"borrowed" image : cool conclusion (scroll down), by Jef Aerosol on Oct 17, 2007 12:17:52 GMT 1, Funny : we discussed the question of being copied, plagiarized etc... in another thread (can't remember which one...) and my gallerist Anne Vignial has just sent me a link to a blog showing pics of a stencil that was obviously copied from my "sitting boy" ! She says it's in Iran, but I can't find any contact in the blog... I'd send him a mail, and that guy might decide to be a bit more "personal" in his next stencils ! At the same time, as I said in that other thread, once we "offer" images on the street, they don't really belong to us any longer... And maybe I should just feel honoured of being copied !?
Have a look (scroll a bit down to see the sitting boy, there are 3 or 4 photos of him !) : www.ice-punk.blogspot.com/
here's one :
and here's mine :
see how the cutting of the details in the body are exactly the same !?
AMAZING, ISN'T IT ?
I'd be interested in knowing what you guys would do in such a case... What would be your reaction ?

"borrowed" image : cool conclusion (scroll down), by Jef Aerosol on Oct 17, 2007 12:44:11 GMT 1, yes indeed, this is the reason why I confess having mixed feelings about that ! I'm in between a bit of anger and saying thank you to the guy for having copied my work ! Actually, I'd just like to chat with him and advise him on his future works, so that he could carry on stencilling and improving his own personal style... I don't resent him but need to exchange a few words, in a cool and relaxed way...

I completely agree that anyone that has the balls to put up a work in Iran should be praised. Though isn't it a bit sad that someone has gone to all of the effort of cutting a stencil and risked their liberty putting it up, but can't come up with an original design? Seems a bit of a waste to me. For me art is about personal expression, if you're slavishly copying someone else's work then that's simply lacking. You could argue that the placement or the subtle differences give this work new meaning, but in this case I don't think so.
That said, as this is a street piece and there is no commercial exploitation, I too would take this as a great compliment and let it ride.
There is obviously an interesting wider debate about the value of copyright and how far this applies to street works, but will hold fire on that for now.

"borrowed" image : cool conclusion (scroll down), by Jef Aerosol on Oct 17, 2007 13:50:41 GMT 1, Once again, i want to make my point very clear and I recommend you'd read my first post again : I do feel flattered and honoured and also feel that hitting the walls in Iran is something in itself... I said that I'd love to get an opportunity of chatting with that guy, in order to advise him about future works that could be more personal... No resentment or anger on my part, on the very contrary, only a wish to communicate with that person... And as I said before, I deeply believe that once we've put a picture on a wall, it doesn't "belong" to us any longer ! So, i don't really understand your words, Cashman, when you tell me : "grow up mate . He's hardly gona effect your status" I never mentioned my "status" and this is the least thing I'm worrying about !!! As for growing up, well, at nearly 51 years old, I think I AM a grown-up now !!! lol !

From the same artist, in Iran, not Paris.. it's hardly the sign of artistic genius cutting a stencil of a boy with his arms around his knees. I'd go so far to say that this is far more relevant and a daily sight on the streets of Tehran. Context and placement of a stencil nearly always changes meaning. As this image is a recurrent theme in the guys arsenal of works, i'd be surprised if it was influenced by Jefs work.. probably very unlikely that he's heard of him.

"borrowed" image : cool conclusion (scroll down), by Jef Aerosol on Oct 17, 2007 14:17:50 GMT 1, Nuart, you said :
<<it's hardly the sign of artistic genius cutting a stencil of a boy with his arms around his knees>>
Oh my god, I'm at a loss now ! I never pretended I was an artistic genius !!! I just don't know what to say now, this thread is taking a very weird direction ! Let's all cool down as I have a feeling we actually all agree on the main points !
Nuart, you may be right, but if you look at the photos i first posted, you will see that he obviously used the body of my "sitting boy" !!! The cutting is exactly the same, all the details are the same ! It's evident that he used a photo of my stencil he must have found on the web... But i agree with you, his work remains extremely relevant ! Just imagine my surprise when I saw "my" stencil cut and used by somebody else ! He changed the head and also the shoes, but the rest is the mere copy of my stencil... And it's all very well, just a bit of a shock (not a negative one !) when I discovered the pictures this morning. See what I mean ? It isn't the same thing as the rats, for instance, that we talked about the other day : Blek did some, i did some and Banksy too, and loads of other people... But I didn't know of Blek's rats when i did mine and maybe Banksy didn't know of Blek's and my rats when he did his. Besides our rats are very different ! It isn't the same thing as if somebody really takes a pic of the very stencil and just cuts it , see ?

"borrowed" image : cool conclusion (scroll down), by mike hunt on Oct 17, 2007 14:36:37 GMT 1, Jeff - I think you are being honest. If I had worked hard on a design only to see someone copy it so that most the details were identical, I would also feel a mixture of shock, anger and flattery. Its annoying when you've built a name up over years, but on the other hand, even with the copying, this person isn't nearly as accomplished as you (when you compare how the pieces have been executed).I think having a quick chat or just forgetting about it is the best way. Your post cannot be compared to dfaces comments because you've been more open and honest. Anyone who thinks their reaction would be different is fooling themselves (or has never had their artwork copied!)

Seriously I would feel pretty good about myself if someone thought my design good enough to copy, your work is now truely international, and lets face it you are'nt going to make a special trip to Iran to paint it, are you!? The only time it would piss me off is if it had been done badly, without doubt it is not as detailed or as 'clean' as your stencils but it is also a pretty good copy!!

"borrowed" image : cool conclusion (scroll down), by mcnuts on Oct 17, 2007 14:45:29 GMT 1, i dont think anyone here is taking a swipe at Jeff and I think it’s a good point for debate to point this out.
I dont agree with nuart. Take a closer look at the stencil. The soes and hair are different but the lines in the body are almost exactly the same. To me, it really seems like too much of a coincidence for there not to be some overlap. However stranger things have happened and so he may not have seen his work.... none the less Jeff isnt looking for royalties here....
What is not being said in the thread is any claim for “I did this first show me respect”. Something that, in another thread on here, D*face is being imho a real cry baby about.
Anyway… back to the art…

"borrowed" image : cool conclusion (scroll down), by Jef Aerosol on Oct 17, 2007 14:52:21 GMT 1, Yep Jonpud, he has put this stencil to excellent use and as Nuart said, the sitting kid is probably more relevant there than here... I totally agree on that...
was just a bit of a surprise when i discovered the pic this morning...
don't know if others among you have exprerienced this ? It's a funny surprise...
Maybe i started the thread a bit too early (5 minutes after discovering the pics) as I was still under the surprise... lol !
In fact this already happened to me in 1986, just after the release of Vite Fait / Bien Fait, the first book about stencils. A friend of mine, Thierry, rang me to tell me he had seen some of my stencils on the walls of Dunkerque, my selfportrait with my signature !!! I had NEVER stencilled there ! He investigated a bit and found out that the authors of the sprayings were schoolboys whose art teacher had studied the book with them, giving them some photocopies of some of the pages of the book ! I got in touch with the teacher (who's now a good friend of mine) and he invited me to come to his class. I met the kids, congratulated them and told them about my work etc... I told them that maybe it would be more exciting for them to make their own stencils and sign their names instead of mine ! Then We started a workshop and I helped them come up with their own works, many of them decided that they wanted to stencil their selfportrait... I came back for a second time after a week or two so that they had time to work on their own and with Jacques, the teacher. Then, we all painted a huge mural in the school yard with all their stencils, selfportraits, etc... and all their signatures ! I loved that experience !
anybody here has ever seen copied stencils of pieces by other stencillers ?
any fake Banksys, for instance ?

I totally agree on that... was just a bit of a surprise when i discovered the pic this morning... don't know if others among you have exprerienced this ? It's a funny surprise... Maybe i started the thread a bit too early (5 minutes after discovering the pics) as I was still under the surprise... lol ! In fact this already happened to me in 1986, just after the release of Vite Fait / Bien Fait, the first book about stencils. peace jef
PS : about the "neg", have just learnt what this term means ! This is something i never check... Actually if I may suggest something, Silky : this system of "karma, points/respect" should be suppressed ! I'm afraid it creates some sort of competition that might not be very healthy... enough grading at school, do we need it here ?

Ah, sorry Jef.... I didn't compare them that closely.. but yeah, be cool if you drop him a mail and offer him some support, can't be easy doing this in Tehran.. I'm sure you'd make his day if you contacted him with some positive words.

Jef, to be fair I had same opinion as you, Silky did try and remove the respect system for a while but it didn't work, it does seem to calm the more undesireable aspects of being a forum member!!
