Banksy by Fragile book, by Manty on Sept 16, 2024 21:33:06 GMT 1, in my case yes ๐๐ป had to share photos of damage and signature / number Was yours similar or worse than mine (see picture above)? Am I being petty if I were to request a replacement? Did you contact through Shopify?
Petty? I don't know, maybe. Mine has a couple of dinked corners, but it's a ยฃ30 book. I'm not fussed, You and others might be. No right or wrong I would say. Must be a bit gutting for them to see the books arrived with people damaged, but preventable.

We all like/respect Fragile because it's Fragile ( Bansky etc... and signed ), but imagine, all ,that you had received this book from Amazon, Phaidon or Fnac : you will be the first to don't accept the damaged ones ,no ?
Yesterday I sent it back to DFace, cause I asked for a signed one and I have ahd a Frecnh one, it's really worrying.. They should take care.
Same for the Yorgos L. ' s book I sent it back 2 times to Amazon because of corners, I ordered to the editor and I received a lovely one!

Banksy by Fragile book, by Tobi187 on Sept 17, 2024 9:03:35 GMT 1, I guess it's a super small team handling the shipping, and it seems like domestic shipments are first in line, which is totally understandable because international shipping from the UK to the rest of the world requires additional paperwork. Now they've been hit with plenty of emails due to damaged books and need to handle replacements. It's only logical that it takes a bit longer for all of us to get our books. Relax!

No offence taken at all - was just going with some of the comments saying it could be petty but I'm in the view that when you buy something - it should be perfect. You wouldn't want the book in the same condition from WHSmith or Amazon.
@lroy - I emailed and they got back to me literally within 5/10 mins - I'm assuming quite a few people will be emailing now and maybe I jumped the queue so maybe it'll take a little longer for a reply. I was impressed with their response.
As soon as I saw the envelope online, I feared the worst as it's so flimsy and when I had mine in hand it was like a truck has ran over it haha.

Banksy by Fragile book, by met on Sept 17, 2024 9:28:01 GMT 1, Mine just arrived. Very surprised it came as it was with evri. Very happy with it!
Mines just arrived. Happy with the book, just got a few dinks in the post ๐ซ [...]
Mines damaged too in the top right corner. Envelope sadly not sturdy enough but great book.
For those with dings / damaged books - customer service world class. Sending me a replacement.
Indeed, my one is also damaged, the packaging was simply not fit for purpose tbh.
For people who are getting replacement books due to damage, did you order the first edition copy, and will they be first edition replacements? in my case yes ๐๐ป had to share photos of damage and signature / number Was yours similar or worse than mine (see picture above)? Am I being petty if I were to request a replacement? Did you contact through Shopify? similar damage - I emailed the address on the website and they were super speedy and helpful. I know what people mean about petty but it could have been avoidedโฆ Thanks, sorry I wasnโt suggesting you were petty. I was just trying to gauge general census on how much damage would be acceptable. No damage is acceptable, this is a brand new product, with the correct packaging, there would not have been a problem.
These things are often a learning process.
But for a hardcover, coffee table book in particular, that packaging was not only unsuited for purpose. It was unsuited in a foreseeable way.
Damage to at least some books could have been predicted, simply by examining the flimsiness of the cardboard envelopes being used for dispatch.
It is regrettable there was an unnecessary stumble here at the last hurdle. After what appears to have been a great deal of effort put into the publication itself, for customers to receive copies with dented corners feels a little tragic. Mainly because this kind of damage can be prevented so easily.
That said, it is also reassuring to hear the issue is being addressed by Retail Therapy Office, quickly and professionally, and that damaged books are being replaced.
__________
If Fragile is reading this thread, there is of course an inevitable degree of knocking and bashing that occurs to parcels during transit, even just within the UK. And sometimes it's significant.
Now imagine the level of bashing a parcel might experience if it is being shipped to an overseas address, perhaps on the other side of an ocean.
Simple test for the suitability of book packaging:
1. Take the packaged book and, from a height of about five feet, drop it so that the parcel lands on one of its corners โ corresponding to the top‑right or bottom‑right corner of the book inside.
2. Repeat step 1 once or twice, focusing each time on the same corner.
3. Now open the parcel.
4. If the top‑right or bottom‑right corner of the book inside has remained undented, then your packaging is probably suited for purpose.
__________
Especially with heavier books, whose corners can be especially vulnerable to damage, what is required is both a robustness of the packaging material and appropriate packaging techniques.
That means sturdy, corrugated cardboard.
It also means using a packaging style that provides sufficient buffer space along the length edges of the parcel (of perhaps 3‑6 cm) โ capable of absorbing the impact of any bashing during shipping, to safeguard the condition of the book inside.
__________
For future deliveries of Banksy by Fragile, consider replacing the current packaging with book boxes, also known as book wrap mailers.
At the risk of stating the obvious, these are the cardboard wraparound boxes often used by Amazon when dispatching books.
Key to their protective efficiency are their outer edges (the buffer space referred to above), which bear the brunt of any rough handling that may occur in transit.
Prices do vary, with some selling for about ยฃ1.20 apiece, but I quickly found one source, Kite Packaging, offering a suitable size (PP 3) for less than 30 pence apiece for orders of 250+ units:
www.kitepackaging.co.uk/scp/postal-boxes/book-wrap-cardboard-mailers/
__________
Looking forward to reading the book.

Banksy by Fragile book, by zoomrider on Sept 17, 2024 10:35:00 GMT 1, Got mine through the post (delivered by Evri not Royal Mail?) and immediately feared the worst as the packet had a big hole in where the corner had torn away revealing the book inside. Upon opening it appears however to have survived relatively in tact besides a minor ripple at the corner edge (not enough to warrant a swap). A shame for others though as easily preventable and no doubt now a headache for seller especially those who ordered limited/signed for versions.
Regarding the book itself, Iโve had some time to look through it and must say for Banksy fans itโs a joy. Some tales from Fragile of his history/experiences taking photos of Banksys work around the world (not as many as I thought there might be, stating the obvious perhaps but this is a book of images) but some truly first class photography of his street pieces. As someone mentioned, some Iโve never seen before! Itโs interesting the book stops around 2013. Whether that was when Fragile dealings with Banksy ended or whether there is more to come (Vol. 2) im not sure?
It definitely has the style and feel of an official Banksy publication. Thumbs up from me ๐

Banksy by Fragile book, by sevrin on Sept 17, 2024 10:54:07 GMT 1, Is it just me or should we keep a little perspective that itโs a 30 quid book not a ยฃ300 print The odd dong / ding wouldnโt worry me especially after Iโd read the bloody thing The cost of the item is irrelevant imo, if I buy something new, I want to receive it in new condition, not damaged.

Banksy by Fragile book, by zoomrider on Sept 17, 2024 11:01:30 GMT 1, Got mine through the post (delivered by Evri not Royal Mail?) and immediately feared the worst as the packet had a big hole in where the corner had torn away revealing the book inside. Some tales from Fabric of his history/experiences taking photos of Banksys work around the world (not as many as I thought there might be, stating the obvious perhaps but this is a book of images) but some truly first class photography of his street pieces. As someone mentioned, some Iโve never seen before! Itโs interesting the book stops around 2013. Whether that was when Fabrics dealings with Banksy ended or whether there is more to come (Vol. 2) im not sure? It definitely has the style and feel of an official Banksy publication. Thumbs up from me ๐ Fragile not Fabric :-) Ha! Edited. I did know that honestโฆ clearly still dreaming of my clubbing days at Fabric. ๐

Banksy by Fragile book, by 1nkling on Sept 17, 2024 11:17:07 GMT 1, Like others have said, its a learning process. I've been shipping for various artists for nearly 20 years now and have had my fair share of shipping disasters along the way. Not all book wraps are made equal. Some are nice and sturdy, some are really flimsy. For heavy coffee table style books I tend to wrap them in jiffy foam before putting in the book wrap. I also tape across the inner flaps before fully shutting and taping the outer. That stops everything moving around inside or bursting out the ends. Still not fool-proof though as couriers chuck these things around for fun.

Banksy by Fragile book, by met on Sept 17, 2024 11:34:03 GMT 1, Met, I've had numerous books delivered in book mailers that have been damaged, so their efficacy is not 100%. My book is also dinked sadly.
Sorry to hear about the damage to your copy.
As a slight obsessive when it comes to condition issues (which I often claim is beyond my control), I sympathise and hope you receive a replacement book soon.
My own experience with book wrap mailers has almost always been positive โ at least when the correct size of mailer was used.
When the latter were too large, the books were unfortunately prone to moving around inside their parcels, increasing the likelihood of arriving with dented corners.
__________
I suppose this just requires finding a suitable balance, where the level of risk is deemed acceptable to Retail Therapy Office.
With each packaging option considered, it's a case of weighing up:
(a) the likelihood of damage occuring to the books during transit; and
(b) the cost, time and effort of using that packaging option.
For the dispatch of hundreds or possibly thousands of orders, I would still opt for book wrap mailers.
But if far fewer orders had needed to be dealt with (e.g. just two or three dozen), I'd probably combine the book wrap mailers with some bubble wrap.
Is it just me or should we keep a little perspective that itโs a 30 quid book not a ยฃ300 print The odd dong / ding wouldnโt worry me especially after Iโd read the bloody thing
For normal people, I would agree that your position is reasonable.
Among collector types, you might be in the minority.
Many collectors could be described as abnormal, subnormal, or (if you'll indulge the delusion) above normal.
As with sevrin*, the cost of an item for me is irrelevant. This could be a ยฃ3 magazine, and I'd still be irked if one of its pages had a folded corner.
But then, I'm also the kind of person who gets annoyed by uneven bubble wrap. You can sometimes find me in my kitchen with a straight edge and blade, taking crooked sheets of bubble wrap that arrived in mail parcels, and re‑cutting those sheets to make them straight again.
I'll keep quiet about my routine when it comes to recycling, because otherwise you'd think I was nuts.

Banksy by Fragile book, by 1nkling on Sept 17, 2024 12:03:10 GMT 1, Are they letting you keep your damaged copies when sending replacements? If so I'd buy a signed one with a corner ding as I missed out.
