Swoon & Ron English, by Trismanco on Dec 17, 2007 10:55:46 GMT 1, Thought I'd start a thread on the second wave of Street Artists in Bethlehem - Swoon and Ron English. Just saw the photos go up on the Wall page and was blown away by the final result.
Swoon's paper poem and cloth pockets glued to the wall all containing messages or spaces for people to add their own messages. Her friend Max was taking free polaroid pictures of the kids which they could keep.
Ron went big and bold with billboard sized posters and messages such as "Pardon our Oppression". Good work all round I thought from the New York contingent.

Hi mate, agreed 100%, the Swoon work on the watchtower is probably the most significant and perhaps the best piece I've seen. That particular watchtower is the only one on the section of wall that the IDF no longer man. The locals took serious offense to this particular tower and consistently poured oil onto it a set it ablaze, under considerable risk to themselves. Obviously the tower doesn't burn, it's concrete, but the oil does, and it was enough for the IDF to abandon that post. Great piece !
Twas good to see you out there and involved Trist.

Swoon & Ron English, by Gentle Mental on Dec 17, 2007 11:41:26 GMT 1, never thought much about swoon till lately, felt the work was too "girly" and "folksy" for my liking, i was into the macho/cheeky/ironic/witty D*face/banksy/obey stuff or the arty Micallef/Ian Francis/Guy stuff, you know the minotaurs and uzi and angels with grenades, the dark imageries etc
till i take a good long, hard look... (thanks to you guys!)
now every swoon gives me the goosebumps... there's so much strength and hope in them, i just get terribly emotional every time i see her work...
As far as street art goes, Swoon is from a completely different world.

Swoon & Ron English, by manchestermike on Dec 17, 2007 11:42:09 GMT 1, The Ron English stuff is fantastic - especially the 'Pardon Our Oppression' - one of the best things I've seen there..., the Swoon is, errr, well, pretty much like everything else she's done, infact half of it is EXACTLY the same as the last stuff she's done...

that was one of the first thing that turn me off too.. swoon stuff looking so similar,
but everything is exactly the same as the last stuff... every ian francis is smudgy, every dface is defacing an icon, every micallef is winged and bubblegum, and every banksy is a piss take on establishment. I think it's their unique voice, and it's good that they stick to it, and vary and improve it.
swoon differences are more subtle... it took me a long while to get it.. hope you find it too!

Swoon & Ron English, by Trismanco on Dec 17, 2007 11:58:33 GMT 1, Good to see you out there too Nuart.
The three eyed Santa was made by a local Craftsman in Olive wood from a drawing that Ron made out there. Its now become a superduper limited edition figurine thingey. The moving billboard Guernica's were made at a local advertising print shop using a small second-hand electronic billboard...

To be fair, I'll keep trying... I actually quite like that cut out fish one that's just been released, probably because it's different... If I find it this place will be the first to know ;D
