Flipping Art • The Debate, by dgb133 on Aug 7, 2007 16:28:48 GMT 1, And most importantly - LET'S NOT FORGET! Baggers and Flippers would go extinct if it weren't for pathetic fools who are willing to blow their entire savings on prints and pay any price!
I admit I've fallen victim to it myself. And yes I've sold stuff for more than I paid too, although every cent of profit I've made has gone right back in to art. And it's easy to get swept up in this stuff but sometimes people need to get their emotions in check. You will live and can have a happy life even if you don't have that Trollies print on your wall ...or whatever is your favorite. After collecting things for a couple years I've reached the point where I don't chase anything. I've been able to detach myself from the overemotional aspect and I only buy things that are good deals for the most part. As of now I've pretty much given up on my quest for a Banksy for a Micallef. I just don't need it. Not at those prices anyway.

I think the first post Morons thread read something like "So how much am I going to have to pay for a signed Morons once they hit the bay!" Once we're in the aftermath of the next Banksy release - THE ONLY thing people are going to be talking about is how much they're going to have to pay to get a Trollies when they hit the bay.
Hell, might as well start talking about that now!!! Get ahead start!!!

Flipping Art • The Debate, by T-Bro on Oct 28, 2007 18:20:32 GMT 1, What ever the commodity where there is high demand there are always going to be people who will be in it just for the money. This happens with tickets, houses, artwork, music. Put limited edition on something and it seems it immediately makes it more desirable. It works with most things, even Marmite! ( see the Guinness jars, Crazy!). i know i fall for it, why not, Guinness marmite is da bomb ;D
What i don't really understand is why people get so annoyed about people who buy and then sell their items, even if it is the day after. If you do your research you will generally know when something is coming out and if you read this board, Wall Candy and the numerous other websites you will be bound to build a collection that any collector would be proud of. Will it really matter if you don't get the trolleys print? Unless you are planning to sell it of course and then I guess you would be annoyed that someone got there first. I have managed to get 2 out of the 3 releases form Banksy, It was my Dads birthday on the day/night they sold. I guess i was slightly annoyed but didn't lose sleep over it. life goes on.
I have bought, sold, traded and built up a fair collection. I have made mistakes, I has sold signed Banksys for £150, i have turned down a signed banksy canvass in favour of another artist. Its all an interesting journey. Don't get hung up on what others are doing. concentrate on your own collection and start small. buy what you like, my personal recommendation is to buy it from source, even if its not a banksy.
There are still some great items to pick up on POW, scrawl collective and numerous other site. If you have got £500 to splash on a bansky and don't get it, how about £250 on buying 3-5 prints and £250 on framing.
Please people, stop whining about what others are selling their personal possessions for. over and out.

Flipping Art • The Debate, by ABC on Oct 28, 2007 18:59:00 GMT 1, Its hard to concentrate on collecting when you don't get a chance to buy anymore. I too have had chances to buy some very nice works that nowadays would be 100k+ but choose not to at the time, I still IMO have a quite nice collection though. My issue is the fact that those times have gone, in the current climate you don't get time to look and if you do its to late to buy.

My issue is the fact that those times have gone, in the current climate you don't get time to look and if you do its to late to buy. Agreed ABC, the times of being able to ponder a piece is over, but happily so is the automatically profitable flip. there have been a few decent prints in the last 6 months that were picked up and bought to flip with no real profit being made, such as Faile strange encounters, cli-che, D&G, GIWTBB. Its not gone away but the flipping problem has died down significantly in the last while. The speed alot of things go is down to a wider audience nowadays, look at the choe city girl, a lovely print with very few being flipped. I also missed out on some classics, have been able to develop a decent collection and have enjoyed it along the way, the scene has changed for both bad and good, as alot more people have an interest in the art now than 18 months ago, and thats great.

Flipping Art • The Debate, by stuey09 on Oct 28, 2007 19:25:23 GMT 1, Also worth remembering that a lot of flippers have had their fingers burned over the last few months. The beautiful losers, Blek, Dface and so on have sold for less than the cost price in some cases. As a result I believe that people who buy for the sole intention of profit are playing a dangerous game, except for the guarantees of one or two artists such as Banksy.

Flipping Art • The Debate, by lesbianwednesdays on Oct 28, 2007 19:26:43 GMT 1, i think it's quite a worry to have so many empathisers, there are drug dealers and pimps who make money off other people's backs, albeit illegal and slighty more of an issue than flipping, we're not about to say that that's ok are we? if something is wrong morally, ethically or legally then you should stand up for yourself and try and do something about it.
i'm not saying that moaning about it and writing on here is going to solve much but neither should we roll over and accept it. if those who have no desire whatsoever to keep hold of the print don't bother buying it then those that do want it would have a substantially better chance of getting one and also there would be a lot less bad feeling knowing you missed out to another collector who will frame and hang it.

Flipping Art • The Debate, by Simococo on Oct 28, 2007 19:40:01 GMT 1, Most people are only ever one step away from being a flipper. You buy something you really want. Its worth a lot more the next day and someone offers you something you want maybe more for the same amount your new piece is worth, so you sell to the raise the cash. You are a flipper.... Unless you loaded its like buying houses. The Art Ladder. Now who wants to buy my f'cking Eelus....?

I picked a jar up last week out of curiosity, I expected it to taste different but it's so similar that it doesn't make any difference.

take a risk, go prospecting and just maybe you may just find that mother lode and set a new profile!
