David Choe-Obama Print Out Now!(AND ANOTHER), by BONGO on Sept 22, 2008 15:03:12 GMT 1, I took a quick browse of Obama's Dreams of My Father (A book he wrote long before...) I wasn't able to put it down. No politician can write that well. They can act in hollywood movies, they can play the sax, or have affairs with interns and Marilyn Monroe, or invade nations for oil in the name of freedom, but they cannot write this well. It's not in their DNAs - The same reason why pigs can't fly. As a politician, Obama is different in many ways, and the colour of his skin is the LEAST of his differences. He's a new variant of politicians that evolved the incompetencies of the current administration. He has wings. He flies. He's not a pig. (I genuinely hope so.)
INCORRECT

David Choe-Obama Print Out Now!(AND ANOTHER), by Gentle Mental on Sept 22, 2008 16:21:35 GMT 1, And there's che, jesus, buddha, and ganhdi, churchill, mao - their portraits are all statements of the artist's perspective. positive or negative...
having a politician/leader up on your wall doesn't mean you're bad or the artist's up to no good or ignorant.
Artists and collectors needn't always desire the prettiest wall decorations, they can and have political ones too.
we got to believe in something.

David Choe-Obama Print Out Now!(AND ANOTHER), by Gentle Mental on Sept 22, 2008 17:53:15 GMT 1, I think... IMHO,
Choe and Fairey being what they are, Americans, and, I'm stereotyping here, but hey it's only a very general opinion, American Street Artists have this brass, almost simplistic way in approaching making a message beautiful - not the usual understated "Brit" take on things. They want to promote this politician, they make an "ad" poster of this politician. They like breasts with diamonds, hey breasts with diamonds etc etc.
Even the hidden meanings are blatant.
It's all quite "in yo face". Which the Brits find it quite hard to like.
Which is a pity, because it's really unsophisticated, raunchy and fun.

IMO, he's just miles above most and is blessed with talent, intelligence, and humor though I can appreciate it can rub some folks the wrong way. There are precious few artists in the street genre who would even know who Lautrec is let alone have the necessary skills to take inspiration from the work below and do something like this from his own modern viewpoint
And this is the same artist that can draw like this
He's got a command of watercolor to do something lie this:
And is now doing enormous compositions outside like this
I understand the one man's trash is one man's treasure as there are 3 or 4 HIGHLY coveted artists in this genre that I can't appreciate either. But, the list is so small of people in the world who can make incredibly varried compositions (as opposed to a repeated theme) like that in whatever medium of their choice, are only in their mid 30s, and with each passing show it seems like thier work is taken to a whole different level. No, he doesn't draw or do watercolor's anywhere near as precise as a photorealist. But, he's so much more prolific than they were/are. I'm obviously biased but I think he's one of the short list artists that come around every 50 years and can do anything at anytime with no preparation. His preparation was all of the self taught and formal training he had in his youth and now he's free to do whatever he wants. I'm definitely enjoying the ride

David Choe-Obama Print Out Now!(AND ANOTHER), by Richard on Sept 22, 2008 19:52:47 GMT 1, I agree Lee that he has immense talent. But I would disagree that he will be remembered in 50 years.
In fact - the only artist from this genre who I think will be remembered (and importantly, still in demand) is Banksy - pure and simple.

I'm not sure I claimed that he would be but may well have in the past anyway. Regardless, I'm not admiring or buying art based on my gut feeling as to whether someone will be important in 50 years time. I'm buying it because I want to enjoy it right now while i can. 50 years from now, I'll be LUCKY to still have a passion for art like I do today as opposed to a passion for 18 hours of sleep and a night nurse making my dinner at 3pm.
