Yet again, you have managed to p1ss me off with another stupid posting. Do you not think before you write or are you too stupid to even do that? How can YOU, be so rude about such a great artist? If you dont like the piece, that's fine. Its a boring world where everyone likes exactly the same pieces. This is a forum to discuss art and its merits. And everyone should feel free to be able to post their thoughts and feelings WITHOUT being personal. But for you to post the above is insulting to the artist, to Andrew at Outer Edge (who works so hard to get the colours and quality of the prints spot on) and to all of the Artists fan's of which I am one. Please think before you post drivel like this in the future.

I agree there will always be haters. But disliking the art is fine. you might not like the image, the way the colours ar produced or how it is signed! But to be personal about such a great artist and a printer who really works hard to get it right for us all to enjoy is un-necessary and to me totally un-acceptable.

David Choe - "Dark Circles", by origo on Nov 28, 2008 18:26:28 GMT 1, I usually dig Choe´s work, but this one does nothing for me.
Peoples different tastes should be respected though, okay to call it a pass but art is something very sensitive and people might get offended by comments like that.

David Choe - "Dark Circles", by jusdeep on Nov 28, 2008 18:32:00 GMT 1, I'm not the biggest fan of Choe's and have really been trying hard to appreciate his work of late. I was left rather perplexed with the direction of some of the pieces in his Lazardies show earlier in the year, but I do see a glimmer of attraction in his water colours and with this new print.

And, for those who think Giclee is ctrl-p, you need to educate yourself. I used to love Ryden's prints when they were giclee. Now that they are litho I could care less.

looks good to me. I like how it has a 3D feel with some of the hair blurred out contrasting with the other hair in the forefront creating some depth.

David Choe - "Dark Circles", by veralynn on Nov 28, 2008 19:13:07 GMT 1, In a way but not so brutally I agree with Stuey (contravertial tho that might be) this isn't a touch on City Girl 150.
It just looks kinda weird, like something off ER undergoing burns treatment....one of those ones which doesn't lend inself to 'most' walls - I'm not doubting Mr Choe's talent as an artist but this direction is odd, for those of us who live in the UK doesn't it remind you of the girl in the booze ad where it bangs on about 'not starting a night like this, so why end it that way?'

Stuey refered to Choe as being shit, while you say you're not doubting his ability as an artist. One of these comments is a respectful way of saying you don't like the work, while the other is a personal insult of the artist with no regard for common decency or other peoples' views . I don't think you were really agreeing with Stuey's insightless rubbish at all, were you?

David Choe - "Dark Circles", by lee3 on Nov 28, 2008 20:10:02 GMT 1, Put my obvious bias for Choe aside and take what i have to say in more general terms. Personally, I think it is a GREAT thing when artists inspire contempt and disdain from some onlookers while others are amazed with the same talent and share a love of the work. Choe strikes a chord with people in the love/hate category and i think that is a beautiful thing. There are plenty of struggling artists that fail to inspire any reaction whatsoever and very few find unanimous love. The GREAT ones inspire reactions of all kinds from both sides. Who knows where Choe's name ends up all said and done but he's on a pretty good path thus far and most importantly for him, he loves what he's doing. I know for a fact that Choe takes pleasure in the hate and shrugs it off so anyone voicing disgust at his direction or a certain composition isn't going to bother him. Obviously this is not true of most artists as many are more introverted than he is which is something to keep in mind as we chat about the merits or lack thereof of work from others.
As for the method used, again I know Andrew so I'm biased. I'm sure when artists started making reproductions of their work over a hundred years ago that people dismissed it then too and now look how many people lovingly hang prints in their homes. Look at the reaction Warhol received using the technique on canvas to create "original" works that people pointed at saying they weren't true works of art. Now they trade in the 10s of millions of dollars and are some of the most coveted works in the world. Giclee is simply the newest reproduction method on the block and people are notoriously slow to accept change. There is nothing we are going to accomplish on this forum to change thousands of years of human nature. Tradition is hard to break and there are purists that will never accept another reproduction method as funny as that statement sounds. Hell, digital music sounds damn good now with fantastic digital to analog converters and even I still have an old turntable to play some analog records. There are plenty of ways for us all to enjoy our favorite art.
In the meantime, I kind of loathe the politically correct way we've swung as a world though there is something to be said for politeness. I would hope we can all continue to call it as we see it. There will be some who choose not to comment on work they don't like and I can appreciate that stance. At the same time, I for one enjoy reading the comments of those on both sides of the aisle.

I do like the triptych tho and also City Girl 150 - but careless talk on forums like this (which do affect the 'market') isn't helpful, some would say if you don't have something constructive to say then don't say anything? I'm beg to sound like my Dad.....

David Choe - "Dark Circles", by deepdownboy on Nov 29, 2008 21:55:23 GMT 1, I like David Choe and own a "Falling for Grace" but I have to admit I don't like the London Girl and these editions with the city type hair, just my personnel taste. One that I have been eying for a while is "Seedy" something about this just clicks with me. Maybe I see my Christmas present to myself here

David Choe - "Dark Circles", by Bram on Nov 30, 2008 20:17:36 GMT 1, has anyone seen the planned 13 colour screen print (you heard right, 13 thats 13 coloured screen print) It looks erm.......very interesting. Lests just say it will take you a few weeks to study it. Here's Mr Choes view.
"After working with the world famous burlesque team on my obama print, we are teaming up again once more like wondertwins, to produce my most ambitious print to date , EXODUS FROM THE LAND OF PLAY
in the land of play ,the sky’s rain fried cheese bread, there is non-stop fun and unlimited freedom, children are encouraged to commit acts of vandalism, fight, drink beer out of unicorn horns, smoke cigars that turn into bubblicious, and gamble and never lose, nuns show you their shaved va***as and preach, up all night , sleep all day, where everyone plays and never works, where a kid can be a kid, and also where a man can also behave like a kid, do what you want, whenever you want there’s no responsibilities, no cops, no rules, no repercussions, and no consequences to any of your actions, but all good things must come to an end, I won’t tell you what happened, but everyone has to leave immediately, get the f**k out now! So Our heroine and androgynous vamp, donning royal robes and axl rose gear , leads a parade of donkey eared miscreants and ne’er –do wells armed with customized super soakers filled with gummy worm juice and milk from coco crispies(I won’t name them all , but Darth Nihilus, razorback, and Beta ray Bill are up in the mix), out of Cockaigne, maybe to wander the earth forever?
This print will be a whopping 13 color screen print, on Rising Stonehenge 250gsm, it's 100% cotton, the Image size will be : 28x23.75. and the Finished print size: 33x30 (the original is 5 feet by 6 feet and every tiny detail has been captured), THERE WILL ONLY BE 76 copies of this print made, many have already been reserved for friends and family, so be warned , if you sleep on this one, don’t b**ch to me later, I’m flying to Minnesota in December to inspect, sign and maybe draw or paint on some or all of these prints. We will release this before Christmas, the price is $909"

This latest print by David Choe is rubbish. That is my opinion. He started out being interesting and talented, but he has totally sold out. His latest work is bland and far, far worse than the majority of stuff posted on this forum. I assume (Zippy) that you own some Choe work and are dissapointed that your investment has died.
My post was a conscious move to question Choe's recent output. It's cheap, nasty and well below his potential output.
Thanks and sorry for going against the 'gang'.

Stuey, your post was not 'a conscious move to question he's recent output' as I would not have questioned it. You were personally rude about an artist.
Yes, I do own a few Choe prints but my City Gilr is framed and takes pride of place on one of my walls at home.

The physical printing is a work of art in itself. I love a lot of his stuff but not a huge fan, I think he is trying too hard to be cool and different and needs to get back to basics (imo). He gains or suffers from being in a genre of his own.
