Have seen some recent discussion on Pendleton and hadn't previously been away that folks here liked his work.  Ive been a fan for a while so why not start a thread (and hopefully more threads on contemporary artists).  With an upcoming (previously pushed date) show at MoMA in September Im excited to see what's ahead.  

Adam Pendleton "Who is Queen" MoMA Sep 18, 2021–Jan 30, 2022 MoMA

The Museum of Modern Art will present Adam Pendleton: Who Is Queen?, a large-scale multimedia installation that will be on view in the Donald B. and Catherine C. Marron Atrium from July 25 through Oct 4, 2020. Based in New York, Adam Pendleton (American, born 1984) is a Conceptual artist who uses historical and aesthetic content from visual culture to explore the ways in which context influences meaning. Pendleton reconfigures words, forms, and images to provoke critical questioning.

For this presentation, Pendleton’s monumental installation will bring the formal mechanics of musical counterpoint—the folding and unfolding of simultaneous voices—into contact with the aesthetics of protest. For the duration of the exhibition, MoMA’s Marron Atrium will be transformed into an arena encompassed by three wooden, floor-to-ceiling vertical scaffolds. These modular systems, built from four basic units, will be designed to resemble balloon framing used in American house construction.

Who Is Queen? critically questions the notion of the museum as repository. Utilizing social and contrapuntal compositions, Who Is Queen? will include a months-long program of live events, including screenings, readings, lectures, and musical performances. It will also serve as a platform for the display of layers of exhibited material: new paintings, drawings, and sculptures; moving images; slideshows of archival material; and a sound piece.

Who Is Queen? can be understood as a sophisticated, generative device through which a multiplicity of sounds and images are captured, modified, displayed, and played back. The work is a “machine” imperfectly regulated by an algorithmic score that presents, documents, collects, archives, digests, and represents material. Audio documentation of the live events will be edited and mixed back into the installation on a regular basis, and each day of the exhibition will feature a different combination of looped tracks played simultaneously.

The project is in part a response to popular mobilizations of the past decade such as the Black Lives Matter and Occupy movements. Drawing on the work of figures as disparate as Michael Hardt, Ruby Sales, and Glenn Gould, Who Is Queen? seeks to present works at the nexus of abstraction and politics.

Thanks! I am a big fan of Pendleton’s work. I have a few of his books (Radio one, grey-blue grain, Becoming Imperceptible and his latest monograph). Unfortunately no print yet as they always sell out very fast.

The last few prints at auction feel very reasonable priced for what they are. As far as accurate representation of his original works his prints show up very well.   This release from White Chapel Gallery years back was a fine example.

Ha, An argument can be of course made that 5-7k on a piece of paper is in itself unreasonable to most. But in seeing what many here spend this amount on I would personally find it within reason to spend this amount on this artist if you like the work

He's a pace artist - the youngest one they signed I think. He's in museums with more shows lined up. People are scrambling for his work - he's trajectory is only one way. The pace edition $3500 sold in a blink and galleries asking x2-3. To answer your original question, buy what you can whilst he's still attainable in the next 12 months.

Personally, it all comes down to the type of print and the edition size. 20 is nice a small, 50 is moderate but still good.

With the way APs market is going, he’s getting tons of well deserved recognition, so it won’t be long until these prints hit 10K+.

But buy what you love, forget about the market! His work is really incredible. I’m so jaded that I missed the Pace release.

Personally I would find it extremely fair. But I’m also not giving trading advice so of course to each their own.

Can anyone explain Black Dada?

I see it this way: Dada was created as a response to the atrocities of the First World War. Dada is a mixture of visual art, poetry, theater and graphic design. Pendleton's work is a mixture of all those artforms too. With his work he responds to society's attitude towards Black Americans.

But maybe I am totally wrong!

And yet his juxtapositions do have a point. In this case, Pendleton is drawing connections between classic European Dadaist texts, which were responding to the violence and trauma of World War I, and the writings of figures like Black Arts Movement leader LeRoi Jones (Amiri Baraka), responding to the violence of racism in the 1960s. Relating these art historical threads creates an avenue for considering the experiences of shock and displacement in both anew, opening up new potential associations.

Found it on some obscure website. But if you like his work I would suggest you buy his monograph which gives a real good overview of his work.
