Georg Baselitz ๐ฉ๐ช German Painter & Sculptor , by dreadnatty on Dec 10, 2014 20:29:55 GMT 1, What an idiot.
Whatโs the biggest problem with women artists? None of them can actually paint, says Georg Baselitz
www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/art/news/whats-the-biggest-problem-with-women-artists-none-of-them-can-actually-paint-says-georg-baselitz-8484019.html
Women cannot paint well, despite making up the majority of art students, according to one of Europeโs pre-eminent post-war artists.
Germanyโs Georg Baselitz has dismissed centuries of female artists at a stroke โ from Artemisia Gentileschi and Frida Kahlo to Bridget Riley and Paula Rego โ in his claim that women lack the basic character to become great painters.
Baselitz, who was lauded by the Royal Academy five years ago as one of the greatest living artists, dismissed women painters, saying that they โsimply donโt pass the market test, the value testโ, adding: โAs always, the market is right.โ
His comments sparked a backlash, with one art historian calling them โnonsenseโ.
โWomen donโt paint very well. Itโs a fact,โ the 75-year-old German artist told the German newspaper Der Spiegel. โAnd that despite the fact that they still constitute the majority of students in the art academies.โ
Baselitz conceded there were exceptions, pointing to Agnes Martin, Cecily Brown and Rosemarie Trockel. After praising Paula Modersohn-Becker, however, he added that โshe is no Picasso, no Modigliani and no Gauguinโ.
Griselda Pollock, professor of the social and critical history of art at the University of Leeds, hit back: โThe most boring of all arguments is that men are better than women. Itโs self-evidently nonsense.โ
Pollock, co-author of Old Mistresses: Women, Art and Ideology, said: โOnly few men paint brilliantly and itโs not their masculinity that makes them brilliant. Itโs their individuality.โ
She continued: โYou have to change peopleโs perceptions. Baselitz says women donโt paint very well, with a few exceptions. Men donโt paint very well either, with a few exceptions.โ
Baselitz is a divisive figure in the art world. Art critic Martin Gayford has called him a โwalking monument of art history, one of the major figures of post-war art, and a point of reference for younger artistsโ. The Independentโs Michael Glover, meanwhile, has described him as โself-aggrandising and publicity-seekingโ.
Sarah Thornton, who wrote Seven Days in the Art World, said: โI disagree with him; the market gets it wrong all the time. To see the market as a mark of quality is going down a delusional path. Iโm shocked Baselitz does. His work doesnโt go for so much.โ
The record for a work by Baselitz was ยฃ3.2m in 2011 for his work Spekulatius. The record for a painting by Yayoi Kusama, a female artist, is ยฃ3.8m. In the UK, Bridget Riley has sold for as much as ยฃ2.5m.
Pollock said women were held back by several factors but principally the โmyth of the painter. The image in the West of a lonely, tortured white man. I could run rings around you with great women artists but there isnโt space in the cultural imagination.โ
She added that 20th century art historians had edited out much of the contribution of women painters. โWomen have also been put down, when they are good, as having talent and taste, but being too nice and not taking enough risks. Itโs a sexist hierarchy.โ
Baselitz is not alone in expressing such views about female artists. In 2008, Brian Sewell went further saying there has โnever been a first-rank woman artistโ. He referred to Bridget Riley and Louise Bourgeois as of the โsecond and third rankโ.
Before the opening of Jenny Savilleโs breakout show at the Saatchi Gallery, critic David Sylvester said he โalways thought women couldnโt be paintersโ because โthatโs just the way itโs always beenโ. In 1937, artist Hans Hofmann said Lee Krasnerโs work was โso good, you would not know it was painted by a womanโ.
Ivan Lindsay, an art dealer and writer, said: โThis is a hugely contentious issue. Some people think women just generally arenโt as good, others believe they have been held back throughout history.โ
He continued: โIt is a fairly outrageous and provocative thing for Baselitz to say and we inevitably react against a comment like that. But he has got to an age where he doesnโt care. Others would probably agree but wouldnโt like to stick their head above the parapet.โ

He sounds like a grumbly old man really.
When the tides turn many will wish the focused on collecting female artist while their prices were so suppressed. When our generation enters their later years, the will no longer be gender boundaries like this. Kids just see the world so much different nowadays.

His art is a joke and big deal if some tossers at the RA tell him he is great, he obviously believes all the bullshit.
He hasn't painted anything good for decades and there are thousands of women globally who are far better artists.
Just look today on the Saatchi online website.
There is no difference between women artists and men artists in being able to paint.
Men become famous more often and big name sin the art world because of the myth that is perpetuated that art by men is more valuable.
Of course the old Renaissance etc artists were mostly men due to the power of the Church and their mysoginy towards women and attitudes towards women of the day.
Primitive and Baselitz should look at the shit he produces himself.

If you compare this one to his 'Mano White' series which look a bit the same (but is a picture of a hand instead of a foot) the Centre Pompidou one is from a smaller size (edition of 100 compared to an edition of 120) and a bit larger in size.
The 'Mano White' series is available for around 3-4K. I am not an expert on Baselitz, so maybe I am missing something, but I would say that 1.800 euro for this one is a good deal.

From an investment point of view I would stay far away from this. I can't find an example of a sale of a similar image on Phillips' site, but in general, the print sales don't indicate there being much of a market.

Find the image a bit more inspiring. They have 1 left if somebody is interested. I'm in the building for the next hour and will only charge shipping costs.

Tbh i canโt understand this forum sometimes. This was an incredible opportunity to get an edition of an iconic image for an amazing price by one of the most important artists of our time and no one seemed to care. Honestly shocking and says a lot about this forum. Iโve seen people here spend more on complete garbage like findac or whatson than this Baselitz edition fml. Ridiculous.
