Banksy Crude Oils - Video, by LoveRat on Nov 18, 2006 0:40:38 GMT 1, As far as i know they were all genuine paintings that he "vandalised" Banksy vandalised Nighthawks? ?? Or is the point that he "interpreted" the original and then vandalised that? I dunno, I'm asking.
No , he didn't vandalise Nighthawks. Some of the Crude Oils were reinterperations of well known paintings, others were "vandalised" paintings. They were just flea market paintings to which he added his own touches. For example:www.banksy.co.uk/indoors/guantanemo.html

I agree - my favorite 'remix' is that one of Monet's "Water Lily Pond". Vettriano's "Singing Butler" comes a close second

Banksy Crude Oils - Video, by RetroCanvas on Jun 5, 2006 22:52:14 GMT 1, Hi All, particularly moderators,
Wast just going through all the original canvases and noticed that you have got all the Crude Oils paintings apart from the really small one of the bloke with an egg on his face. How could you miss it :-)
Also, I know this is petty, but you have named the 'Tomato Soup' canvas 'Tomato Sauce' in the Originals section ;-)
Youo could have a, 'Whats Wrong With Us' thread like they do in magazines. People can point out where you've gone wrong, tut.

Banksy Crude Oils - Video, by RetroCanvas on Jun 6, 2006 12:37:54 GMT 1, He pulled a 'Banksy' at a Banksy exhibition :-)
I didn't know it was Mr Eggs, quality.
In that case, there's no need to put it up on the site. If someone does want to see a pic of it, I do have one on pc. Let me know and i'll post it on here.

What a great story,

Banksy Crude Oils - Video, by tool on Jan 11, 2007 12:22:46 GMT 1, Would anyone be able to clarify for me how Banksy actually did some of the paintings in Crude Oils? I'm assuming the Waterlillies is a print of Monet's original that's been painted over. Or did Banksy actually copy it himself? Similarly, are the works like Crimewatch, hung in the Tate copies or originals? This could sound like a bit of an obvious question but I need it clarrified for my dissertation!
Thanks guys, any help much appriciated.

Banksy Crude Oils - Video, by Ågent ßacardi on Jan 12, 2007 0:11:30 GMT 1, For a lot of the vandalized paintings, the originals were simply essentially-unknown works purchased from flea markets and then 'updated', such as "CCTV" or the one with the Guantanamo Bay Prisoner. For the 'remixed classics' however, I think he did the repros himself (as opposed to getting a repro that was exactly like the original work and then bastardizing it). If you look at "Crude Oils", the general color tones are very different from the Vettriano original. Couldn't have been a repro to begin with, 'cos if it was, then the repro would have remained as true to the original image in these aspects to begin with (otherwise it wouldn't be called a 'repro'), and the result would have appeared a lot gloomier. Thus, the whole thing was probably been painted from scratch, presumably by Banksy. Same goes for "Show me the Monet", the color tones are quite different from Monet's original, so it was probably not 'vandalized' but instead composed from scratch. Ditto for "Sunflowers from the Gas Station".
So I think the best answer to your question is "some he did from scratch, some he 'vandalized'". At least, judging from the products, this conclusion would seem most intuitive. An educated guess, anyway The only sure way to find out would be to examine the actual paintings, but they're obviously very much inaccessible.

Banksy Crude Oils - Video, by lesroy on Jul 22, 2006 11:35:27 GMT 1, Hey guys,
Just seen this on eBay.
cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=013&item=230007643290&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3APIC&rd=1
I know its not genuine, and it doesn't claim to be. However, the Banksy Crude Oil is one of favourite pieces and I can only assume that I'll never be able to have a copy as he only did one ?
Anyway, I really fancy this as I love the image but I dont really wanna buy a rip off of Banksy... is it likely that he will ever release this picture for sale?
