Nick Walker • TMA Hollywood, by aginghippie on Feb 24, 2008 19:13:15 GMT 1, theoretical question....by doing this, do they drive the prices up on the pieces because not as many are sold? or drive the prices down because there is less buy/sell activity, less hype? The price will go up. Collectors hold work for longer and so the size of the available pool shrinks. As more people become interested the demand rises but the available work rises slower so demand outstrips supply.
Can prices survive without the hype? It's the interesting phase where you find out whether people are buying your work for a quick buck or because the genuinely like it. If they like it there is no problem. Part of the gallery's role is to find the people who like it.

Nick Walker • TMA Hollywood, by argon on Feb 26, 2008 21:15:52 GMT 1, would like to think this would deter people from selling but guess what, 3000 for a 650 print sounds alot nicer than being "blacklisted" from a gallery you will probably not even go to for another year. and even if that is the case, its not like they remembered your face, so next time they have something the resellers will merely bring cash and give a fake name. now if they start asking for ID when buying prints and paying cash that might be a bit of a start.

You don't have to make it impossible, just sufficiently painful that they go elsewhere to an easier target. As this market becomes more stable and proper registers are kept (as Seth is doing) it will become progressively more difficult for the flippers.

Some people on here want to get real wake up and smell the coffee!

How much are you selling yours for then?
I realise this goes on but it doesn't mean I have to like it - especially when someone buys and tries to tout it to real fans within a week of it selling out. Sell it on eBay but don't come here to dangle it infront of us with a massive price tag whilst we're still gutted about missing out on the initial release...

chief and hlarmy, just say "no thanks" and move on, no need for insults. If you are gutted about missing out, then either ask for a kind forum member to sell you theres at cost, or try and negotiate to buy one that is acceptable to both you and the seller.

Fair point, I for one are critical of the amount of agro floating around the forum and here I am joining in!! It just gets to me...

Nick Walker • TMA Hollywood, by gebeau31 on Feb 20, 2008 16:14:33 GMT 1, Just to clear the air...I have been selling some original art lately, and someone approached me about trading for one of my pieces since they couldn't afford to buy it. I traded the art to get this print after seeing what it was selling on eBay, and hoping I could get a similar price for it. I did NOT purchase this directly from the gallery solely in an attempt to flip it. I don't know if that makes much of a difference with some of you...but thanks for the name-calling anyways.

Nick Walker • TMA Hollywood, by gebeau31 on Feb 20, 2008 17:40:53 GMT 1, Wow, you found me...oh so terribly impressive, since last time I checked, I wasn't hiding. I signed my first post, and my last name is my userID. Very impressive detective work, indeed. And yes, I often buy stuff to flip if I think I can make a profit and then use that money towards OGs. That doesn't change the fact, though, that I did NOT buy this print directly from the gallery. I traded a $2000 piece of art for it. Feel free to contact Carmichael Gallery to see if I was one of the original buyers of the print.
