painting is still for sale, at 60% of the Sotheby’s listing , and it’s a better piece .

I would be interested to see what the current gallery prices are for one of his works not an auction price. If there were no bites at $20k then there certainly will be none at 35. Sotheby's can command the rates from reputation, reach, advertising / pictures. For your sake I hope I am proven wrong.

Me personally I would not change my ask based on one auction result. I would decide what I am happy with and stick with it. But changing it 15k on one data point seems odd.
I know he has a solo show in days so would be worth getting the catalog and see what primary market prices are and shoot for that or between that and an auction house. You can also monitor the show and see how fast it sells out that would definitely give you a good sense of market and how to price.
No hate here at all I love Suanjaya and would kill for a piece if I could make it fit my budget as is the case in many artists I missed the boat over analyzing or prioritizing one piece over another... My only solace is there is always another I love and can afford right around the corner.

Don't really see the issue with amending a price if there's been nothing to go by previously, making initial pricing difficult. Not saying the result yesterday instantly sets the new standard but why would someone take less than half of an achieved price for a similar work? Looks to me like the seller has put a price between primary and the auction result - because they're not asking for the auction result and primary is more than 0. I don't know what the current wait list is like for primary - but considering the piece sold yesterday at auction was probably around £1k when it was bought last year I'm assuming it's not as easy to secure one as it was. Best bet if serious about selling is probably via auction than on here. |

Hope the same 2 liek this one. Could very easily go the other way. The Sothebys auction was the artist’s debut which has obviously attracted a lot of attention. There was a lot of hype around this artist pre auction so prices will more than likely increase at least in the short term. Who knows long term |
