Have to say I see the similarities in some of the work. But rather than bitch about the similarities being 'rip offs' - maybe we could open this separate thread to let folk take a look at Logan's stuff.
Some of it is amazing. See what you think.

Logan Hicks πΊπΈ Stencil Artist β’ Photographer β’ Street Art, by victorwilliams on Jan 30, 2012 20:02:53 GMT 1, Personally I'm a big fan of Logan's work. He sits alongside the likes of banksy, obey and dface in my eyes, in being one of the first artist that really excited me then I first saw his work. I've got an orginal hanging in my place and I'm currently looking at his vastly underrated print 'sunset boulevard' at my Mums house. (is that the prints name)

Logan Hicks πΊπΈ Stencil Artist β’ Photographer β’ Street Art, by Agent Provocateur on Jan 30, 2012 20:04:19 GMT 1, Logan's work is madness, when I first saw it 'round 07 I couldn't believe someone could paint with so much texture and detail through stencils! The thing that does it for me now is that once I got over the technique, they stand alone as paintings in their own right, totally forgetting how they were painted.
Am definitely looking forward to his new show at the Outsiders.

I came accross his work in 06 as did a few other members (on the other forum) I think the deserved hype created then got a few galleries involced. My father-in-law even has two OGs on his wall.

I know what you're saying dlton, and to be honest it's what I thought about a few photo realistic stencilists before finding out about their technique. Some obviously use that filter in photoshop that breaks a photo down into distinct gradients, but most I've seen actually do it by hand! Indigo is a great example, her work is pretty similar (with the fine gradients) and she hand traces each layer onto tracing paper/acetate by eye! Personally I think it takes amazing patience and skill to create just one canvas on Logan's scale whilst still keeping in mind it's an emotional work of art not just a means to an end.

I was wondering, iv always thought you cut your stencils by hand, someone said to me recently that he thought they were laser cut. Can you shed any light? Keep up the good work and good luck with the show at Outsiders.

All Logan's stencils were photographed by him and then hand cut until around 2007/8 when he developed serious carpal tunnel syndrome making it impossible to continue in the same style. He focussed on photography for a while and sought ways to develop his style without the need for 12 hour days of hand cutting. He discovered the laser cutter and has since utilized it in his new work, using it as just one of many tools in his trade. Considering he pretty much invented the multi layered photorealist stencil and produced images using this technique for years, I guess he also didn't feel the need to continue. I think the Carpel Tunnel issue was a blessing in disguise because his style has developed enormously since then.
In short, he's a legendary stencil and street artist with the respect of all his peers, he's an ambassador for the scene and is an absolutely authentic voice in urban art throughout the world.
Respect

In the meantime.. there's a rare 9 part talk he did for Nuart up on our youtube channel as well as a couple of other timelapses. www.youtube.com/nuart07

Logan certainly has a great end product - i'm not fussed if he doesn't use 50 scalpel blades on each piece.

For me the art is the original photograph, the laser cut stencil not so much, but it's dependent on the image I'd say and effect from creating as a stencil. If I'm honest I struggle with saying that it has soul, but that's just my own opinion at the end of the day. Logan from reading his words certainly has passion and I respect that.

Logan Hicks πΊπΈ Stencil Artist β’ Photographer β’ Street Art, by mayhem on Jan 31, 2012 0:14:10 GMT 1, I have been having a good look at past work and am very impressed with what I have seen. Not sure how I have missed it either. I see nothing wrong with using a laser to cut them, or with moving forward with technology and using it to its advantages. The Art work is normally created before it hits the canvas. What method and media is used in its execution is down to the Artist. It is our choice if we like it. It is a shame, some people think that using Photoshop or digital editing software is an easy way to make Art. Well it's easy to use a pencil and paper, doesn't mean its easy to draw.
