Banksy in San Francisco, by Hanging Around on Apr 26, 2010 0:30:14 GMT 1, i think you have totally missed the point here, prints and canvases are not adverts, they are the products street art is a form of advertising, whenever someone sticks something up on the street, it is promoting either themselves as an artist, or their point of view, or a subject they think needs addressing, which is all fine, its the reality of the situation however, what you need to take into consideration is the intent of the work and that is what has separated banksy from other street artists i believe the intent of these street works is mainly as needless PR for the film, because for the most part, they are old recycled ideas and stuff that has been done before - if they wern't for promotion purposes, then whats the point? someone mentioned its for new fans, but 'underground' street artists shouldn't be concerned about attracting new fans - if there is nothing new to say, why say anything at all? its interesting someone posted the video 'the joy of being sold nothing' because that was very much what older banksy was about (although undoubtedly there was still some good PR going on back then) now i think we're seeing a new mainstream, commercial banksy i think you need to listen to what Banksy has to say! "if you want to make a picture, make a living out of selling pictures, then you have to paint things on canvasses, and then put them up for people to buy them. But I guess what I learnt is that if I paint pictures, they're kind of like the tea towels and the ashtrays of my work really, you know, like the souvenirs of the work. The work is the real thing, and then some people with money will buy that thing on a canvas to go in their kitchen 'cause it looks okay....." Canvas/prints/films are the teatowels/ashtrays/adverts so the man can do what he does and what he loves. end of story.
this makes no sense - how are they the adverts if he admits he needs to sell them in order to be able to do the street work? surely that proves my point that they are products? the street work is the real work yes, but the art he sells to fund it are surely products
although it is hard to argue with someone that ends a post with 'end of story' as there is nothing else to say...

Banksy in San Francisco, by krypto on Apr 26, 2010 1:20:49 GMT 1, theres no real end.. its the never ending story !!
i guess its down to mindset .. i see the 'product' as you call it (canvas/print/film etc) as the 'advert' or 'the promotional material' for the street activity . The street activity in my view is the 'product' of selling the adverts to the punters ... its turning capitalism on its head. I can see why people may view it the other way around , that imo is because we have been brainwashed into the capitalist/consumerism system of belief.

Banksy in San Francisco, by otomi on Apr 26, 2010 2:56:23 GMT 1, I just finished my trip to all six pieces and have to say they are great pieces - there are many people at each one of them and everyone is enjoying them - great mood and each one is still around no robbo not painted over or cut out - this is what it is about - not getting all the hating - even if it is an ad for his movie better than 99% of the ads around - some eople might just feel he is not cool anymore because more people know about him - like in school once everybody like s a band it is not cool anymore

If the seller would have been willing to ship to the US I know you would have had a 'lil more competition... Congrats!

i am totally confused, banksy doesnt turn capitalism on its head, and if you think he does, then your living in a fantasy world - infact what is happening now with the artist is pretty much the festival print playing out in real life

IMO you are reading into this print , and understanding what Banksy is about through the eyes of a Capitalist/Consumer. As i said , we cant help that cos that mindset is imprinted into us all our lives. All of the commodities are Adverts for Banksy . The end product is the street work.

Banksy in San Francisco, by otomi on Apr 26, 2010 17:27:52 GMT 1, Here is my loot from my Banksy field trip.
The Bird - Love the use of the environment. The parking lot replaced nature and all is left are car horns in stead of birds signing. I think that's why the bird makes the horn noise. Most pictures I have seen have missed the actual tree. It's a classic. Also note the two poles the tree comes out of.
The Native American - This one explains itself. It is fantastic. When I took the picture a homeless Native American walked by and said that is me. Very uncomfortable moment. What would I give to have this as a print. Looks like Banksy also added the sign.
Love and Peace - Great topic in SF. I also think this might be FDR checking on healthcare which he tried to establish with his new deal ages ago. Lovely piece draws a big crowd. (40 people when I was there)
The Rat - Essential Banksy. Clearly using a Pilot marker SUPER SELL OUT!
The Line - Very nice and huge. Would like to know if the line goes all the way around.
Good When Framed - Most likely a comment on the immediately stolen LA piece.
I had a great time finding them and looking at them and so did everyone I met.
Thank for posting the addresses here is my final list: Sorted in a way to have the shortest distance to walk/ride/drive. Rat - Howard x 9th The Bird - Erie and Mission St. Native American - Sycamore x Mission Nice When Framed - 849 Valencia 19th/20th Draw the Line - 1653 Haight street Peace + Love - Commercial & Grant

Great post Otomi! I have been waiting for someone to take a pic of the bird/trunk at the right angle so the treetop behind is in the right place - yours is the first I have seen that did! thanks.

Banksy in San Francisco, by lc3 on Apr 26, 2010 22:33:27 GMT 1, Nice pics. That Mouse & Crossbones Rat is so close to my old house. Would've been nice to have it there before I'd moved. I can't remember who used to be up on that spot, but it'd been that green for a while.
SF City Hall must be in a bind, knowing it's great having these pieces in the city and also having such a heavy graff clean-up stance right now. But maybe (I think) they'll allow them to stay... This year SF's even taken some of their graffiti removal budget to pay writers to piece walls, so at least someone's aware that just buffing walls over isn't the only way to go.
I figure a few of those pieces will last. The rooftop pieces probably will. I think the neighborhoods will rally to keep them. The indian, I don't know. That's a place that gets tagged so much. Similarly Peace + Love. While SF has some of the best writers in the world, there're a lot of taggers and a lot of kids who have no respect, or likely think it'd be badass to bomb a Banksy.
But of course, if that wasn't part of the game, it'd be different game.
Speaking of which:
Regarding comments on the film advert pastings. Yeah, it's a weird one. Just presumption, but I'd think he'd probably be the first to say it's a particularly odd place he's wound up: Actually being responsible for one of the core things that he was rebelling against with his illegal work. That's what I'd thought the NY Rat billboards were about... His making a point on being in a position to be able to buy the privilege of "getting up." And now with the film adverts posted, in a sense, it's come full circle. I don't know about other cities, but in my neighborhood, a lot of walls were covered with those posters. And yeah, right along with the other movie & TV postings and the beer and jeans ads...
I'm not quite sure what I think about it today... But I do know it's a weird one.
