Sealing a Print in w/ Silicone, by Jules Leotard on Apr 22, 2021 2:39:04 GMT 1, Has anyone heard of or done this? I used to help my father mat and frame art that my parents have. I have a bunch of prints that I need to frame and protect. I was contemplating using a second sheet of acrylic/ plexi (w/out UV protective coat) on the back (in effect sandwiching the print) and then sealing the edge with silicone and setting it into the frame. This would allow me to never have to worry about humidity changes. Is this ridiculous overkill?
The framing from front to back would go:
frame - UV Conservation Acrylic - mat(s) - print - acid free paper - regular acrylic (against wall)
The edge of the underlined bits would be sealed with silicone.
Is this just a bad idea? Thoughts?

Care to elaborate?
The silicone would be 3 - 4 inches away from the print (the mat distance to edge) and would be easily reversible if you want to peel it out of the crack between the acrylic sheets.

step away from this idea - the silicone will harm your print in a few months!
have you never heard about what common silicone on the back of a mirror does with the silver foiling of the mirror (e.g)?

Reason 1: and taking the example of isolant window glasses. After you put the two sheets of glass, and seal with silicone you have two options:
- Making vacuum to take off all the air (it already contains humidity that may cause condensation)
- Inject Argon at 90%. Same reason, not allowing to have air inside
And also, all around, that metal you see contains anti-humidity small balls (do the same as silica gel in packaging)
Reason 2: even though there are acid-free silicons (in the company where I work we have "glued" thousands of mirrors with that silicone with not a problem -acid one will cause the efect told before-), I wouldn't play with the possibility that still a very small portion of acidity exists, when you are talking about having art nerby

The pH neutral mirror silicone is something I wasn't aware of existing, and yeah (javier) I do see what your saying about the possibility of acid existing or developing over time as the silicone ages. I'd also guess that the mat buffer would wick anything to the print over time.

Sealing a Print in w/ Silicone, by John The Badgers on Apr 23, 2021 18:54:58 GMT 1, I have some framed bits in my bathroom julesleotard, I used silicon to 'seal' the item, no idea if its acid free, but been there for 3-4 years, no issue at all. I used it round the glass.
They're not expensive items, that said, wanted to protect from moisture in the bathroom, and no issues for me, actually worked very well.
