Presumably, artizana, you have some vested interest here.
If so, did you ever consider just being honest and upfront about it?
That would seem far preferable as an approach — instead of trying to deceive members of this forum, by pretending you have no connection with the publication or its authors.

Catalogue Raisonné of Banksy's Street Art, by loui on Sept 2, 2024 20:32:09 GMT 1, This book IS NOT a Catalogue Raisonné of the street art of the artist known as Banksy. However, it will be used to legitimise questionable pieces for the purposes of inflating their resale price. Very interesting. I think Hessink had some trouble in the past and went bankrupt. After that he started selling Banksys.
“Richard Hessink's auction house Hessink's is not entirely uncontroversial in the art world. In 2010, bankruptcy comes after an auction of items belonging to murdered politician Pim Fortuyn. The auction brings in nearly 4 tons, but the owners of his estate receive less than 10 percent of that amount due to financial problems at Hessink's. Hessink's was forced by the courts to come up with more money, after which bankruptcy followed. The auction house restarted years later and now regularly sells works of art, such as Banksy's, which other auction houses do not want to burn their fingers on.”

Catalogue Raisonné of Banksy's Street Art, by faute on Sept 2, 2024 22:13:33 GMT 1, Hi, Anyone gonna buy this?
I’m broke. But, I still sent an email to buy this book of stolen pictures by an author (Richard A.M. Hessink) who has interests in selling Banksy street pieces and could therefore have conflicting interests. And I look forward. The title is certainly wrong. I mean, the author certainly hopes that after a couple of versions where people would criticize it, he will correct it and it would thus become the catalogue raisonné. Could that happen? I don’t know. I’m far from pure. I bought this pictures book.

Catalogue Raisonné of Banksy's Street Art, by Boy Wonder on Sept 3, 2024 6:01:03 GMT 1,
I only read the usual automatic reactions. How can people review a catalog raisonne before its even on the street? It's so stupid. Perhaps one should just appreciate that someone takes on the huge task when the artist himself refuses. The market is a mess. And lots of legit street and street pieces exist in a ocean of fakes from Dismaland and shit. At least some order is on its way.

I agree. I saw photos, it looks beautiful ! why to be always pessimistic or so critic because it’s a book about Banksy ? maybe because it’s expensive ( and it merits this price I think ) , and people won’t buy it, so they criticize this sale. before you and me the Boti book and the Dismaland book ( even the one about WOH dioramas were not so great, poor photos. ). This one seems luxurious and has a lot of unknown photos, when Banksy was a ( tall ) teen painting first in Bristol .
rdit : the really worst was the one about Ukrainian stamps ( it was look like a travel catalog and had always the photos). Rubbish. And what to say about the Laz ones in multiple editions with big red spots on the face ?

I believe the main reason Hessink is doing this is to create some credibility to their sorry bunch of street Banksys and fakes.
Wikipedia: “A catalogue raisonné (or critical catalogue) is a comprehensive, annotated listing of all the known artworks by an artist either in a particular medium or all media. The works are described in such a way that they may be reliably identified by third parties, and such listings play an important role in authentication.”

It’s BS. There are so many unauthorized books by Banksy ! In all langage ! All over the world ! Why gif this one ? Maybe unauthorized photos ? signed by Hesink of course It doesn't matter. A catalogue raisonné is not any old book, traditionally in the Art world it is the comprehensive catalogue of an artist's body of work.
It can be written and published by anyone, they don't have to be the artist, an estate, recognised authority or have anything to do with the artist.
What does matter is the major auction houses refer to the catalogue raisonné to authenticate works. Now, Banksy is a little different in that he's alive and does have his own organisation that authenticates works.
However, that won't stop second tier auction houses, or less than scrupulous dealers from using it as a reference and adding value to their dodgy inventory. It will muddy the waters.
It appears to have disappeared from iplayer, but if you can find it I would recommend watching the Fake or Fortune? episode I worked on a few years ago on William Nicholson. It's a good example of how a new catalogue raisonné changes everything.

It's a good example of how a new catalogue raisonné changes everything. I love Fake or Fortune, and I remember that episode. Fascinating investigation. There have been a few paintings in recent years that have been subject to "forensic attribution", but still failed for whatever reason to get the nod of approval from the relevant people.
It's amazing how a (respected/accepted) catalogue raisonné can make or break a painting.

I remember Hessink saying in an interview he got a mail from B, telling him to fuck of. This was at the time he was auctioning some works. He was looking (and getting) publicity. I always wondered why no decent journalist investigated this. Hessink also knew some private details of B, or at least he said he knew who B’s wife was et cetera (naming names). I wondered at that time where he got all this information from. The man is presenting himself as someone who is in the know. Why is B or PC not speaking up against people like this?

Acknowledging them probably just feeds their PR machine so better say nothing Do you really think it feeds their PR if Banksy or PC speaks out against this auction house or that book? I would think that if B acknowledged the fact this auction house “regularly sells works of art, such as Banksy's, which other auction houses do not want to burn their fingers on”, that isn’t good PR at all.
The interesting thing is that Hessink called Banksy “a smart businessman”:
“White House Rat is estimated at half a million. But if the work had had a certificate that Banksy gives to his print art, it would be worth between 5 and 10 million. "He doesn't want his street art to be auctioned off," Hessink explains. "Because he is a smart businessman who wants to make money from his prints that he markets himself." Banksy has informed Hessink by email that he may "crawl back under the tile he came from," and that is loosely translated, Hessink said.

The interesting thing is that Hessink called Banksy “a smart businessman”: “White House Rat is estimated at half a million.
