Lazarides Rathbone Gallery Opening 15th May, by dotdot on May 21, 2009 17:57:34 GMT 1, Charlie Isoe's work on the shop front in Greek Street is quite something.
perhaps not 'veryone's cuppa - perhaps that's the point.
oh and they've got a new (to the shop) 1/1 banksy piece (1 off print) which I understand to be not for sale.
liita on st george background - small (size).
looked quite stunning.

Cheers Winter Now been told these pieces wont get through customs in Dubai!!?

Lazarides Rathbone Gallery Opening 15th May, by blackcowboy666 on May 30, 2009 10:15:11 GMT 1, is Isoe really Lister? Is Lister painting 'Isoe' to get around getting paying a higher tax bracket from all his sales in the UK? I dont begrudge anyone expressing themselves artistically, and we all know that everyone 'borrows' from everyone else in some capacity or another....BUT to me, personally, lately there has been less new artists coming out with a unique style and voice and a few artists, who to me, really really produce work that is almost identical to already eastablished artists...Isoe - Lister, Dain - Bast....and they are often poorer pieces. If these artists have been painting in that style for a long time - fine! if they have never been influenced by the people i think they imitate - fine! if they do admit to biting styles to earn money - hell im even fine with that...each to their own...its just worrying and counter productive to any 'scene' where there is no major new talent being discovered and everyone is starting to promote (to me) copycat artists...its like the scene is eating itself or even inbreeding...and we have all seen 'Deliverence'...its not good or productive - its indictive its run out of ideas, scraping the barrel to carry on making money. I went to Lazs new space and saw the giant Isoes in the first room and thought that Laz's advertised 'special guests' could include Lister...but they were Isoes, and regardless of Isoes talents, how long he has been painting, how nice he is personally...my first reaction (and many i have spoken to since) is...why is laz showing a lister rip off? Its not a good first impression of his new venture in the first room! There was a day when Laz was so mighty that it seemed he could get any artist he wanted....but now it seems, to me personally, hes a big fan of Lister...cant get him and now is moulding and selling this isoe as the next Lister.... all good artists are influential and their styles, iconography and techniques get absorbed by following generations...i know that street art will produce great artists down the line...and i HATE it when everyone sees a stencil and says they are biting Banksy - they are not, those commentators are lazy and uneducated...however there is a fine line - and Isoes work containts too many elements that are pure Lister... im just worried and puzzled why Laz is pushing a really bad Lister copy (he is) when the real Lister is still alive and producing work!!! its weird... Does anyone agree/ disagree? am i the only one? This might get me hate points but this is a forum and i really had to get that off my chest!

Loads of Lister news over on the Lister forum if you're interested..... anthonylister.proboards.com

Lazarides Rathbone Gallery Opening 15th May, by manty on May 31, 2009 10:58:57 GMT 1, Why cant people go upstairs to see the good stuff?
Do you have to pre-qualify, or show a black coloured credit card?
Seems a shame, and a waste

The 2nd floor is used for offices so not open to the public; I think they opened it up on the opening night as a one-off. It's a bit of a tease as from the first floor you can catch a glimpse of a few Banksy canvasses etc.

Lazarides Rathbone Gallery Opening 15th May, by blackcowboy666 on May 31, 2009 12:23:30 GMT 1, i was a bit disapointed when i went to the new Laz too...when i first heard about five stories i was amazed at how much he was upping his game, but only two floors of exhibitions available out of three? weak sauce...i thought there was more on offer when he was in greek st and the print room...give me more works to see rather than fancy ceilings and stairs... in the show i liked the space invader Iron Maiden cover and the Choe in the window but to be honest nothing else in there did anything for me - nothing new or exciting...even Boogie, who is AMAZING, had two weak pictures, which is a shame because i love him. I was impressed by the new cinema and mini catacombs in the greek street shop...nice touch, although i am still baffled by the pencil on the wall pricing, as i thought one piece cost two and half inches (the measurements left on the wall)!...and also love the vintage stuff in the cases - paris riots boardgame etc .... oh yeah Sister Corita is amazing as is the paris riot stuff - why hasnt he shown more of these?
