Yeah...I think it's easy to look at it this way...he's a git.
Maybe he's just trying to say "don't let it fuck you up". I know...people lose jobs and companies struggle, I'm 100% aware of it, and it's depressing.
But you also have a lot of people not necessarily as affected by it, but they keep going on about "the current climate", and then you have the press, shoving it in our faces over and over... Does that not feed it a little too?
As I said, it's shit for a lot of people, and it's sad, but maybe he's in a way just (in a badly expressed way) trying to say "keep positive as much as you can".

I think niktektonik got it right about the messeage shep is trying to convey. However he (shep not niktektonik) comes over all wrong and ends up sounding like a smug t##t that's saying recession is only in your mind, and if you weren't so lazy it would all be fine.

I'd like to think this was a misrepresentation but I've always been a little sceptical of Shep and his whole propaganda thing. Also I don't trust so called US punk post 85 the likes of fuckin Green Day and all that shite. It all seems a little trite and aren't I so fuckin radical when in fact they are as conservative as the next bloke. Even the Pistols tshirt looks fuckin ridiculous and tired.

In a lot of ways I agree with him. The recession is very difficult for many that have lost jobs. But Those that have been affected by the recession generally fall in two camps. Those that sit around feeling sorry for themselves blaming the recession, the government, and anyone else, and those that take it as an opportunity to re-invent themselves or make themselves better. I've seen people start new businesses, get more education, make new plans, refocus on family etc. Its a hard time right now, but mentally focusing on a recession can lead to a defeatist attitude.

That being said, he does come off a bit smug.

I couldn't own something by someone who I thought was a t**t. Thats a very personal thing for me but it's the way it is. The joy completely goes out of it for me if I think the person who produced it is a wanker. That's why I try to avoid my heroes but I'd like to think my heroes were not out and out c**t. Some may say very idealist and naive on my part but to be honest as I get older I don't give a fuck. I seen most of this stuff before so the idea of something being "radical" has lone gone.

I wonder that a lot of people build up an image of what some of the Artists are like in their heads thats not really based on the facts People like to pin political views and stuff onto these people and then hold them up like some sort of icon.
I don't think Shep has mislead anyone about how he operates, and in this interview he's just being honest about how he feels.

I don't exactly "trust" Shep either, but let's not sh*t all over US punk (post 85), I mean we still have the Dead Kennedy's, Operation Ivy/Rancid, Swinging Utters', Gorilla Biscuts, the Casualities and 7 Seconds (even though these guys are originally from Canada and emigrated to the US while teenagers).
