Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by afroken on Oct 17, 2008 22:14:36 GMT 1, I was there. I looked at it, lusted over it, wanted to buy it. My friend said I was mad so I didn't. I bought a Flower Thrower canvas instead for £120. My friend still laughed at me. Fool.
EDIT: Oh and a BME for £30. He bought one of those too

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by mammal2 on Oct 17, 2008 22:25:38 GMT 1, Good for you afroken. I seem to remember the Queen Vic being flipped on ebay for 600 pounds. Do you have a pic of it in your house/flat. I think I remember the canvas. You got some great years out of it though. You were there at the beginning, and that I respect.

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by afroken on Oct 17, 2008 22:33:19 GMT 1, Thanks man. I think I was very lucky. I remember nothing sold that night apart from the prints. Crazy really. I had an even better opportunity to buy a huge vandalised canvas at the Cargo show earlier that year, and procrastinated for ages over spending £500. I passed in the end. I kick myself for that one. It was stunning.
I don't have a photo of the flower thrower on my wall foolishly, but it's still on the Andipa site:
www.andipamodern.com/DET/DET-4264.HTM
I did buy another large piece with 3 Laugh Now monkeys some time later but that's gone now too I miss that one

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by afroken on Oct 17, 2008 22:52:43 GMT 1, I remember finding out what it was worth one day and after 6 years of being mis-handled it suddenly took on a life of its own. It actually made me feel paranoid having it in my house. When I was tarting it around trying to sell it, I suddenly remembered when I was over the other side of town that I had left it in the back of my car. I dropped everything and grabbed a cab across town to rescue it. I was panicking the whole way there! Weird feeling owning something so small of that value.
EDIT: the day I found out what it was worth was when I found this forum and posted it. I got bombarded with low ball offers that were much higher than I thought it was worth. Luckily I decided to investigate!

Is that your wife and now ~ 6+ year old child? Nice canvas too with a great story. Don't even tell your kid(s) the story about the corrupted oil though.

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by afroken on Oct 17, 2008 23:23:09 GMT 1, That is my now 6 year old indeed, but not my now ex-wife!
Another funny story is that I wanted to buy a friend a signed Banksy print years ago as a birthday present. My (now ex) wife said I was being selfish as it was the kind of thing I would want but he would hate it. She forbade me from buying it. I told him the story recently and he didn't even raise a smile!

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by junkieart on Oct 17, 2008 23:46:50 GMT 1, Nice story, thanks for sharing it with us, cheers afroken. I'm the same but not on the same level, I've had my B's since 03, they were put in ordinary frames at the time and hung casually around the house to enjoy. Then about 2 years ago realized they were worth a small fortune (to me) and I turned paraniod (when leaving for holidays/work anytime really) about them being nicked etc. Which I in a strange way I started to enjoy them less. For me the more they were worth, the more I was scared about losing them. Very odd? I think somethings you can loose the art for there value? Unless your minted, which I'm not! I still love my 03 signed prints but they do worry me, am I the only one? Peace JA

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by afroken on Oct 17, 2008 23:50:02 GMT 1, Exactly my feeling. Having a 30x30cm canvas on my wall worth £40,000 just made me feel sick all the time! If I went on holiday, I'd take it round to my mum's house so she could babysit the bloody thing!

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by junkieart on Oct 18, 2008 0:04:00 GMT 1, Its crazy isn't it, I brought all the B's because I loved them, as I'm sure you did back in the day. And then they become a bind, I don't like to put them on my walls (although they are but no sun, no smoke etc etc), I have to admit had a signed HAND in my down stairs WC for years (Its still A1, if i come to sell it on here ;-) )And my signed QV (numbered lower than 4) in my hall, and the WSM in my living room. Then I found out they could be worth 10's of thousands I thought great and fuck at the same time. There still on my walls but behind museum glass and fully insured. I thing sometimes the money over takes the art. Which is great if you want to sell it, but I love my first B's but they do cause me worry. I know its a nice problem to have but when you don't expect it its a strange problem to have. Peace JA

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by afroken on Oct 18, 2008 0:09:08 GMT 1, Hey at the end of the day that very white canvas hung on a nail on my wall unframed in a smoker's house for 6 years. It got moved around, handled loads, and tossed into a box when I moved house. When I sold it it was mint, but the chances are I would have stuck a knife through it by mistake after I found out its value! I was very very careful after that. You're right though. Intellectually I couldn't possibly justify keeping it whatever way I looked at it.

"Skanky I think you are right that this is only the beginning. Many people think that urban art is a fad. There are people on this board and in the wider community of urban art lovers that will increasingly fill positions of power and importance in our society and their perspective on the world will replace attitudes of today to become the status quo. We are witnessing a significant cultural shift in all areas of the arts, technology and media as those retched baby boomers finally run out of steam and have no choice other than to make room for a new generation (even though that generation is already in its mid to late 30's). Our tastes will become the dominant force in this world and it's only a matter of time before they permeate everything. Our artists will be considered pioneers and people on boards like these will be wondering when their day glow video art installations will get a look in.
That's what I think anyway!"
A very good post this, Afroken. That's why I quoted it in a larger size so no one misses it.

For a relative newcomer, it is good reading (and cringing) about past buys and sells.

there is still the distint possibility that in ten years time we will be looking back saying (cringing) I can't believe you used to be able to get a banksy original for £30k-40k

That may be so. But the difference is that five years ago most of us could afford an original. That is not the case when you're talking tens of thousands.

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by graeme501 on Oct 18, 2008 17:35:09 GMT 1, ok after having a few thoughts floating about and reading dogants post on the laz thread, i dont believe u can trust any banksy auction result
does anyone find it odd that after a few bad results for banksy at auctions, this gets snapped up for a near record price ... who auctually bought the canvas? the last banksy to do well at auction was the BME for £100,000, and guess where that turns up? LAZ, priced at £200,000, he's manipulating the market to keep banksy going and not crashing, and i wouldnt b surprised if he bought the queen vic aswell

Sadly (depending on your point of view I guess) the art market and auction houses have no regulation to guide who can or can't bid. I'm certain that such practices do go on and not only with this relatively "cheaper" (for want of a better word) end of the market. I've had similar thoughts to you on this Graeme, but at the end of the day, Banksy must be one of only a select group living artists to have prints in such a sale and that recognition is in of itself remarkable, considering his roots imo. I agree with you though, that not too much should be read into individual auction results, as it's so easy to manipulate.

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by graeme501 on Oct 18, 2008 18:20:19 GMT 1, very easily to manipulate
thinking back, the last two banksys to make over £100k have been the Bomb Middle England (bought by LAZ) and the tesco flag sketch (bought by LAZ) - compare this to the monkey detonator which reached £40k - what im thinking is that the real value of banksys og's are more in line with the monkey detonator and not 1's that were bought by his agent
also the fact that LAZ was able to show 40 works in the LAZ extravigansa with no new work - if banksy is as successful as he is made out to be, that shouldn't happen

you make yourself sound like a p*ick the more you keep on bashing Laz
