Good question, I think I understand, if not sorry and please tell me if I have the wrong end of the stick.
I like the fact in the abstracts, that at the beginning when you first start one, the paint makes the picture, then I can start to develope it and finish the peice. if you know what I mean
These are some of my thoughtsโฆ
I have done splatters in my work for years now. Behind my painting to create texture and make them a little more interesting. they first made a trip to the front of the painting in Anteros and wellybobby painting i did.
I like doing them for one, I like that you can't totally control the way the paint turns out on the peice. The more I do it I try my best to control it and I would like to develop it further.
When I do my other paintings it is always strategic and very intense, with every brush stroke. so another reason that I like doing these is that they are Free, and and a different way to express myself.
I have always wanted to have a go at abstract, a friend of mine, who is a painter and was probably a bit of an inspiration when i was younger, he does abstracts, and since I first saw his, I wanted to do them one day.
They started out as a way of breaking into doing colour images from just doing almost black and white. My new paintings are containing alot of splatter work.
I always try and develop my work, so the abstracts set me a big challenge. I look to try and create more depth and I have already started to do more and more work in them, finer splatters, mixing more colours, thinking about colour more, all things which help me progress as a painter.
I have loads of things planned for them, different ways in presenting them.
Hope this helps Cheers

Latest Pollocks, by Rourke on Aug 23, 2009 10:13:13 GMT 1, Thanks everybody for your brilliants comments appreciate it
Silky, The Harum-Scarum one. When I do a set of pollocks, most of the paint used is mixed indivually for each peice, eg. if three need a bit of light blue I will work on a few at a time. I always try and do one out of the set which contain a bit of all the colours I have been using in the others which make it have alot of depth with all the layers of colour. Harum-Scarum is the one I did this on this time.
Thanks for the post

I don't think anyones work is the sort on thing that develops into pieces like this I think a lot of people imagine they are easy to do, but I think it takes a load of skill to actually make them look right.

Come on Silky...I know you have no clue about art and never have any real critical analysis about anything that's posted on here, but even you cant think these are hard to produce ?
Im not digging at Rourke, just think what comes out of your keyboard is laughable at time

Latest Pollocks, by Rourke on Aug 24, 2009 10:57:16 GMT 1, Cashman appreciate your honesty after all thats what we are here for, to discuss art. โ I didnโt think you were being funny at all, I took your question as intended that you were genuinely interested in Why? As the โload of Pollockโsโ are so far removed from my normal pen and paint work.
From a personal point of view I think there is a stigma attached to Abstracts โ and rightly so due to unrealistic price tags. People think they are easy to do and โI can do that, my son/daughter can do that, they are a load of bollocksโฆ hence the title โload of Pollockโsโ
In these times when everyone is skint it was my intention was to create an original abstract with an affordable price tag.
I think that Silky is trying to say that they arenโt as easy to produce as people think.
Because I am an artist I donโt just chuck paint at a canvas to make a pretty pictures, there is still a thought process involved and feeling in them, Some days when I want to do a Pollock I canโt because I am not in the right frame of mind and they just go wrongโฆ. There is definitely a technique to doing them I move my hand in certain way to get one shape then my whole body to get anotherโฆ. I must be quite amusing to watch a bit like body popping with a paintbrush ;-) I still try to create, depth, texture, movement, lighting, contrast etc just like I would with any of my pictures, the only difference is there is no subject which I think makes the job a little bit harder.
Cheers

good luck rourke i cant go to that much im stuck under the 100 pound marker at the mo so out of my league but i love them. I realise there from the norm as to what you normally sell but come on people just stop and think abit. If you think this is easy (chucking paint around) what about 90% of banksy stencils one cut one colour, what abouthirst spin paintings and spots. Art with a lot less talent sells for more than this ( and the big boys dont even make there own stuff now they just design it ).

Latest Pollocks, by Heavyconsumer on Aug 24, 2009 13:21:23 GMT 1, FWIW Rourke, I think you're succeeding. I've revisited this page a number of times now to take another look. Admittedly, you couldn't have got much further from my usually preferred colour pallet, but somehow, even though I find these combinations a little unsightly/ugly/sickly even, I have to say, they really work very well, in all of the above pieces imho.
You've definitely managed to achieve depth, movement, texture and contrast in all of them. The only one that actually does not work quite so well (again, imho) is Harum Scarum. It's just a bit too much for me to find any focal points of the above mentioned qualities, except perhaps depth - I think it seems less organized/planned somehow. While I particularly "like" Patriot Banger and Space Dust.

FWIW I think Hirsts spin paintings a very poor and wouldn't buy one if I had that kind of money as small change, the spots I guess at least they have a concept and thats what I asked Rourke if he had and fair play to him he came back with an answer. Where Hirst comes into it though I dont know because he's not on here selling his work.
As for Banksy, well once again you have a concept behind the piece even if the finished product was simple or not, my last comment was to silky anyway as HE was the person stating how hard pieces like these are to produce.

However im probably included here but its the way people make there comments they seem to very often make the comments in a blunt sometimes aggressive manner (sort of matter of fact way). not including you cash no offence made just a sleepy rant if you ever make a nice fine art piece i will happly hang it up

Once again rourke I wasn't digging at you..I think your a very talented artist and wish you all the best. I just think people should give a better analysis about work, rather than the one sentence 'I like it' comments that keep popping up to every new piece of art someone like yourself produces
