I agree. I know someone prepared to pay that figure, so it must be all the charges on top that tipped the balance.

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by hlarmy on Oct 17, 2008 20:12:49 GMT 1, Is anyone else not slightly surprised that a set of Banksy prints actually made it to the Sotheby's evening sale in the first place; weren't these slightly out of their depth in the first place?

The Kates are special for sure. The Queen Vic is a Grade A original.

Me neither; I don't see the fact that the prints didn't sell as a disaster - the fact that Banksy made it into such a prestigious sale in the first place is good news - the Queen Vic reached a very respectable price. Onwards and upwards I reckon ...
EDIT: Funster, do you work for the tabloids?

I agree, after the 2nd result things certainly looked up. Interesting that Pezlow mentioned on the other thread the quality of the Kate's was below standard, this must have had an effect.

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by skanky on Oct 17, 2008 20:43:37 GMT 1, Monetary value aside apart from possibly the Warhols there is nothing in that sale that I would choose over a good Faile , Micallef, Parla, Neate or Os G. That alone gives me more confidence than any result.

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by Heavyconsumer on Oct 17, 2008 20:45:49 GMT 1, Is it only me who thinks that ยฃ250,000 as a low estimate is a bit high? I know that they have sold individually at astronomical prices over the past year, but print prices do seem to be getting lower across the board, not higher. No doom and gloom imo, just a very optimistic estimate in this climate. And I agree with Hlarmy, there must be positives to take from Banksy prints even appearing in this sale. Are there many living artists whose prints end up there? (genuine question)

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by lee3 on Oct 17, 2008 20:56:20 GMT 1, >>>This really demonstrates how little attention is paid to Dreweatts in the contemporary art world<<<
I've been following contemorary art for a long time and never even heard of them until that first street sale a few months ago.
>>>Monetary value aside apart from possibly the Warhols there is nothing in that sale that I would choose over a good Faile , Micallef, Parla, Neate or Os G. That alone gives me more confidence than any result. <<<
Then you are buying what you love which is great, though i would caution you to take another look at both of these and reconsider. The first because Klein's life was cut way too short and he was miles ahead of most "inventing" international klein blue, covering naked women in said paint and having them roll or jump onto paper or canvases to arrive at many of his compositions. The second because without him, I wonder whether or not we would even know about the artists you listed.

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by skanky on Oct 17, 2008 21:21:28 GMT 1, I always enjoy your posts Lee and find them very informative, in the past you have turned me towards Villegle in a big way. I can honestly say I've not yet seen a Basquiat that has grabbed me but understand the historical importance of the work. I will do a bit of research into Klein. Its just the doom and gloom thats been getting me a bit lately. I will never forget the first time I walked into the Neate PPP exhibition it blew me away, somehow I find the work of our artists more relevant and I still believe we are in the middle of something that will be remembered. There is too much emphasis on short term results from auctions and ebay etc, imo the quality of the work speaks for itself.

Good post Skanky - and I agree with everything you said. Lee's posts are always ones I look out for as his knowledge of art goes a long way past the 'urban' scene, which is one thing that I think is missing on the forum

Great result for Banksy results in major auction.., by afroken on Oct 17, 2008 21:40:30 GMT 1, Skanky I think you are right that this is only the beginning. Many people think that urban art is a fad. I believe it signifies something much bigger: the handover of power (finally) from baby boomers to generation x-ers. There are people on this board and in the wider community of urban art lovers that will increasingly fill positions of power and importance in our society and their perspective on the world will replace attitudes of today to become the status quo. We are witnessing a significant cultural shift in all areas of the arts, technology and media as those retched baby boomers finally run out of steam and have no choice other than to make room for a new generation (even though that generation is already in its mid to late 30's). Our tastes will become the dominant force in this world and it's only a matter of time before they permeate everything. Our artists will be considered pioneers and people on boards like these will be wondering when their day glow video art installations will get a look in.
That's what I think anyway!

Now that is a bitch. I am lucky in that I started picking stuff up in early 06 so I really wasn't there at the beginning. Otherwise, I would be kicking myself. Great, great canvas.
