No doubt I'm pissing in the wind, but hey-ho... In essence: an adherence to and self-congratulatory agreement with, though misguided it may be, the principle of meritocracy. That is a belief, in you, shown time and time again that feels you can denigrate others because they do not appear to have the external material success that you feel you have. When in fact, as mentioned, the real reason behind any success you may have had is blind, dumb luck and we all know luck goes around and comes around in many many differing forms... you will learn this, though sadly (I expect) through quite tough experiences later in life rather than through a solid and sound, balanced upbringing.

I've said before now on this forum that I am currently a software developer (about a dozen years in it now, previously various other trades, mostly manual labour of one form or another - you know, actual "work done" from a physical perspective) and I work for a multitude of clients in all manner of trades: banking, industry, healthcare - all of which are varying but well paid and it affords me quite a nice lifestyle... however I am under no illusion whatsoever that I happen to be extremely lucky to be able to do a job in a sector that requires little effort and strain on my talents, is fairly robust currently against the varying market forces and pays well. I know full well that I do not get paid a day's pay for a day's work (there's a clue to my underlying beliefs, if you needed one, that will probably pass you by) but given the system we all live in it is the easiest and best paid job availble to someone with my talents. To think that I, intrinsically, deserve the remuniation I get any more than, say, a teacher, doctor, farmer, policeman, soldier and on and on merely because someone else is willing to pay that much is folly - don't entertain it for a single moment, it is merely luck, for me, and bad luck for those teachers, doctors and farmers etc. - ask Hirst after his recent auction if he deserved the cash he made due to his hard work, ask Beckham after 90 minutes on the pitch, ask Soros after last week's crash and boom... everyone knows they don't deserve it, do I begrudge them getting it... on balance yes a little, but personally under the system we live in, no... I can't really - like I say, it is inevitable to a certain degree.

I could bring the nature of geography and history into it, at least 99% of your luck is due to your "birthrite" which is probably why you ignore it so easily and willingly (another irony - actually not an irony at all but anyway: "Standing on the Shoulders of Giants" is Newton's quote on the edge of the £2 coin... the phrase is meant for scientific pursuit and development, however really, when you think about it... go on, think about it... hint: it is on the side of a £2 coin, which is our most recent monetary issue). Tell me, how many people live on a dollar a day in this world? (Or do we use a euro a day as the guide these days? hmmm??) Do any of them work any less hard than you? Is their effort commensurate with their pay when compared to yours? Answer that with extreme care.

Feel lucky for what you have, but don't ever feel deserving of it. There are very few truly deserving people in the west and property developer is way down towards the bottom of the other list. You are praying to the wrong god if you do believe you are deserving.

So next time you feel you want to say "Ive worked hard for what ive got"... remember, you havent, not really. You might have put yourself out there, taken a punt or two or had to think hard every now and then, you might even have had to stay up late a couple of nights in a row thinking about various things... but worked hard? No, you haven't... rarely does that phrase get used by any one who has had to work hard, you'd know what it really means if you had done.

I don't despise you, per se, to a certain degree property developers are a necessity with an expanding and ever-changing population.

I despise the self-congratulatory attitude you portray, which I would expect to be toned down a great deal when confronted in a face-to-face with harsh reality and home truths. The internet is a great thing to hide behind, likewise I have the experience to know that I would tone it down to you, too, however the fundamentals behind my discourse would be the same. I've mentioned the sectors I work in and have come across some real types... we are talking flaming ferraris et al, and at their core they are not bad people - if I believed you were, I wouldnt be responding at all, believe me. They tend to just go about their business and get caught up in a continually reinforcing maelstrom of self-belief that makes them appear to be bad people.

If anything, I despise the system that allows them to continue unchecked. Money, you will learn, is very much an ethereal concept... it comes and goes into your life, if you put too much faith into it, as I say, you are praying to the wrong god... now I don't want to sound all evangelical as, personally, religion is right up there for me with money... but this lesson is a harsh one to learn especially when you've already put all those eggs in that basket. That rug (metaphor-mixing-is-us!) can and will be pulled out from underneath you without so much as a bye or leave and then where are you? I have lived, within my 40-ish years, in quite a few differing scenarios - we've had house staff with drivers, maids and butlers (seriously) and we've lived on council estates and barrack housing - my father used to trade commodities between europe and the middle east, and it is all basically easy come and easy go... the only reals involved are the people and relationships in that situation - everything else is mere frippery.

Think on this... that sentence I said a couple of posts up that I thought was the nastiest individual post on this thread... print it out and show it to your mum or dad... and ask them their opinion on it... don't tell them you wrote it... just ask for their opinion on the person who did... go on, I dare you - are you party animal enough for the consequences?
