Dismaland Gift Print Advice, by LJCal on Nov 18, 2020 15:47:47 GMT 1, Hi all
I am wondering if someone can help me. I'm looking at a the Police Riot gift print. I have been told that the print is hand finished, can anyone confirm if this is the case? I'm also not sure of edition size. In terms of provenance I am buying from a reputable dealer who is providing wrist bands from the event and the pay slip of the employee, anything else people typically look for with these?
If anyone would be willing to share some high res pictures and dimensions of an authentic one in private that would also be much appreciated, obviously without pest control I need to carry out extensive checks to authenticate and photos would be a big help.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance. I had one of these. I received a copy of the seller’s photo Id which matched up with a photograph of them working at the event. Also I would ask the dealer if they could even provide you with some paperwork which matches up with the dedicated name if photo Id isn’t possible. I also got a headed letter from the employment agency confirming that the seller had worked there. Every one is apparently hand embellished.I haven’t seen any others but it looked like the eyes on mine were scored through with a black pen. I think approx 50 were given out. Hope the info helps.

Dismaland Gift Print Advice, by Graham H on Nov 18, 2020 17:44:05 GMT 1, Just to add to the comment below.. The comment isnt strictly true, not every one is hand embellished other than a pen mark through the eyes of the person on the slide ( no idea why??!!)..the dedication and the artist signature
You can see this on the one in Tate Ward.. this has no other Hand Embellishment on it other than the pen mark on the eyes ( the auction house appear to have removed the sig and dedicated name on the image )
www.artsy.net/artwork/banksy-police-riot-van-dismaland-gift-print-8
Other hand finishing includes CND signs, love hearts, flowers, Anarchy Signs on the side or front of the van. Some have one addition others have multiple eg a Love Heart and a Flower..but there are just as many non hand finished as there are with hand finished elements.
You can see this from examples below.. the first being hand finished, the second having no hand finishing - I think this has the most hand finishing ive seen.. with mostly only one element rather than three or four on this example ( Anarchy / Flower / CND )
The question then leads to if there is more value for ones with more hand finishing... The jury is out..
Good luck in your search

Dismaland Gift Print Advice, by craigf on Nov 18, 2020 22:51:35 GMT 1, I bought a few back in the day, sourced for friends and kept a couple for myself. The level of hand finishing varies a lot, the line across the eyes I think is printed rather than hand finished (not looked at one for ages so could be wrong). I mainly got payslips as provenance, but have one which was gifted for a different reason, but got appropriate alternative support, plus by then I'd seen quite a few

Both look legit to me but what do I know... maybe take it to pest control for a COA, I’m sure they would authenticate it, good luck 😉

Dismaland Gift Print Advice, by lv90210 on Nov 19, 2020 7:10:33 GMT 1, I have three of these, wrist bands mean nish. Paylips matching the dedication mean everything.
One of my three is the most HF'd one I have ever seen with multiple doodles.
I haven't seen any fakes of these, not saying there isnt any out there just not crossed my path.

Dismaland Gift Print Advice, by Graham H on Nov 19, 2020 10:13:52 GMT 1, Agree.. the wrist band and flouro jacket are just a bonus..as lv90210 says its the payslips matching the name on the print is the only real way
One thing not mentioned is that they should come in the grey gloss frame they were supplied in..which dont appear to be branded and are a bit cheapo.. but thats all part of the dismal experience I suppose..

Not every staff member received a print they needed to work at least a certain amount of hours to get one that’s why there’s not as many of these as people think. Also when these were gifted they came in a white bag with the staff members name on not everyone kept these bags. Most of the paper wristbands you see were the same ones as given to visitors so they can’t really be used as provenance. There was two staff wristbands made of cloth material neither were issued to dismal staff. One is black which I’m sure most people have seen and a much rarer red and gold cloth wristband which is rocking horse shit
And this is how fake news spreads. All it takes is an inaccuracy stated with authority. Especially an inaccuracy like this one, which contains enough truth to make the rest seem extremely plausible.
There were indeed cloth wristbands, worn by many of the permanent crew with positions of greater responsibility.
There were also ‘paper’ crew/visitor wristbands, worn by many other crew members. These were given out each day to people on that day’s roster, which was, generally, checked quite thoroughly to make sure only legitimate crew members and visitors got them. They were emphatically not the same as the ones given to the public. A unique design was distributed each day to ensure the band was only valid on that day, and that people couldn’t easily fake a band for subsequent days. They had to be different to the public wristbands because they allowed access to the crew area (and they were always checked).
I have a fair few of them, from which people can probably figure out how I can be certain of all this.
Also, not all gift prints were handed out in white, named bags. Many were, but others weren’t.
A definitive edition size is almost impossible to determine, but I would imagine it’s a little over the generally touted 50 or so, since an unknowable number were gifted to people who made a valuable contribution to the project without necessarily having an on-site role.

Dismaland Gift Print Advice, by rockbeer on Nov 19, 2020 21:04:25 GMT 1, grrr, I’m 100% correct - there was a restricted crew area with changing rooms etc. Access to it was restricted by wristband and members of the public were not permitted entry. I was on site on numerous days - maybe a dozen or so - and received a unique wristband each day I was there.
There was another crew area which was more tightly restricted to entry with a cloth band.
These are facts. I know, I was there.
Happy to post pics of my bands later but it’s inconvenient right now.

Dismaland Gift Print Advice, by rockbeer on Nov 19, 2020 21:22:33 GMT 1, Well I can tell you this - although obviously there’s no telling some people.
Yes, I was staff. Were you? Yes, I was in the crew changing etc. area every day I worked. Yes, I needed the relevant day’s wristband to get in there, either from outside or inside the exhibition - obviously a different band to the ones given to the public, or everyone and their dog would have been in there looking for ‘free art’ and stealing phones.
Honestly, grrr, you’re funny - and wrong. I was there. I have the bands. Just let it go.
Or do you think staff access was controlled by mouse ears? That would show just how much you know.
Now I’ve already said more than I intended, so people can make up their own minds between my first hand experience and your unsupported assertions.

Dismaland Gift Print Advice, by rockbeer on Nov 24, 2020 10:11:01 GMT 1, No, I don't really have time for this nonsense either – though who needs to dop the growing up is debatable. Aggression is of course a common response when backed into a corner, but it's still a disappointing and dispiriting response.
I can't see any point in posting pictures of my bands. It wouldn't matter what bands I posted, you'd say they were the same as the ones given to the public and how could I prove otherwise?
Besides, pictures of staff bands are already all over the internet. Here for example: www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/official-dismaland-ultimate-bundle-1784144071
and here: www.auctionzip.com/auction-lot/STAFF-WRISTBANDS:_0AF4B1E806/
and here: www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/dismaland-program-staff-wristbands-1784075425
I have around a dozen bands, some like the ones in the above pictures, some different. But I don't imagine you'll be convinced. I don't imagine anything will convince you – though your refusal to discuss the inner door is revealing. You can't deny the door existed, because everyone knows it did. Therefore, either access had to be managed somehow or it would have been a free for all. Everyone knows this. So... access was either managed by wristband or by some other method. I can see your dilemma. If you acknowledge it was by wristband then you have to accept that staff wristbands were different to the public ones. But if you deny access was by wristband then you have to offer some plausible alternative which everyone knows didn't exist.
I'll leave you to puzzle that one out. I'm out of here.
No, I don't really have time for this nonsense either – though who needs to dop the growing up is debatable. Here for example: www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/official-dismaland-ultimate-bundle-1784144071and here: www.auctionzip.com/auction-lot/STAFF-WRISTBANDS:_0AF4B1E806/and here: www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/dismaland-program-staff-wristbands-1784075425I have around a dozen bands, some like the ones in the above pictures, some different. All those paper wristbands are the same as the ones given to visitors lots of people on this forum would of visited dismaland and received paper wristbands the same as this. The only two wristbands which were specifically for staff were the two cloth ones in your first image the black one and the red and gold one which I mentioned in an earlier post. Do you know what the red and gold one was for? The only reason I can think that you would be so desperate to say the paper wristbands were for staff only is if in the past you had bought a gift print and were trying to use these as a method of authenticity? i had a gold one .. staff band got in to exhibit no queuing free food ect few other things 😬 edit not sure about food remember eating pizza lots ... don’t think i needed band cockney charm go’s a long way ....
