The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by frantik on Apr 18, 2008 13:35:41 GMT 1, Did anyone else see Nick try to walk through the glass front door? Pretty funny, this was about 10pm so he'd probably had a few by then
Great show though, really enjoyed it. Couldn't believe how good 'llife's too short' looked in the flesh - definitely wish I'd wandered down and joined the queue at about 4am!

The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by insite on Apr 18, 2008 13:50:14 GMT 1, The way that BRP organised the queue and security was exemplary, I was concerned that after going to all the hassle of reorganising my whole family life for two days that I'd somehow find out that in the morning I'd slipped down the queue to #76. Being able to chill out and grab a few hours sleep was priceless.
Was great to meet Nick and thank him for the chance to buy the print, he really is the nice geezer everyone says he is, bought us coffee in the afternoon which was so welcome (wouldn't do me a signed one though ;D)
As always good to make new mates and put a few more faces to avatars, love a bit of banter in the queue, in fact maybe a bit too much I said this to someone and he pissed himself laughing and said "mate you ARE the banter in the queue"
Got a bit worried I'd made a mistake in the afternoon when someone came over and said it's got glitter on it, I know I'm a bit of a magpie for shiny prints but I'm not keen on glitter, then when I walked through the door to get my invoice and saw the print for the first time it stopped me in my tracks. It's quite amazing, I know it gets said a lot that you need to see a print in the flesh but this one you can't possibly assess without seeing it, the colours and the shinyness are balanced to perfection. The only draw back in the print quality of this is that the next BRP release has this to contend with, it's been said before but the BRP print crew are miles ahead of the rest and I truly believe they deserve as much praise for their work as the artists.
Only bad bit for me was that I had to leave at 7pm to get across London and get the last train home (tried to organise it so I could travel back Friday but couldn't). Meant I only really got 15 minutes to drink free beer and look at the art, bit gutting really after 24 hours of travel and waiting, sorry to everyone I didn't have time to say hello to I'll sort it better for Bleks show and bore you stupid then.
One last thing, getting given a free paper on the way to the station opening it up and seeing a report on the V for Vandal projection and knowing in a small way I'd been part of the whole thing.
Bring on the next queue ;D

The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by lover on Apr 18, 2008 14:45:23 GMT 1, I wasn't at the show, but to dismiss some1 as a non art fan, as they did not recognise nick is wrong imo. They may well have been knowledgeable about his art, just not him. I believe its like an author of a book. May love his works, but would not recognise the person if you were stood next to them. Good luck to all that braved the night. Whilst you were queuing I was collecting my tube from Signal gallery. Well worth a visit if you haven't been.

The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by insite on Apr 18, 2008 15:39:52 GMT 1, I may have been a bit previous.
FMA sell on behalf of clients so they DID NOT have eight people queue up for them.
However the cynic in me is still of the opinion that galleries did send staff down as they couldn't get their usual pre orders for this print. I'll be interested to see how many pop up over the next couple of weeks.

Nice to see that this will have the opposite effect from the one that they would want.

None of us like flippers, but theyre everywhere and theyre a part of life.
There are annoyances in every part of life, so lets get over it and move on - in the grand scheme of things theres a lot worse out there.
By the way - i'm not a flipper!!

The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by jonpud on Apr 18, 2008 16:23:25 GMT 1, PUD - You're a special case and love NW, which is wholly admirable and laudable. I think the reference is to the wool wearing, field dwelling, 'baa' making sheep that have followed this movement recently...
Here what you are saying mate and perhaps my post didn't explain itself very well!
Everyone is open to opinion, different likes and dislikes etc! The point I was trying to make is that regardless of whether you like the subject matter of the prrint I can't beleive that someone can post and say 'Having seen the print, I can't see what all the fuss is about' If he really has seen the print then it is so obvious what all the fuss is about, the production quality is simply amazing, never seen anything like this before, it is without doubt a one off unusual piece of art!
It is no secret that I am not a Neate fan, I have nothing in my collection relating to Neate, BUT I can still see what all the fuss is about, he is clearly a talented Artist. Think that's the point I was trying to make!! Hope it's a little clearer.
And just out of interest, I didn't get ANY of the three print releases yesterday, so I am not bigging this up to boost the value of my print! I am probably the biggest Walker fan on here and ended up with nothing, I didn't Q all night and big respect to those who did. I did manage by invite to get into the show an hour early but there were still no prints availabe, point is WELL DONE BRP and I hope all those who were accusing BRP of favoritism etc are eating their words! All 75 prints available to those in the Q and none to us who knew someone!!
Gutted I missed out on this one, certainly aint gonna be paying £10k for it but might have to bite the bullet when it is sitting around the £4-6k mark!!!! Can't see an edition of 76 and this quality selling for much less!!
I did by a little canvas to cheer myself up though!! ;D

Someone in the queue told me a story about this. Somebody who's a long term fan and friend of Nicks had seen the print before the show and fallen for it. They asked Nicks Mrs about getting one put aside as a favour, her answer, can't do it they're all going to the queue not even me and Nick can get one. So yeah big respect to BRP for sticking to their word.

And of course anyone else , haters and likers, whoever really

I'm somewhere in the middle on NW. I generally think you are right Carlito - he's definitely hit on a nerve with the vandal/tma series and I think they are good. Not so sure about the butterfly but each to their own. He's also been around a while and he deserves his success. However, there is a hell of a lot of hype around him right now and I also agree that there is not a huge amount of depth to the work and although I think the images are aesthetically pleasing, I am not sure they will stand the test of time. I also think the idea of Nick Walker prints suddenly being worth what a signed Banksy is worth completely crazy. And I am worried what will happen when the hype dies down and his prices start falling a bit - Could be Micallef all over again - although this time the problem would be caused by crazy hyped secondary market prices. It will also be interesting to see if his future work captures people in the same way as the TMA stuff does - or whether this will be seen as a one hit wonder...only time will tell I guess.

Mate, regardless of what people are attempting to sell them for on ebay, 4-6k is still a ludicrous amount of money to spend on this print. Give it a couple of months until this furore dies down & see what it settles down at. It'll be far less than that, believe me.

The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by sand on Apr 18, 2008 16:58:32 GMT 1, For those who did queue, got the print, and are keeping it..how are you going to frame it?
I was thinking before I saw the print on display at the show..it would look great floated in a white frame (exactly how it was displayed) - but the massive white boarders have put me off doing this and will instead use some mounts.
So now i'm thinking of a double mount; inner mount to be a yellow-ish colour that picks up the colour of the butterfly and have a outer black mount. And a black frame.
Probably a gold ornate frame that has been sprayed black.
Here's something I very quickly came up with (imagine the frame is ornate and black - the online program I used didn't have the option!)
I'll post some pics when it's complete..
So how about everyone else?!

pretty much what you said carlo, Nick's not riding any coat tails he's been around for ages, his work is different and he expresses himself differently as most artists do, otherwise they would be copying...if you want the banksy type of commentary and style buy banksy, if you want something different go with Nick or one of the many others.
Once upon a time banksy's work was cheap as chips and you could choose to wait and buy, in a short space of time it changed, there was plenty of moaning about that too, seem to be a lot of folk with short memories. Nick's work happens to be getting expensive and will probably keep on being so.

Wow, my opinion!? Wouldn't know where to start really. My opinion is that the majority of those who slate Nick don't know what they are talking about!
Nick has been on the scene for years, he is an 'associte' of Banksy and his 'Ratatouille' was a little piss take based upon Banksy's 'Non slip paint' rats.
The Vandal series has been, without doubt his biggest success to date, it appeals to more than just us street art lovers which I beleive is the massive governing factor in the print price increase. Nick is passionate about keeping edition numbers low as he wants all those who own a print to feel they have something a little more exclusve than say a Micallef edition of 1000.
Nick also knows that the Vandal series will have to come to an end before it is flogged to death, there's lots more to this episode but I swore I would keep
Depth of work! It's tongue in cheek, it's funny, it makes me smile, but it also has depth! Speaking to Nick I asked if the Vandal had jumped into the river Thames after bombing the Parliament building, was this why he wasn't stood admiring his work in the painting and hence the bowler hat on the wall, Nick told me that Big Ben was the vandals biggest job to date and he made a quick getaway, after all it's London and a new Bowler Hat wouldn't be difficult to get!
The quality of his stencils are superb, the Butterfly on Metal and the Empire State were amazing!
Don't get me wrong I am not into everything Nick has done, but if you could spend some time with him and see just how over excited he gets working on a new idea, explaining how he came up with it etc you couldn't help but get drawn into his magical world!
I know this post is a bit scatty Carlito but that question would take hours to answer in my one finger type!! ;D It's something easier done in person with a beer in one hand!!
Hi Pud...as a big NW fan I'd be interested in your take on those who say there's not much depth to his work and at the moment he's just 'in vogue' ....my own take is he's proper old school, with some talent and some great images..and hit on a popular theme with his Vandal series - I personally think a picture doesn't have to tell a huge story or a have a great social commentary to warrant being something wonderful to look at...anyways what's your opinion dude? And of course anyone else , haters and likers, whoever really Wow, my opinion!? Nick also knows that the Vandal series will have to come to an end before it is flogged to death, there's lots more to this episode but I swore I would keep Depth of work! The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by spirit on Apr 18, 2008 17:06:11 GMT 1, Gutted I missed out on this one, certainly aint gonna be paying £10k for it but might have to bite the bullet when it is sitting around the £4-6k mark!!!! Can't see an edition of 76 and this quality selling for much less!! Mate, regardless of what people are attempting to sell them for on ebay, 4-6k is still a ludicrous amount of money to spend on this print. Give it a couple of months until this furore dies down & see what it settles down at. It'll be far less than that, believe me.
agree 100% - I would wager that in 6 months you would be able to pick this print up for 2k or less.

And of course anyone else , haters and likers, whoever really I'm somewhere in the middle on NW.
I would agree if edition numbers were the same as Banksy, 150 signed, 500 unsigned etc! You HAVE to remember, the editions are 150 MAX and only 76 of the Butterfly, rareity will keep prices high!!!

The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by jam on Apr 18, 2008 17:11:11 GMT 1, I like Nick's work well enough and appreciate the fact hes 'old school' and has been doing graf for years, I also own a couple pieces as well. That being said, the current market is overblown and will not sustain prices or momentum. Two months ago you couldn't get cost back for any Walker print, and could barely get cost back on a hand sprayed piece. There were prints and originals available that just sat and collected dust because very few people if any wanted to buy them. NOW all of a sudden (and with ONE auction record to site), everyone thinks he is huge and a must have. Give me a break!
Also consider the strong possibility the prices on ebay are BS. You don't know if any of them are actually selling (cash changing hands) at these prices, or if people are messing with the auctions by hitting the BIN... or further, that people are running up bids to make it appear the prints are more valuable than they are. Do people really believe its rational to pay more for a Nick Walker than a Banksy?! Use your heads, and keep your cash for when the prices sort out to their true values... anyone else that feels the need to go spend huge cash on a Walker print should remember the Tusser quote “A fool and his money are soon parted.”

The Nick Walker Vandal Exhibition Experience, by spirit on Apr 18, 2008 17:13:44 GMT 1, One other point I would make. Ever since I saw my first Banksy's (which was about 10 years ago) I immediately thought his work was brilliant. Banksy is, and always has been, consistently good. Nick walker has been working for a long time too but it is only now that he seems to have delivered the goods. I think most would agree that while he has produced some good work in the past he has also produced a lot of mediocre stuff. What he does next will be critical to his long term career.
