Watch Collectors, by horationelson on Jan 17, 2021 19:47:42 GMT 1, My 1950s Zenith - day to day wearer. Can’t get on with the size of modern watches, so have a collection of stuff from the 70s and older. 1970s Omega DeVille, 1960s Constellation that was my dad’s, plus a 1930s Omega dress watch. Rest are a proper mix - my favourite of those is a 50s Lord Elgin. All worn regularly - no flat file for any of them 🙂
That’s a beauty. Reminds me a bit of the ALS Saxonia Thin. I went through a phase 2-3 years ago of buying, wearing, not enjoying (so ultimately selling) modern sports Rolexes. If I bother getting another watch, it will be something that looks just like this.

Watch Collectors, by Lord Lucas Roham on Jan 17, 2021 20:08:42 GMT 1, Trying to get a Black face Rolex Milgauss, been put on the local AD's 'waiting list. We're in lockdown here so it's going to be a while. Can't wait to get my hands on it. Will be my first watch with the exception of fitness trackers. Thoughts on the Milgauss? I know it's a very 'love it or hate it' watch. You are right, it is the Marmite sports rolex. Personally think the black is the best of the modern variant - green xtal least loved! Why not go Vintage if you like the model though? Not making any more and was always the under dog and for that reason much rarer. Still find some nice Black dial (non honeycomb, of course) variants out there for reasonable money - unlike other steel sports of that era. Not for long I would guess as people always looking for that next thing - investment value BS.
Waiting list/expression of interest lists, whatever you want to call them, quite frankly are NOW pointless, unless youre spending big bucks (aka building a relationship )with AD!? Why not go grey market if it is just modern that you want as they are much cheaper than retail which is unheard of when it comes to SSSR - the only sports model that is!
Thanks the the reply. Even the Milgauss is coming in at 1.5-2k above retail in the UK. From what I gather, for years it was a window watch and now the insane Rolex hype has pushed it onto the waiting list.
I had a video call with the AD and we seemed to get on well, we talked for an hour and he's followed up a couple of times so fingers crossed I passed the 'interview' and it won't be too long.
I really want a new watch, one I can pass down to my son and am in no real rush. I did hear that the Milgauss may be getting discontinued again so hopefully that doesn't happen anytime soon.

Watch Collectors, by andypandy on Jan 17, 2021 21:39:58 GMT 1, What watch is a good entry into the world of investing in watches
If its within the budget then a good one to try and get would be a Rolex Explorer II - strongly rumoured to be discontinued/replaced with a new version soon. They don’t seem to command as much of a premium on the secondary market either.
Alternatively Tudor Black Bay 58 or Tudor Black Bay GMT are also a great entry level watch.

Why? It’s nice to discuss people’s passion. This is a forum of collectors. Is it the value that you find offensive?

Watch Collectors, by andypandy on Jan 17, 2021 22:17:19 GMT 1, What watch is a good entry into the world of investing in watches I am very cautious of suggesting anything related to an “investment” when it comes to watches. There are some fairly safe bets but the watch world has been in a bubble for a number of years now and you’re going to pay top dollar for most desirable watches these days. Your best bet if you’re looking for an investment is to create a relationship with an AD and hope to be offered some of the more sought after pieces at cost. However, brands like Rolex know what they’re doing and demand far outweighs supply so you’re looking at a lengthy wait for something like a Batman (preferred the older bracelets personally), Submariner or Daytona for example. You are very unlikely to ever lose money with any of the “Holy Trinity” (Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin and Patek Philippe). However, I think you’d also be relatively safe with A Lange & Sohne or Rolex. However, I buy my watches to wear and ultimately my advice is to discover your preferred style and makes and buy what you’d like to wear. If it holds its money or increases in value then that’s a bonus. Oh...and don’t ever buy quartz watches. For me a huge amount of my passion for watches relates to the craftsmanship and history of a brand. Quartz watches are always going to be reliable but there’s no romance or craftsmanship behind those types of movements. I’m no leading authority on this and, judging by some of the collections already on show, there will be others who can speak to this better than I can. Hope that helps a little as a starter. I think it is highly likely that you would drop money on the "Holy Trinity"
The majority of PP can be bought at under RRP, same goes for a lot of VC and AP.
Problem is that the RRP"s are all a good 5 figures and rising and there are only a few models that are worth a decent premium but the politics around trying to acquire them at RRP are on a different level.
That's some proper dick swinging knowledge on the prices btw.....

If the 10k is GBP you should be able to get both no problem

Watch Collectors, by tab1 on Jan 18, 2021 0:24:22 GMT 1, I’m more of a Casio ‘Foxtrot 91 Whisky’ kind of guy myself. An incredibly understated watch that not only looks superb on the wrist (the sharp edges compliment my jawline) but also tells time perfectly. I got mine at a reduced price from Argos about 7 years ago and still haven’t needed to replace the battery. An understated classic.
My daily is a Casio

Had bad press a few years back, but one of the most popular watches worldwide

Watch Collectors, by tab1 on Jan 18, 2021 0:28:29 GMT 1, i bought and sold too often, sold some that I should have held eg submariners, but probably bought some that were always going to drop in value. My first “good” watch was a Rolex Date bought in 1995 in Saudi Arabia. I dont know if you even still get a Rolex Date, this was an Aramco(the oil company) watch that every employee got if you worked for Aramco for 10 years. Many employees took these straight to a local watch dealer untouched, still fully wrapped with full paperwork and i bought one of these. Still have it somewhere.
Logo emblem watches used to be frowned upon a few years back by collectors and could often be bought cheaper than an unmarked example . Now in the last 5 years they have become highly sought after . The Tiffany logos are highly sought after .
With a new market in these variants , the latest seen in Tudor black bay Qatar edition highly sought after by Tudor collectors

Watch Collectors, by tab1 on Jan 18, 2021 0:34:21 GMT 1, Isn’t there hundreds of blogs and forums you can discuss watches and even bitcoins on? Where is this all going? I heard a Mickey Mantle baseball card sold for $5.2 million yesterday... baseball cards next? Apologies sir...
urbanartassociation.com/board/101/chat-forum
Just to add this is on the sub forum / chat forum specifically to discuss such topics Right at the bottom of the home page, often missed, so not clogging up the main board, if you clicked new posts or threads might not be aware and assume posted on the main board?

No need to be sideways Balboa
I personally am not embarrassed about contributing to a thread about collecting watches. I love watches. They are nice things to have. Just like art, You look at them and you enjoy them, you understand their history and if you are in a position to do so, you may be able to start a collection. That is what I did. When I stopped drinking/drugging/gambling, I got clean and got my life back on track and I wanted to teach myself how to find a way to not keep my money in the bank and be able to enjoy it more and at the same time, have some possessions that I could pass down to my son and maybe teach him some things differently from the way I was taught.
For me, this forum is a way to keep me occupied for parts of each day and take a little bit of my mind off of the atrocities that are going on, the MH issues that I have and also the fact that I have been testing positive for COV-19 for past 3 weeks. My watches along with my art are just things. None of them make me feel any better as a person. None of them are needs. They are simply Bi-products of decisions I made in the past.
If you really wanted to, you could unpick hundreds of threads on this forum and say there is a lack of humility within a lot of them
I would swap all my material possessions to be able to have my business back, spend time with my friends and loved ones again, not have a plandemic and illegal non-trialled vaccine, for some sort of normality to return in my life.
We don’t take any of it with us when its time for us to go.
But until such time, Ill personally keep doing whatever necessary to stop myself from going insane. If that comes across to anyone like I don't have any humility then I would say it is not really any of my business what people think of me.
See It’s good to share...and probably saved me from having to do a meeting today.

Watch Collectors, by billybob1969 on Jan 27, 2021 0:17:23 GMT 1, I have a stunning collection of dildos and buttplugs, I have a very rare Silki buttplug from 1968 that is diamond encrusted and now discontinued, highly collectible. My collection has been valued at over £1.5m but I’m not one to show off, I used to have a watch collection but that’s just really embarrassing and cringy so I switched to sex toys.

Watch Collectors, by BKBOI on Jan 27, 2021 1:54:53 GMT 1, Not a collector, just have one nice watch that never leaves my wrist. Panerai radiomir (PAM384) ceramic manual wind, I’m a fan of the brand especially their ceramic and carbotech watches. Beautiful watch! Was a PAM guy. I still have an 005 which I kept as a casual/everyday watch. However, I am rebelling against the modern sizes and have been wearing an Explorer 114270 for the past 3 months. It is so liberating not to bang your watch against a door or furniture.
