Avant Arte are pretty good at filling out the customs notice appropriately so they charge 5 not 20 ... if not you have to go through the HMRC to claim it back

Words words Yeah if they've charged you at 20%, you have to seek reimbursement after. It took about 2-3 months for my last one with the HMRC from submitting the form to getting the money back. Google Form C285 Application for repayment or remission

Google Form C285 Application for repayment or remission Thanks. Annoyingly I paid Fedex the customs charge and then had a message from Avant saying they had put the wrong code on the package and that I shouldn't have paid Fedex. Presumably if the code was wrong then I'm unlikely to be able to recoup the money from HMRC so stuck out of pocket at the moment.

Christian Avant Arte Can you shed any light on this as haven't heard anything more back via email since your team's initial contact? Realising we are hijacking this thread at the moment so can continue in DM if easier. But I think you should be ok. I've been told previously that once the form is in possession of the carrier, there's not much they can do re customs and even the sender can't 'amend' the code unless it's returned and resent. But if the code is genuinely wrong, then I think you should definitely be able to recoup it from HMRC it's just a bit of an annoyance

As is was down to an issue with their booking system they have refunded me the fee I had to pay to Fedex.
Was expecting it to be a long drawn out affair so really impressed with how quickly it was dealt with by the team.
Thanks for your responses.

Roby Dwi Antono • Bulan, by mrizzle on Aug 23, 2022 17:06:43 GMT 1, This isn’t entirely accurate. You should appeal the charge with FedEx in the first instance and check the corresponding paperwork that arrived with the print, both the shipping/flight papers and any invoices. AA are pretty good at listing accurately and applying the correct tariff code but it should be raised with FedEx. You’re going to have a much harder time claiming back retrospectively. Prepare for a lengthy process with FedEx though. I’ve learnt this through several past experiences. I’ve detailed my experiences and frustrations in past posts. FedEx are one of the worst offenders of overcharging in my experience but that may simply be because I’ve had more dealings with them.
Also pretty sure that HMRC only deal with claims against RM rather than private couriers such as FedEx, UPS etc. Someone else may be able to shed more light on this but that was certainly my understanding.

I've had a number of reimbursements from HMRC for shipments via DHL and FedEx. It feels like you're posting the form into a black box but it does work, albeit it takes some time and I actually found them more responsive than taking it up with DHL/FedEx (who consistently have told me they don't have the ability to make decisions on codes, which is often based on what the sender has entered).
As a first step it's always best to contact the sender, as usually the fault is on them and it's good to see above that AA recognised it. I no longer buy from a few because they consistently under-describe items leading to this problem.
