New Dave Choe out today, by solar77 on Jan 11, 2008 4:26:00 GMT 1, Funny, in November 2006 you could easily grab an original between $270 to $700......(edition of 1)... Anyway, I like Choe's work....
And you could get a signed Banksy in that price range 6 months before that. I see what you're saying, but this seems to be the nature of the game at the moment.

New Dave Choe out today, by leumasdarnley on Jan 11, 2008 4:29:22 GMT 1, Greed.... Choe needs to grow up quick because the 15 year old gang bangers that think his attitude is cool only get $20.00 a week for allowance. I have been backing this guy for a while and I'm done sorry David your a great artist with great potential but I am bored with Gangster Choe's new album.... blah But yet you have a gallery where your first description about the artists you represent says: "This traveling group of misfits usually create more trouble than art." odd.........
Hey I have been a huge Choe supporter I want to believe in him but to be honest I am kind of fed up hence my strong words. I think that David can achieve what he is looking to do and carry himself with a little more class and humility. Street art at its roots is a form of vanadalism so I'm not saying breaking the law or being a regular f**kup is wrong . But I guess what has disapointed me as a fan is I was hoping to see a little more growth in his imagry and attitude. I guess I read one too many blogs where he swearing ever other word. Hey for some his rawness is what attracts them and thats cool but IMO he could let the art do the talking but hey he's made it this far right.... so what do I know? The rerelease in a new color by his print house another print tommarow 4 or 5 new prints at Laz in a few weeks the little bit "don't b**ch" to his fans on the blog "pay now get em in March" I snapped last bitch I'm done with my rant please prove me wrong Choe.

Exactly. I would also say its the nature of the game, period, not just at the moment. Art is a part of a market just like everything else, always has been. Supply and demand dictates the price. With art especially, demand can dramatically spike in an instant.
To me, it makes no sense to say "You could have gotten an original from this artist for this much less a day/week/month/year ago". The price changes according to market conditions. What may have been true one day can change after just one big show. I'm honestly surprised to hear it said as often as I have here on a Banksy forum no less. One of the fastest appreciating artists in history.

I think you have made some very valid points and are obviously passionate about your art and who you collect and why. It seems alot of people agree with you too or at least hear where you're coming from. I won't be buying this print and I predict the flippers will suffer on this one too and the choe fans will think twice also as it's too similar to the last.

New Dave Choe out today, by Gentle Mental on Jan 11, 2008 9:50:19 GMT 1, i still have faith in the guy. he has so much talent.
watch his "thumbs up" clips, and you can see amidst the swearing and posturing, i can tell he is genuinely looking for something. that elusive "human condition". And some of it, sometimes, does translate into his art, and when it does, (city girl, driving home etc) it's very very beautiful.
ok he sells out sometimes, who da heck doesn't? really? but unlike others, i had the suspicion that he is not just indulging in the excess, he is using it, stealing inspiration, working it into his next piece.
having him go all "fine art" would destroy him. he is trouble. he should be. that's his raw materials.
it's how i feel, but then again, i'm half man, half German shepherd. what do i know.

New Dave Choe out today, by mike hunt on Jan 11, 2008 13:06:49 GMT 1, I remember knowledgeable people getting excited about Choe, especially after City Girl, which is a v cool image, but I haven't seen anything by him that comes close to matching it since. I may be wrong, but I think people are looking to be amazed by the standard of his new stuff. If he doesnt achieve that, maybe people will no longer direct the same amount of attention at him? He's a big talent, no doubt.

New Dave Choe out today, by Rude Copper on Jan 11, 2008 14:16:32 GMT 1, it'll be interesting, city girl has come down in price from its high of Β£1200 to Β£800'ish, & driving home which sold out in the blink of an eye, is selling for Β£350'ish, Β£50 up on what it cost seriously, if you're buying to flip, will it be worth it?

its interesting to read things like 'knowledgeable people' i've watched both forums (info & ebay) since they started, & i would say that there are 2, maybe 3 people who i would actually regard as being 'authorities' or 'knowledgeable' on both, what actually qualifies somebody to proclaim david choe as being the next big thing?, & for people to believe it & franticly buy everything they can find by him

New Dave Choe out today, by carlito on Jan 11, 2008 14:27:34 GMT 1, I love this idea of 'knowledgeable' people full stop when it comes to the appreciation of an artists work...because it's totally subjective...if you've got half a brain you make up your mind when it comes to taste...yes you ask people about prices, or edition sizes etc, but a simple thing like do i like or not have the balls to make up your own mind

New Dave Choe out today, by laing on Jan 11, 2008 14:47:38 GMT 1, seriously, if you're buying to flip, will it be worth it? Unfortunately that won't stop them and for those that don't manage to get the print(s) if they like them will have to go back to evilbay - but hopefully as with many other artists releases the hype will die and so will any profit the flippers would make, leaving it accessible to those that genuinely want the prints to hang on their walls and enjoy.
There aren't many Choe prints that I really like, but think City Girl 150 is a good print but most of all like Driving Home which I managed to pick up on this forum today for a good price and friendly, quick transaction - can't wait to receive it and get it to the framers! ;D

lol. roughly what i meant, i just wondered if there were any night classes that offer diplomas on street art appreciation that allow you to guide others on who's who, certainly seems to be a wealth of people proclaiming to be well respected & knowledgeable, some on here, & a lot on wk, wonder if it'll ever revert back to a scene where people just enjoy it for what it is?

Got mine too, no idea whether or not to go for it or back out as I'm gonna try for tonight's release as well and don't really fancy spending Β£500 today.
What to do, what to do .

New Dave Choe out today, by mike hunt on Jan 11, 2008 15:19:23 GMT 1, Crikey - I just wanted to say that a few friends who have collections that I really like gave me a heads up on an artist who didn't really float my boat, so I didn't buy. Didn't realise it was such a contentious subject! I will never use the term again - I have opened a can of worms. I will fall on my own sword now (that is not code for masterbation)!

New Dave Choe out today, by giiiant on Jan 11, 2008 15:21:33 GMT 1, At first I thought the one coming out later today was hideous, but then I saw the closeups and it's now turned into a must have (well, a "f5 until it pops up and add to basket and see if it feels right" type of thing at least). So much detail is invisible on the small preview pic it's ridiculous. It probably sounds like I'm an undercover agent trying to hype him up so I'll shut up now. Just look at the pic below though to see what I mean.
