Mine was Mainzer Strasse - Berlin. 3000 cops 5000 rioters - went on for a week. The police "evicted" a whole squatted block in '91(?). It was the end of an era. West Germany established law and order in East Berlin. There were two years were everyone could do everything he wanted to. I think you had some good ones in London too.

English society never has really been one for riots - I think this passage from George McDonald Frasers Flashman novels examplifies the English attitude to riots and the contrasting French attitude nicely.

how can anyone be proud of a riot , brainless cowards who think theyre the beesneez , cool and tough cos they can throw a brick , bottle etc at a copper on a horse 100 yards away and when they get a whack want to moan about police brutality . why no trouble when 1/2 million demonstrate for country alliance,
poll tax , mayday , stonehenge rioters if they love it so much just go and support the away team at ninian park every fortnight, stand as close to the home supporters as poss and spend ninety mins abusing them go outside and see how tough you are

Was going to write at length about class struggle, the disenfranchised and the abuse of power by the ruling elite but will settle with calling you a cock instead...

I'm also wondering how you could have a 'favourite' riot - a peaceful demonstration maybe, but a riot in my mind involves people getting hurt (on both sides) property smashed, innocent bystanders being terrified......what's to celebrate about that?

Surely by stating that this or that riot was your favourite - your stating that you revel in the mayhem and violence involved, rather than the no doubt legitimate grievance that caused the riot in the first place.

perhaps we should clarify what exactly is a riot,
anti fascist marches have ended in riot,
suffragettes even rioted to help get woman the right to vote
blacks rioted in anti racism riots in america
i dont think people set out to riot it happens as a response/ reaction to actions beyound their control
the Petterloo masacre is an example of a demonstration ending in riot, although the riot act was not read it could be argued was a riot.

even ramblers on kinder scout did not set out for a riot it was the authorities whos use of violance ended in riot, this is sometimes the case for the cause of riot.
although Peterloo was a tragic day it was days like this that gave us rights we enjoy today.
thus is one of my favorite riots.
