty24SF for putting this all together. Again, $250 for a framed OG is about as good as it gets, especially in these economic times ...
