DFACE, by barry cilit on Aug 6, 2007 22:47:10 GMT 1, well.... one rule of thumb I tend to use, is that when an artist has to mimick another artist's style..i.e Andy warhol inorder to get their own "idea" across they are allready struggling to make a credible statement. Banksy's Kate Moss at least had a cultural ironic reference. But a half skull, half Monroe face with wings is just meaningless nonsense. It's also like he is in the mind set of ..errr.. well if I include a skull , a set of wings and a Warhol reference, then hopefully it will look cool? IMO It is acceptalbe for a 36 year old man to own an Ian Francis, Barry Mcgee, Phil Frost, or dread to say it ..maybe D*'s main inspiration...Kaws???
IMO, but everyone's taste is different so if you own a D*Face then no offence intended..I just feel a bit too old to have his work on my walls.

Does anyone want to trade my D*Face for a Hutch print?

D*FACE is all about having a sense of fun and enjoyment.
I think you are generalising. Dface death and glory is not childish, either is the what wars are for, either is the pop-tart or the cli-che. I could go on.
They are all contemporary. I am not going to mention any artists but i would rather have some d*face stuff up to make the place feel a friendly place rather than some boring shit which looks like it has been painted by a 5 year old.

look up dface on ebay in the completed items - think that recent pop tart prints and what wars are for are currently going for the same amount as a banksy flag.
I don't understand why you are so amazed for, its been going on for years.
Infact the green pop tart was unsold at ยฃ800 as the reserve was not met. Could have been dodgy, but i dont know. All i know is my house is full of d*face and every bit looks amazing and everyone talks about it when they come around. Even a colleague who is 30 years senior is into it. Its for all ages and is fairly accessible to everyone - even if you do have to stand in line for 5 hours.

Ok Sorry! no offence intended, I guess I was trying to be polite with describing it. In black and white terms I am basically saying his work is low brow. A one pun image? I guess we all have differing tastes, and at the end of the day it's whatever melts your butter. sorry

DFACE, by A.R.T. on Aug 6, 2007 23:10:35 GMT 1, This piece would be considered an original right?
Its a 10x12 sticker of the River Watcher character that he made famous b/c of his street art. It's an original drawn sticker, you can see the marker strokes, that has a DFace signature on it as well. It was a piece that the original owner found on a street sign in the streets of New York, and was able to carefully remove it and placed it on cardboard to mount it. Like i said about this piece in another thread, I consider this to be some of the best street art to own. Imagine owning a wall that Banksy put up some work on? I plan on getting it professionaly framed so that the cardboard is hidden and you will only be able to see the art.

Not really - i saw this on the US ebay and did not bid as it all looked a bit strange.
An original would need provenance otherwise its pretty much worthless - i know how much you bought this for and it may be worth twice or three times that in years to come, but its not an original.
Sorry - im sure im not the only person to think this.

Nope I don't think so. Although as this generation of new art lovers matures, i would expect people to want to enjoy more subtlety and depth to their art. Also this audience will become more rigorous in its appreciation of technique particularly regarding aesthetics of the piece.

So even though it is hand drawn, that does not make it original? What would I need to do to get provenance? Could this be authenticated and by whom? What made it look so strange to you? Sorry for all the questions......... I bought it from a reputable seller on Ebay, so I don't question its authenticity. I just want to get it authenticated so there is no doubt in the future.

Sorry if you misunderstood - im not saying its not original, im sure that is it. Its just if you ever want it to be more than than just a sticker found and put onto cardboard you would need a letter or email of provenance from a dealer or the artist himself. As far as i remember the guy who sold this stuck it to cardboard himself - it was not found like that.
Its a nice thing to have and im sure it will look very cool though. Not all art is for money remember that - i would be proud to have that as well to stick up on the wall as something neat

i get the feeling he maybe does not understand the concept that this is expensive stuff - its not just getting a quick thing drawn up - they are hard to find and most things will be sold before any joe public get to them.
good luck to him anyway!

Question does art always have to have a deep routed meaning or can it just be stimulating through imagery alone?
Not you taste fine but this 40 year old likes it (maybe I am trying to recapture my youth). ;D ;D ;D
