Art Restoration in LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง Who do you Recommend?, by redefine on Aug 23, 2022 20:40:40 GMT 1, A very annoying feeling today when I received a print I ordered from the States arriving with a small crease:
Pretty baffled! I was really looking forward to get it and frame it but I'm quite annoyed now - I knew the risks with shipping overseas but still....
Does anyone have any recommendation to fix it & frame it in London (so that I don't have to ship it again)? I'm pretty sure this has happened before...
Not sure how much it would cost - it's a $300 print so if it's an expensive fix I may have to get used to the crease.
I saw people can fix it with some DIY but I don't want to take any risks on this one...
Thanks for any input!

Art Restoration in LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง Who do you Recommend?, by drbf on Aug 23, 2022 23:27:45 GMT 1, I am not in London but I have had creases removed from prints. It is a simple process but must be done by an art conservator.

I have no idea what's the cost implied in a process like this (and I'm just trying to figure out if it would cost more than the print itself)
Thanks

Art Restoration in LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง Who do you Recommend?, by Hubble Bubble on Aug 24, 2022 10:14:58 GMT 1, It depends on the value of the print.
Graham Bignell is one of the best in London... others use others but I like the Bignell studio.
However, it's not cheap and will cost several hundred pounds. I've done cheaper prints/maps myself using brown paper and an iron.

Art Restoration in LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง Who do you Recommend?, by A Broke Collector on Aug 25, 2022 5:03:39 GMT 1, If you purchased it from 1xRun reach out to them, and they will likely replace it. If not a conservator would be the way to go.

Art Restoration in LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง Who do you Recommend?, by Trevorm on Aug 25, 2022 9:50:32 GMT 1, No need for a conservator - do it yourself. You need a blanket; good quality brown paper; deionised water in an atomiser; medium heat iron. Lay out the blanket, put on a sheet or two of the brown paper then apply a light spray of deionised water. Carefully place the print on the dampened brown paper, lightly spray the an approximate area of the โdamageโ on another sheet of the good quality brown paper, place it on the print and lightly iron out the crease. You could try and do a sample first or if concerned/worried pop it round to me and Iโll do it while you have a cup of tea and a Hobnob โฆโฆ.. Iโm in London

Iโm in London I'm particularly bad with DIY that requires any sort of 'precision'. The crease it's very minimal and yes I agree, it definitely doesn't need a conservator. Ah it's great that you are in London... have you tried it before on any prints? I'm sure if I do it myself I will ruin the print....

Art Restoration in LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง Who do you Recommend?, by John The Badgers on Aug 25, 2022 11:51:38 GMT 1, I know they are not London based redefine, but have used Caroline Harrison Conservation? Certainly recommend.
I'm sure she will be more reasonable than those there fancy London places/prices.
That said, Mr Trevorm on to something, and wouldn't be scared of tackling it myself?
I have one of the damaged signed Jarvis Cocker posters, if you can get a bit of moisture in the area of the crease, and then put between some ply etc, that will work.
I have a homemade folder made with ply, bit of glassine paper, left it in there for a week or so, flat as you like afterwards -

Art Restoration in LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง Who do you Recommend?, by Theories 123 on Sept 30, 2022 16:27:08 GMT 1, The ยฃ550 will include humidifying and pressing which they would usually charge ยฃ350 for on it's own. If you find another company offers just to remove the tape the pricing would suggest you would be looking at nearer ยฃ200. I'm certainly not suggesting GBS are cheap but there's more involved than just attacking it with some tweezers.

Plenty of paper restorers in the country who will charge under half that and do it themselves (rather than outsourced or one of GBS apprentices) and do it quicker and just as well, from my experience

Art Restoration in LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง Who do you Recommend?, by moron on Oct 4, 2022 10:58:44 GMT 1, Better to pay a restorer the price they ask and get the job done correctly than hawk around for low prices.
I know someone who restores paintings as a professional and was told by them the amount of owners who have money but haggle over restoration prices without realisng the amount of work and hours that go into what looks like a simple restoration on the surface but is not.
I was asked to restore an old oil small painting for some one once. I told them 200. They replied that's too much. They would only pay 100. Despite having lot's and lot's of money. I said OK. Used acrylics instead of oils (took less time) Gave them back the painting it looked ok. Got word back later that they were not happy. F**k them, you get what you pay for.

Art Restoration in LONDON ๐ฌ๐ง Who do you Recommend?, by dotdot on Oct 4, 2022 11:37:39 GMT 1, i know a restorer - but sadly he has moved out of london.
which is good for him.. but not for me , of course.
.. nice chap - does know his stuff and will work on a work until he is happy.
once washed a work on paper .. approx SIXTY times to remove a mark we didn't like.
..did he charge.. yeah .. but <not> sixty times the orig quote.
GB is, i hear , good .. but i can't comment on his business approach.
I guess he might be saying he doesn't have competition and doesn't need a lot of work.. without saying it.
btw , if you need his detail pm me... op only please, he doesn't do riff raff , and yeah that was a joke.
