Sony gift Banksy to Simon Cowell, by walshy on Dec 30, 2009 9:18:38 GMT 1, This has been republished in the press recently. How is a piece that was shown at the Bristol Museum months ago become a 'Commissioned' piece? Please excuse my ignorance - this is a genuine question.
The piece at the show was not a commission, its owned by a forum memeber (just repeating what has already been written in this thread)

the piece photo'd above may well simply be a study for the commissioned piece, from memory it was a collage and the article seems to talk about prints and I guess a canvas. sony may well have commissioned this piece long before the banksy show.

Sony gift Banksy to Simon Cowell, by jon11 on Jan 1, 2010 12:38:29 GMT 1, this is the first kick in the teeth for me of the new year - i went to the show - and really wanted to buy this - i was in the process of trying to do so when someone snatched it away form me - i was doing the deal with dora from POW - literally signing up to buy it - when someone else shouted i'm having that and they bought it - just like that - my fault for being to fucking polite - it was 3k and a collage - so at the time i wasnt that bothered - because it looks a bit crap in the flesh - i think the one at the show may have been a mock up of the real - it was just a cut out of cowell from a magazine stuck on a print and didnt look great - however as soon as i left the show i regretted not buying it
and the haunting goes on -s**t it

Sony gift Banksy to Simon Cowell, by Daniel Silk on Jan 7, 2010 12:04:39 GMT 1, www.mediabistro.com/unbeige/art/american_idols_simon_cowell_given_the_gift_of_banksy_147957.asp
"There are two things the most famous-est street artist of all, Banksy, enjoys: public walls on which to paint stencils onto and celebrities with lots of money behind them. We'd certainly seen that before back a couple of years ago when the mysterious artist swept into the LA art scene and had pieces picked up by the likes of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Now he can add another big ticket sale to his list, as the Mirror has reported that over the holidays, American Idol judge, Simon Cowell, was given a reproduction of Edward Degas' "Rehearsal of the Ballet on Stage" as painted by Banksy and which included Cowell painted in. Executives at Sony were the gift givers, who commissioned the artist based on the British TV personality's apparent love of both Degas and of things more modern and street-y. Here's a brief description of the painting:
"So they got Banksy to mock up one of Degas' most famous works. In the picture, it looks like Simon's deciding whether or not the girl has the X Factor. "He took one look at it and declared it 'hilarious'."
Still no capture of the thief in France who recently grabbed a Degas from a museum in Marsailles, so we're just going to go ahead and say it was either Banksy, looking for inspiration, Cowell, just because he wanted it, or executives from Sony, because Cowell probably has a birthday coming up."

Sony gift Banksy to Simon Cowell, by Daniel Silk on Jan 7, 2010 21:53:48 GMT 1, Does knowing Simon Cowell is a fan of Banksy's work effect how you feel about also having Banksy's up on the wall at home? I just wonder people would NEVER EVER say to their friends - "Yeah this is a Banksy here on my wall Simon Cowell and Robbie Williams also have Banksy's"

Im not sure I understand your question ?? Are you trying to start a debate ? Just because certain celebrity's like an artists work, it doesn't all of a sudden validate the work. Just in case you didn't realize, famous people have bad taste too you know
