The OPs doesn't appear to be from the original run.
Are you certain they were all done that way?

Maybe my eyes are deceiving me but that looks like white paint, to me anyway.

Most of them are that way (primer white) but there appear to be a few with white paint over and above the primer.
However, I haven't found any with white paint as thick as the OPs which may be the key here.

100% agree. From the Sotherbys one it's clear it's a primed canvas with the red applied first leaving a white monkey silhouette then the black applied to add the detail.
You can see in this close up that the black doesn't quite line up with the white, which also indicates that the black is the top layer. Also down by the hand you can see where the black overlaps the red by a few mm's giving a darker edge.

I thought it was a genuine comment as there is a real point to it. Mould is virtually impossible to clean as it becomes integrated with the fibres of the canvas. But you'd hope it can be stabilised. I'm not sure it's as simple as just wiping it off.
