Saw this just got added to MBW's site. Edition of 15 for $900 USD. Not my cup of tea but it did make me chuckle. The only image of his I really like is Le Bistro (and possibly Star Wars Reunion - like the image but not a SW fan).

Oh yes, and I bought Le Bistro because I actually like it and not because I think its Banksy.

I don't know what's wrong with me at the moment but this guy is actually growing on me. I don't think I would go as far as buying anything but Le Bistro is Ok, as is Run DMC and I do like the Employee of the month. I will wake up tomorrow and come to my senses.

MBW has as much wit and soul as Banksy!, I have never bought such fun art, I have a 5' sq bright pink flowery Marilyn monroe canvas that is sooo tacky it hurts, I was brainwashed into buying some of the prints too, the Marilyn manson/warhol print is fucking quality!, I've heard the documentary is out next month, better late than never eh!

That's because most of the collectors on expressobeans are retarded. Their boards are filled with idiot concert poster collectors who are like "look at the pretty colours!" and buy some of the worst schlock that will never appreciate and has no lasting importance to the art world. Meanwhile, this board actually has coherent commentary and contributions from some of the top gallery owners, emerging artists, and fine art collectors in the world.

That's why on that board they are speculating that MBW being "an artist collective" in which "Banksy, Blek, and others" all have contributed works, (because "the pieces look similar," I can't make this s**t up) while on this board, you've got members reporting how Shepard Fairey said at Seth Carmichael's Bonhams event that he wasn't happy that so much of MBW's work was ripping off other artist because he hired low costs artists (which he hired off craigslist supposedly) to produce most of the work.

Furthmore, this board gave MBW's LA show fair, but tepid reviews at best, leveling lots of criticism for his wholesale jacking of other artists ideas, while on expressobeans you heard comments like "Rocks! That is all i have to say about that."

But I thank god that expressobeans sucker's exist. If it wasn't for them, there wouldn't be the market for the crap prints I flip to buy art I actually want! There is a sucker born every minute, they all contribute to expressobeans boards, and they somehow form MBWs core audience.

Whatever, this same thing happened with Nick Walker, when the rumor he was Banksy caught wildfire, and then he had crazy aberrant prices at auction, which further fueled a bunch of rampant speculation.

Now Nick Walker's prices are in the toilet compared to what they were, only difference is that in Nick's case 1) He's actually an extremely talented artist with original ideas who has been doing this as long as Banksy 2) The rumors about Nick being Banksy were at least a little bit more plausible - albeit untrue.

Thierry aka MBW isn't even from the right country! He looks nothing at all like any of the images of Banksy. He's been doing his own thing for years before anyone here took notice of him (I saw his street pieces 4 years ago) And Shepard Fairey has definitively told the story about how Thierry snaked his way into being a street artist and how he introduced him to Banksy.

Now the facts are that MBW is even more liberal than Hirst in utilizing assistants, as MBW also utilizes his assistants for CONCEPTUALIZATION. That is one area that has always been taboo in the art world and should always be taboo. Oh, and scrubbing Banskys to put up his schlock work should be considered taboo too, but MBW seems to love to do that too... which is the ultimate asshole move IMHO.

I rant and rave against MBW because he's not just wholly unoriginal, but he pays other people to be unoriginal for him. He comes from wealth and is trying to buy his way into being a legitimate street artist. That's why I actively root against him becoming wildly successful. But he's essentially Baxter Orr with even less originality but a 1,000 the financing! (I knock Baxter mostly because of that ill advised lawsuit he got into with Shep and I didn't like his 'Dope' take off on Obama released in the primaries)

Ebean shmucks will keep overpaying for MBW because he's a hype-ster.

Granted, some of his pieces are cute and fun... but grossly overpriced given his stature.

I do like his 'Marilyn Manson Marilyn' though. Not for $750, but do like it.

But $1200 for almost a direct screen print copy of the David Bowie lightning bolt image???!

Reprinting an image that sells out but changing the frame colour?

There are many reasons why MBW is only a passing fad. Yes, his price will go up based on the hype, but there just isn't enough there, there with MBW as an artist.
