I came across this article about Friedrich Kunath recently, it's a good read.

His art is not urban although I've the feeling that there're some borrowings from street art. Parts of some paintings remind me on Neo Rauch (New Leipzig School).

He's not a newcomer at all but I haven't read about him here in the forum and thought it's worth to mention.

First off Kunath is one of my favorite artists at the moment. I flat out love his work - it checks every box for me. From what I’ve been able to tell with a few inquiries his originals are above my pay grade. I was pretty stoked to see that he’s releasing a limited (small) edition hand finished print, especially an image that i’d gladly frame and hang. 

Emailed Vogel and went back and forth with Sebastian. He seems like a good fellow and is very prompt on the comms. Unfortunately the print is way above my budget - was seriously not expecting it to be nearly $4k! Sucks because I was ready to pull the trigger at maybe 1/3 - 1/2 that. 

So I guess I’m curious:
1) Is Kunath that much more collectible than I realized? $4k print collectible?
2) Are people going for it?
3) Is anyone else here interested in him?
4) Anyone know where to find semi affordable small works of his?

I'm in the same boat. I have been following him for a coupe of years and have become a real fan. Unfortunaltely, I missed the edition he released with Vogel some months ago (900€ framed if I remember correctly).

I found two well-priced C-prints availble here: www.schinkelpavillon.de/editions/

Not my cup of tea honestly but maybe something for you. They're definitely affordable.

Thanks for the heads up on those 2 prints. They’re affordable but not my cup of tea either. Not really representative of his recent style. 

I would have gladly paid $1200-1500 for this new edition and was actually pretty shocked by the asking price. I’ve been following him for the better part of 2 years as well, more so in the past year, and I suppose didn’t have a gauge on his collectibility or popularity. $4k for a small limited edition (albeit hand finished) print is steep and puts him in the same company as some serious heavy hitters. 

  Nice to see that I’m not alone here.

Agreed, definitely steep.

The last edition was sub 1K framed which is reasonable.

I follow you on IG and I remember seeing that you’ve been onto him for a hot minute. I missed out on the first edition, just wasn’t paying attention at the time, but figured maybe the new one would be a 30-40% price increase. Not >300%. Not knocking you adding the new one, but would be interested to hear your take on the new price if you’re willing to give it.

If my memory serves me I think I recall seeing medium sized canvas 60x60ish CM for around $7-8k? This maybe 6-9 months ago. I need to go back and look for the emails so don’t quote me on that since it’s just off top my head while I’m out running errands. 

Anyway unfortunately i wont be adding my first Friedrich to the wall this go around. But, if anyone has anything of his they’d like to part with for a reasonable $$$ please LMK.

Forget what I said about the prices earlier.  I just found an updated pdf of his works.  Small work on paper is $10k.  Larger canvases range from $55k to $85k.

I agree, but was a surprised by the prices. I was expecting prices to be maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of what they turned out to be (maybe $25k for the larger canvases) and hoping that there would be some smaller works on paper for $3-5k.  I really had no idea that he was as collectable as he must be.    

His work is amazing but the pieces I like are unfortunately above my pay grade. Oh well.

Congrats, I'm sure the print will be really nice.  The show in Tokyo is going to be incredible, if I had the dry powder I'd absolutely go for one of his larger canvases.
