Won't the buyers have to pay a Buyer's Premium (percentage of sale price) on top of their bid? If so it might not be such a low price when it's all added up.

when its sold its sold (don't know how much of a problem nonpaying bidders are on the bay). Some people don't trust ebay I think. They do all the hard work so its pretty easy.
those are just some reasons, not saying that's its just the best way of doing things....

Mainly because ordinarily you'd expect to see far higher sale prices at sotheby's, which off-set the costs.
We're seeing a correction in prices, which will hopefully filter back down through the gallery system and to Ebay.
