General Framing Costs, by ap0 on Nov 7, 2020 19:20:15 GMT 1, Hi All,
I thought it would be useful to have a post with general costs for framing. I know they depend on where you are and other factors but these would be general costs, maybe you can talk about your experience in your country. If we consider three sizes: small (around 30 x 30 cm), Medium (around 60 x 60 cm) and big (around 100 x 100 cm). How much would you think would be the minimum cost to frame these sizes to the highest standards?
Thanks!

18 x 24 with Museum glass I'm looking at 300 to 400 USD

For a good frame to preservation standards by a good quality framer. But add another 50% for an excellent framer.

General Framing Costs, by cest on Nov 7, 2020 21:06:13 GMT 1, I got my JR Hold Up framed recently - 60x40, and it was ยฃ130 with uv protection (90% I think) glass. I often read the framing costs on here and am surprised at how expensive they are There are also lots of variables on the type of wood, matting vs floating, type of glass, etc. The ornate frames I used on some of my prefab77 pieces retail for $100/ft.
Even in a 10k + artwork, there are too many good options for 20 bucks a foot

General Framing Costs, by irl1 on Nov 25, 2020 0:36:46 GMT 1, Do people have any examples of what they got framed and the cost ? Are a lot of people spending $500 on framing for a $500 print ? They prefer to spend it on seller fees

Iโve done exactly that before. Itโs not only just about the monetary value of a piece but how itโs displayed and enjoyed.
An incredible looking $125 print you wanted enough to wait for the drop and then clicked furiously to make sure they didnโt sell out first is going to suck in a $12 poster frame from Walmart.
Frame it up proper. Hang it. Enjoy it. Share it. Tell stories about it. Screw what anyone else thinks or says.

This.
130ยฃ seems unlikely to cover true conservation materials + labor involved in building a high end frame + mounting the print
I would think a high end framer would need to charge 3-4 times that in order to be profitable (of course this also depends on where he is located)
would be interesting to see a few pics of said frame. Close up of corners, back etc...can sometimes give a good Indication on what type of work was carried out

Harland ยฃ18k print in a ยฃ800/900 (?) framing job
Harland ยฃ30 print in a ยฃ350/450 (?) framing job
Both have been framed to Tru-Vue Museum standard. Roughly the same size but the difference in pricing is one framer I use 10 times a year and receive 30% discounts while the other is reportedly the best in the business and charges accordingly.
Pay what you can afford but the difference in glass quality and transparency is amazing.

General Framing Costs, by JAlternatiรณn on Nov 25, 2020 10:42:46 GMT 1, Mine seem cheaper than most on here, maybe because of using the same framer in a more regional area (and possibly numbers quoted are in $).
Plainish frame 86cm square with tru vue museum glass and full museum conservation board/mounting etc was ยฃ400. It;s usually the glass that bumps it up for me, but i do like plain frames

General Framing Costs, by charliec2701 on Nov 25, 2020 11:01:29 GMT 1, Any reason not to use a made to measure internet job? Other than quality/transparency. Assuming I use conservation standard mount and backing board. Because youโll never truly see the colour of the board, mat, frame against the artwork itself. If we take white for an example, there are numerous shades of white. How can you accurately measure spacing, cropping, frame choice etc etc without getting up close and seeing first hand? Finally should you go the route of internet framing and send your dream piece away for framing, how upset would you be if itโs returned damaged in the post ?? I doubt the framers would go to the expense of protecting it like this Pejac recently sold ? And if they are you may as well save the crating and shipping costs by visiting a local professional framing shop:)

General Framing Costs, by John The Badgers on Nov 25, 2020 11:48:13 GMT 1, I'm with Romulus, interesting reading above.
Coincidentally, have framed up some nice postcards myself recently, have to pay my latest Invoice at lunchtime.
I have used Brampton Framing in the UK, they are able to supply a cut to size mount, backing (all conservational standard), and Museum glass for my postcards, all for circa ยฃ20-ยฃ25. Just use a 'standard' frame off eBay/Department store, and fit the bits to it. Here my Kate Moss post card I did recently -
As to my other prints, have always used Mister Frame Man who has always been spot on. Does vary quite a lot, and difficult to standardise prices, depends on the glass (Museum quite a premium), and perhaps other specifications you ask for.

General Framing Costs, by avec art on Nov 25, 2020 12:38:53 GMT 1, I've made an order of materials from Brampton, this my first order from them. I'm trying to frame a Banksy sticker. My plan is to float mount it, surrounded by white mount. The frame is white as I feel a black frame here will distract from the black in the sticker. I the glass ordered is Tru vue.
When the gear turns up I'll post pics.

General Framing Costs, by churchwood on Nov 25, 2020 12:54:34 GMT 1, Having to be a bit more careful at the moment and recently used an online framer for some sheets of cut to size UV acrylic 2mm (or 3mm) to replace the stock perspex in some off the shelf frames.
used the same site to frame these chaps this week. Made to measure frames and double mounts with UV acrylic. I have used photo corners and then taped them to the mount with some decent framing tape so in theory the prints can be removed easily as they aren't taped anywhere to the mount
okay it's nowhere near the quality and finish that I would get from dropping them to the framers but they are a fun set and all in it cost around ยฃ80 for all three frames.

Good points!
Though I order the bits and put it in the frame myself. The thought of sending prints off in the post gives me the shivers.

General Framing Costs, by avec art on Dec 4, 2020 15:34:08 GMT 1, My order from Brampton arrived John The Badgers and I'm really pleased with them. All my individual pieces arrived very well packaged, and also of a very good quality, good corners and quality of materials etc.
I was also pleased with the colours I eventually went for (going for white over black). I'll definitely use them again and wouldn't say that glibly.
My only downside, which is small, is that I don't have one of those tru-vue stickers you get with tru-vue glass. The reason why I suppose is because I did the framing myself, I only ordered the parts to do so.
Here is it, Petrol Head (round version). All acid free and non invasive as mylar corners used.

General Framing Costs, by startimeash on Dec 4, 2020 16:03:16 GMT 1, Have always framed everything myself - built a huge 140 x 120 frame for a Mr. Jago recovered work on plywood for less than ยฃ200. No glass involved there, though. Wouldn't say my framing is anywhere near professional level, but I enjoy doing it myself, and the results are good enough for me. All the frames here are mine except the Fridriks (centre right top)
