Keith Haring Subway Drawings at Sothebys., by Boy Wonder on Nov 8, 2024 7:13:01 GMT 1, Coming From renowned Haring collector and publisher, Larry Warsh, the Subway Drawings showcase the artist at the height of his career as a defining voice in the Street Art movement.
Itยดs interesting that Sotheby's is now selling 31 works by Haring, all of which were taken from public space in their time. The Haring Foundation never verified these drawings and never issued certificates. Although the drawings are reproduced in a book in collaboration with the Haring Foundation. And that naturally raises the question of whether the seller is a hero or a villain? The drawings have been preserved for posterity. Judge for yourself.

I went to the preview show today and these subway drawings are beautiful I do wonder about the pristine condition of these taken down from subway walls?

Keith Haring Subway Drawings at Sothebys., by bob73 on Nov 9, 2024 20:32:21 GMT 1, I havenโt seen a printed version but the online catalogue doesnโt seem to address how they got off the wall and to the collector, in many cases a decade or more later. Also some are noted as having belonged Hambleton. It seems just as criminal to have removed them than to have drawn them in the first place. Anyway they are guaranteed so will definitely sell

I actually made it to Sotheby's today to check them out in person. I've attached a couple of photos. If you're in NYC I highly recommend going to see the display in person.
They did a very elaborate environmental installation, transforming a gallery into an MTA train station with turnstiles and video projected trains passing by behind the works. It was very cool to see, and likely a once in a lifetime opportunity to see all of the works together.
For those who aren't aware, Larry Warsh is an avid collector of Haring and Basquiat and was also the person responsible for the exhibition of Basquiat's sketchbooks at the Brooklyn Museum a couple years ago (2015, damn time flies). So in response to the provenance of the works being questionable because of them being ripped from the subways, I'd say coming from the prestigious collection, and sold through the top tier auction house is validation enough.
Also, while you're there, you can see the iconic Maurizio Cattelan banana and duct tape piece The Comedian from Art Basel Miami 2019, and also a couple of spectacular Ed Ruscha paintings coming up for sale.
