Art as an investment , by reados on May 9, 2007 11:26:53 GMT 1, I had an Idea
Investment, bit of a bad word on the forum don't know why, we have all spent too much on pictures and have unframed pics in folders/ folios under the bed.
Why not re asure yourself that the money you can't afford is actually going towards your new pension fund!
thats my idea anyway, im spent out but still have a need to buy the odd print so i have set my self a limit one print per month that is purley for investment, don't get me wrong this is not e- flipping, apparently investment comapanies are buying up banksy's. why cant i do it on a smaller scale. and there is no reason why your investments can't go on the wall to be enjoyed.
obviously there are risks, but the enjoyment of buying far outdoes the risk.
thoughts and abuse welcome (not that i have thought it through yet!)

Art as an investment , by funster on May 9, 2007 11:34:04 GMT 1, Gordon Brown stopped it in the last budget. Also, if you did you'd have to pay yourself for your collection. You couldn't release the money until retirement. Also, the main benefit of pensions is the juicy 22% or 40% extra (via tax) which you also couldn't get. Nice idea though. The better loopholes are registering an artist as an unlisted AIM under the arts council scheme. Looked into it, it gets complicated!

Art as an investment , by Daniel Silk on May 9, 2007 11:35:12 GMT 1, Well done! Reados ;D
I dont see INVESTMENT as a bad word, I should think in some ways artists would be proud to hear that people see their work as an investment ;D It not only shows that you like it, but also that you feel others will like it when they see it, so the value will rise ;D By investing in art your showing how much faith you have in the artists work ;D I think the vast majority of people on here are buying what they like, but also with investment in mind

Art as an investment , by irf2112 on May 9, 2007 11:36:02 GMT 1, I agree to some extent. In ten+ years time our artwork will probably be worth a whole lot more. But at the same time if its not then no problem as we've purchased what we like.
I feel some art will be worth more whilst others will probably be forgotten - and will probably be worth less. One thing I will say though is - if you are buying for a long term investment you'll need the right paperwork to back it up.

Art as an investment , by sashaz on Apr 26, 2011 18:00:08 GMT 1, I imagine that Banksy is the number one artist to purchase for increase of value compared to intitial cost and also for appreciation of value but how would you rate other artists for desirability and investment?
1) Banksy 2) Eine ? 3) Dface (some pieces) ? 4) ? 5) ?
This is mostly out of interest cos im sure that there are some who purchase for love and some who purchase for investment. Then we have a combination of the two inbetween for the majority.

Art as an investment , by hlarmy on Apr 26, 2011 19:34:40 GMT 1, Art can be an amazing investment but I would hazard a guess that far more people lose money on art than make money, suggesting it's possibly one of the hardest asset classes to 'invest' successfully in. I know if I had spent the amount of time thinking about and reading up on another asset class as I've done with art, I would have made a lot more money, but had a lot less fun. Collecting art is a hobby in my eyes, but that doesn't mean to say I don't consider it an asset and perhaps even an investment.

Not sure where you got that info from. Fox news maybe?
Just joking with you but that is just not accurate. There is so much wrong with your statement.
