Who is Banksy? The Identity of the Artist Banksy, by a4mnt on Jul 14, 2008 21:25:36 GMT 1, why does it really matter what the guys name is.
i can't imagine anyone really giving a fuck.
a few weeks back the Daily Mail ran a piece on how they were privileged as the only paper to have got into the Cans Preview on Friday night. they were fawning all over 'Banksy' then. Now look what they are doing....hashing facts and just trying to sell more papers through slack journalism.
i don't understand why they major on the point that he might have gone to a public school. so what? surely the majority of Banksy's work is a social comment, particularly about civil liberties being eroded, but i'm not sure why that point couldn't be made by a left or right wing activist. i'm trying to think of some of his work that makes out he's from a poor background, in which case the Mail's article would have a little substance, but i can't.
Its all just bollocks. People should get a grip.
Does Reginald Dwight get named and shamed halfway through Candle in The Wind?

Who is Banksy? The Identity of the Artist Banksy, by hlarmy on Jul 14, 2008 21:43:24 GMT 1, I agree, and personally don't give a rat's arse whether he (or she ) is anonymous or not.
His anonymity has worked massively in his favour as a marketing tool and has no doubt helped in creating publicity in the past couple of years. But at the end of the day, the main factor that has seen him reach the heights he has is his art (the originality, the humour, the execution etc). I also question whether he needs this anonymity tag anymore...
The only issue that may come of this is the legal side of things - not so much the legality of his grafitti, but any tax implications of past sales (assuming that tax hasn't been paid in the past).

Who is Banksy? The Identity of the Artist Banksy, by Avian Security on Jul 14, 2008 21:54:34 GMT 1, The public school taunts are pretty funny. And by funny I mean dumb. All the graff artists I knew, or knew of when I was growing up were public schoolboys. Some things never change. And remind me of the part where Banksy claimed to be a working class hero, must've missed it.

I agree with posters here though. Who gives a rat's (or monkey's come to that) arse what his name or identity is. The work stands.

Who is Banksy? The Identity of the Artist Banksy, by They call me Stephen on Jul 15, 2008 16:19:11 GMT 1, Like most people on here I couldn’t care less what Banksy looks like nor where he’s come from. It’s his current political/social commentary and execution of street pieces that have made me an admirer of his work along with his undeniable artistic talent! I personally find any kind of public schoolboy slur to be a bit rich when he apparently left school after his GCSEs. Like someone wittily pointed out had Banksy truly been working class he wouldn’t have existed today, he’d be too busy working in a regular 9-5 job.
Interesting point on yesterday’s newsnight about how he needs to retain his anonymity in order to execute any future street pieces and therefore market value. Tend to agree with this. Surely it’s only a matter of time before his actions are being watched by journalists, police, fans etc etc. If anything I think he needs to go even further underground now to survive

I don't know - there's 2 issues here. The first is getting away with it at the time the second is the "authorities" coming to find/prosecute him later. Nothing really changes with the first and the second simply requires a denial if he's painted on public property. Everyone will know it was him but unless he is caught in the act it will be very difficult to prove.
