George Condo, The Insane Clown 2019

Renowned American artist George Condo has generously produced a limited edition etching especially for Tate.

As the title, The Insane Clown, suggests, this is a portrait but not in a traditional sense. Condo, who is known for his twisted tributes to art historical traditions, has layered multiple faces from different perspectives, imitating a cubist aesthetic. Condo adopts a common motif of Pop art through the inclusion of a cartoon face, whilst the disembodied facial features recall the language of Surrealism.

The portrait covers an assortment of facial expressions, including a goofy grin, bulging eyes and a comical grimace. Condo describes his portraits as composites of various emotional states, with the aim of representing the human consciousness in one image. He combines the figurative (of the body) with abstraction (of the mind) to create his unique and original brand of figurative abstraction.

Condo, who has recently returned to print-making, has used etching with dry point to create this edition. The medium of etching suits the style of figurative abstraction whilst also showcasing his accomplished draftmanship. The edition of 30 was printed by Greg Burnet of Burnet Editions, New York, is signed and numbered by the artist and comes unframed.

Please note: As is traditional in editions publishing, prices will increase as an edition sells out. Please note that these edition numbers are the only ones available at this price before it increases to £16,800 including VAT for the last few.

George Condo (b. 1957) has worked in the field of American painting for over 40 years. His unique and evocative style often recontextualizes paintings from the Old Masters with allusions to contemporary American culture. He draws upon a wide variety of influences including Picasso, Velazquez, Matisse and Twombly,

Condo currently lives and works in New York and his work is held in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. and many others.

price is definitely high relative to his other editions but I do like the image though. I'd prefer this one relative to what was shared (lines) and the droopy dog print (which IMO doesnt scream Condo at all)

I love Condo. But this isn’t it. This was an easy pass personally. Too traditional. Looks like something my grandmother would have owned. The lines print is much more appealing. Not sure how they are in size comparison. The droopy dog is small and needs a good framing to stand out well.

i dont own either but personally I see Condo being known for his creative genius inspired by masters such as Picasso which result in a crazy and very distinct style of drawing/imagery (yes, sometimes/often with colors). If i had to point to one between the 2 that's "more condo" this one is definitely it, not the Dog print.

Again, all my opinion but rare to get the chance to debate art here so glad we are doing just that

12k is tier 2 and for members 10.k. Tier 1 was 7k and the next one will be 16k. Saw the print in the flesh and it's decent but overpriced imo.

Met Museum in NYC had a limited edition back in April. Similar to this but it was larger. Pricing was $10K to start and $18k last tier. It was an edition of 25 and sized at 27 inches x 30 inches.

Damn it... I was hounding the met in 2018 when they told me they were working on something with condo. I quit bugging them in 2019 when thier buyer left... Figured they would never get it

Just had a look in the Tate shop, this is a lovely etching, classic Condo. Not in my budget infact far from it but these will find good homes I'm sure.

The Met print is miles ahead of the Tate print image wise, and it’s bigger and a smaller edition. No comparison
