Ed Ruscha 🇺🇸 Pop Art • New Print Release • Art For Sale, by Christian Avant Arte on Mar 26, 2024 11:27:47 GMT 1, If it is around 500 usd and signed it will still be a no brainer, but I have my doubts that it is signed. Which of their timed editions haven't been signed? Terrible image, not sure what AA or Ruscha's studio were thinking 😂 We will do some more explaining on the importance of this artwork soon on our website. When I first learned about Ed his work I was probably also more drawn to the mountain works but when you dive really deep into his work and also have seen the show at the Moma you start to realize the importance of some of the early works like OOF and Spam. Anyway anyone is free to have their own opinions of course and should buy what they like/love..

Ed Ruscha 🇺🇸 Pop Art • New Print Release • Art For Sale, by from mjolnir on Mar 26, 2024 11:42:41 GMT 1, Artwiki has a good explanation about it
Like other figures in Pop Art, Ruscha monumentalized the common object: he challenged the traditional notions of fine art by painting mundane objects like the mass produced can of spam. Actual Size highlights consumerism and the strong presence of these commodities in popular culture. The contrast between the top and the bottom of the painting highlighted the mechanisms of advertising: the top half shows an oversized and flashy brand name while the bottom that depicts the product in its actual size. The rapid rise of outdoor advertising changed the visual landscapes of American cities in the 1960s, and artists like Ruscha were reacting to these social and cultural shifts. Actual Size can be viewed as a critique of the superficial and shallow nature of American popular culture that often encourages the glorification of junk. However, as is the case with many Pop Artists, Ruscha’s stance toward popular culture is ambiguous. The artist has often commented about his fondness of the artificial and superficial elements of American mass culture. Actual Size also demonstrates this ambiguity: the monumental depiction of the can of spam is humorous and ironic, but at the same time, the choice of subject shows the dominance of commercial imagery in popular culture.
Still, Actual Size is more than just an ironic depiction of advertising and consumer culture imagery. In the painting, the artist deals with fundamental questions of composition and scale. Actual Size invites a comparison between the top and bottom half, and the painting draws the viewer close to canvas since one has to be near the canvas to read the words ‘actual size’ written in pencil. The viewer needs to observe the painting both from close and from afar to fully appreciate all of its elements. Other early paintings like Flash, L.A Times (1963) and Large Trademark with Eight Spotlights (1962) also explored issues of scale and proportion. Therefore, while Ruscha’s early paintings commented on American consumer culture, they also touched upon subjects fundamental to issues of composition and painting.

Good luck with the drop, I happen to like the Spam.

Ed Ruscha 🇺🇸 Pop Art • New Print Release • Art For Sale, by its all about me on Mar 26, 2024 12:45:53 GMT 1, It does make me wonder how the image is decided upon for these print releases. Does the artist insist that only a certain image should be produced in a cheap(ish) edition? Or does the art publisher have more of an influence over these things? And why bring out what I consider to be one of his worst prints ever? Perhaps he doesn't want his best work to end up in a large edition.
I was looking forward to this release. Now I'm feeling quite disappointed.

Ed Ruscha 🇺🇸 Pop Art • New Print Release • Art For Sale, by Winter on Mar 26, 2024 13:14:14 GMT 1, Great from a historical point of view but not something many people would want on their wall. Strange choice and not one I would have gone for. So many to choose from it feels like a missed opportunity. Hopefully they'll do another one after this one.

Just out of interest, which would you have gone for? (Only asking because I thought that, and then couldn't really settle on one that was noticeably better - by that I mean likely to be more popular - than what they chose)

Ed Ruscha 🇺🇸 Pop Art • New Print Release • Art For Sale, by Fuzzyduck121 on Mar 26, 2024 15:28:43 GMT 1, yeah the mattress work from TZK is mega haha
in terms of this work, SPAM on second and third look is a brilliant idea for a timed work that is ironic and iconic at the same time
Anyone who thinks they will sell less than 1000 of these has little knowledge of Ed's appeal or market
His base of collectors and those who know his work, especially in the US , would make the size of say the Condo market seem miniscule
In addition this will be printed and marketed in conjunction with an enormous LACMA / MoMa show that has and will attract a seriously large number of visitors and can be cross marketed to lots and lots of folk
Expect this to have mass appeal as its very hard for most of those who know his work to afford anything and the chance to buy a work of quality is lacking
Yes everyone wants a Hollywood or mountain or a gas station but this would potentially work very well, hopefully theres more than one print available

Ed Ruscha 🇺🇸 Pop Art • New Print Release • Art For Sale, by quicksnap on Mar 26, 2024 18:11:30 GMT 1, I'm very excited about this image. Having grown up in Los Angeles and going to LACMA for field trips since I was quite young, this is an iconic piece for me. So, I would be very pleased to be able to have this on my wall. I'm not saying I wouldn't be super stoked for a Norm's print, cause that would be incredible. There are several others I'd love to have as well. It's like any art, people have their reasons why they like/dislike something. But, this being part of the LACMA permanent collection for so long, makes total sense that this would be the release to benefit the museum.

Ed Ruscha 🇺🇸 Pop Art • New Print Release • Art For Sale, by ignition0 on Mar 26, 2024 22:10:13 GMT 1, We can probably make an educated guess how much it will be from the calibre of previous timed edition artists and the prices eg. Anish Kapoor, Elizabeth Peyton etc. Spoiler alert - it will be more than £1k that’s for sure.

Ruscha did this in 1962 which was around the same time Warhol did his soup cans. The use of the word spam with reference to popular culture was as relevant then, as it is now... very appropriate for a timed edition.

Screw it. I'm putting it on the wall. My family will run screaming, but such is life.
