I'm after some advice for the 'Love' prints by Robert Indiana - I would like one to display along with my D*face hate...
I've looked a quite a few on ebay over the last few weeks and have noticed quite varying prices - I was wondering if this is because there was comissioned copies of the original print(s) that would fetch a lower price that an original
Also would I be wise in getting full COA for this kind of print or buy direct from a gallery?
Any advice is greatly appreciated

I would think going with a gallery would be the safest way to go With such an Iconic image like that you could find loads of dodgy pieces about But if all you after is the basic image maybe a good quality poster of it framed up would do the job? ;D Just an idea! ;D

Yeah, I was thinking that could be the best bet...although if one of these were to pop up with a COA from a private seller, you would assume this to be legit I mean, is there really that many dodgy ones floating around....

I visit Philadelphia two years ago and I think I saw two LOVE sculptures. One at the end of the long road from the Art Gallery (museum) and another on the campus of Penn State University.

There are some fake Robert Indiana's around so I would be reluctant to buy one off the bay. Variances on these prints crop up in nearly every contemporary art sale run by Bonhams, Christies, Sotherbys etc so if I were you I would wait for one of those.

another good place is swann galleries in new york. they do auctions every week. they deal in just about everything, but they do have contemporary and modern sales. i flew there and bought an original signed picasso poster, a warhol cow and a warhol lincoln center ticket. alot of their work is not mint, but you get some great deals. i think its the stuff first rate galleries pass on, thinking their hob snob clients only want mint mint stuff. i highly recommend!

just from having a quick scout around in the last few mins it looks like £1000 would be about as cheap as you;d get from the original print run

Have a look at those on there and see what the galleries will take - if you make them an offer they can only refuse!

Funnily enough I've been scouting about for one of these for the last 2 weeks. $5,000 for an early print isn't unusual...which is why I ain't got
one yet...

I even debated a woven/carpet style one for almost 3 seconds...

Try the major auction houses jboy. They almost invariably have some in their contemporary print auctions. I have seen some variants sell for less than £300 at auction.

Just checked by bookmarks - rogallery.com - they have it in French and Hebrew as well...

Last one I saw was at a bonhams contemporary print auction about 6-9 months ago.

Don't forget you need to add the commission +vat to that so it comes to a bit more.

Ocontemporary in Brighton had one to match your Hate print Jboy, it sold for £1250+vat. It was signed and numbered from a run of 200.

That one's too big to match the D*Face print, but you could buy one then photocopy it down to size, and then send it back to the shop. Hey presto! A Robert Indiana print for a fiver.
