Banksy funds Refugee Rescue boat, by Coach on Aug 29, 2020 18:28:05 GMT 1, So Stavi and Rouencathedral whats the intent of your posts? I mean they come off a bit envious ina way where it seems liek you have done way more and failed to get the recognition you so dutifully deserve Ever had a family member die at sea? Any immigrants in your family or were you born into entitlement? Never in need always able to help and feed those in need? I just dont understand the douchebagness in your comments. I guess you have done SOOOOOOOO much more to help others in what you call your life that what Mr B does is minimal? So because the boat banksy bough and funds gets more attention than the hundreds of other boats that have been doing it for years ( which then brings more attention to the actual issue and not the vessel) we should say F*CK BANKSY? Like for real for real for real wtf you doing here? You related to trump too? because creating division seems like your main intent? Go tell all the families of those that died on the boat that was trying to rescue them that they shoudl hire you to sue an unknown unnamed street artist who's only intent was to help bring to light the attention and urgency it deserves? You should change your name bevause after doing a google search i learned: Stavi: a half-erection a man gets when looking at an attractive girl with the intent to have sex; or while reading an issue of Good Housekeeping. Related to the term "Chubby," but more apt to normal conversation. "Michelle is bending over, it's really giving me a stavi." Also Coach, the truck filled with kids is just as important but explain why in the banksy thread and not in its own thread? is bashing banksy a trending topic on the forum?
You need to double check who posted about the truck, my friend.

Banksy funds Refugee Rescue boat, by Lunch Special on Aug 29, 2020 18:28:40 GMT 1, Yes, it is gross, but who are the gross ones? Ding ding ding. Banksy isn’t an artist anymore. And that’s fine. The fault of his is now people view everything he does as art and that’s the problem. He’s at fault for that. He needs to cease being an artist and he needs to state that. But he won’t. And that’s my issue. So your issue is he's not an artist but you're commenting on a thread and a forum dedicated to a Banksys art?
Im lost but why are you here again? oh i know looking for a good flip..... aaahhhh bash banksy in hopes of a price drop..... Long live the project champion crews....

Banksy funds Refugee Rescue boat, by Rouen Cathedral on Aug 29, 2020 18:38:40 GMT 1, It is a shame that what should have been a good thread has been derailed. I suspect that that was the intention. For any part that I played in that, I apologise. Hopefully we can get back on track. For those of us who are concerned by the actions of our governments at this time regarding this crisis, a good friend of mine made a very good suggestion: we should all write to our MEP’s to lobby them to fulfil their legal obligations. I do hope he doesn’t mind me repeating the suggestion here; I suspect not.
That first paragraph is #woke
Touché!

Is Banksy a philanthropist?
Like much of society these days it appears you don’t think words actually have definitions.

Without a doubt Banksy is putting his brand/art/PRmachine all over this. The thing is I don’t see it helping his “brand”. If anything I see this as a real risk to the “brand”. There are countless ways for this to go horribly wrong. Nevertheless awareness is being raised and there are people alive now who might have died if that boat wasn’t there. If the thing that sickens you the most about this is a mediocre stencil and pink paint, then that says a lot more about you than It does anyone else.

Banksy buys boat which helps save human life. Any cynicism should be left at the door. Incredible gesture. The man has literally helped save life’s today. I’ve ordered a curry. Perspective is needed.

Banksy funds Refugee Rescue boat, by mojo on Aug 29, 2020 19:06:57 GMT 1, The Italian coastguard has answered a distress call from a rescue boat financed by the British street artist Banksy and taken charge of 49 migrants in most need of help, it has said.
The boat had become stranded at sea after the crew helped 130 migrants, with the ship’s leaders saying that requests for help from European authorities had been ignored.
The vessel, named Louise Michel after a French feminist anarchist, set off in secrecy on 18 August from the Spanish seaport of Burriana, near Valencia, and went to the central Mediterranean, where, on Thursday, it rescued 89 people including 14 women and four children. It had been safeguarding more than 200 people off Libya’s coast.
On Friday, the crew of European activists responded to a mayday call by Moonbird, an aircraft that monitors migrants’ boat in danger in the central Mediterranean, which had spotted a dinghy that was not moving and was taking in water.
“Louise Michel proceeded at full speed,” a ship spokesperson said. “We handed out life vests to 130 people to secure the situation.”
The rubber dinghy is located in the Maltese search and rescue zone, dangerously overcrowded and taking in water, with several on board suffering from fuel burns and injuries, after having spent several days at sea. When the Louise Michel made contact, there was also a dead body on board the vessel, which the coastguard has now removed.
On Saturday, Banksy posted a short video on his personal Instagram account and accompanied by a comment: “Like most people who make it in the art world, I bought a yacht, to cruise the Med.
“It’s a French navy vessel we converted into a lifeboat because EU authorities deliberately ignore distress calls from ‘non-Europeans’.” The video ends with the words All Black Lives Matter.
The passengers had previously contacted the Alarm Phone, an emergency hotline assisting refugees at sea, and requested immediate rescue. Activists of Alarm Phone and Moonbird alerted European authorities to the boat in distress.
The crew alleged that neither the Maltese nor the Italian authorities had reacted adequately.
The Louise Michel is safeguarding the 130 passengers as the ship is already carrying 89 migrants and can accommodate a maximum of 120 passengers on board. The ship has transferred dozens of other migrants on board (the most vulnerable) and deployed life rafts for the others as they await assistance.
The crew said on Twitter: “We are unable to safely move and nobody is coming to our aid. The people rescued have experienced extreme trauma. We need immediate assistance.”
The activists stated that the people had been left alone in a European search and rescue zone and warned: “Don’t let it become a body count. Do your job. Rescue them.”
Lea Reisner, head of operations for the Louise Michel, said: “The people have sat in a mix of salt water and fuel for days.” She accused European states of not doing their job, saying: “They deny responsibility while we are trying to keep everyone alive … We need immediate assistance.”
Neeske Beckmann, of the Moonbird, said: “We were shocked when we saw the rubber boat – it was incredibly overcrowded and people on board were trying to shuffle water out of the boat with their bare hands.
“We knew this was a grave emergency situation and decided to send out a mayday relay to all authorities and actors in the vicinity. Responsible European authorities failed to react to our distress call and only the Louise Michel responded to this serious distress case.”
Painted bright pink and displaying a Banksy artwork depicting a girl in a life vest holding a heart-shaped safety buoy, the Louise Michel sails under a German flag. The 31-metre motor yacht, formerly owned by French customs authorities, is smaller but considerably faster than other NGO rescue vessels.
Claire Faggianelli, an activist who prepared the Louise Michel for its first mission, saw the project as a wake-up call for Europe. “We really want to try to awaken the consciousness of Europe and say: ‘Look, we have been yelling at you for years now. There is something that shouldn’t be happening at the very borders of Europe, and you close your eyes to it. Wake up!’” she said.
So far in 2020, more than 500 refugees and migrants are known to have died in the Mediterranean sea, and the real number is estimated to be considerably higher.
On Wednesday, 45 people – including five children – died when the engine on their boat exploded off Libya, in the country’s deadliest shipwreck this year, the UN said. More than 19,500 migrants have survived the Mediterranean crossing along the central maritime route this year and reached Italy or Malta.

Banksy funds Refugee Rescue boat, by mrizzle on Aug 29, 2020 19:33:37 GMT 1, That’s the whole point. Is this art? Is Banksy an artist? Is this humanitarian aid? Is Banksy a philanthropist? Like much of society these days it appears you don’t think words actually have definitions. Without a doubt Banksy is putting his brand/art/PRmachine all over this. The thing is I don’t see it helping his “brand”. If anything I see this as a real risk to the “brand”. There are countless ways for this to go horribly wrong. Nevertheless awareness is being raised and there are people alive now who might have died if that boat wasn’t there. If the thing that sickens you the most about this is a mediocre stencil and pink paint, then that says a lot more about you than It does anyone else.
I really don’t understand this cynical view at all. Banksy has funded a boat to save more lives and, in doing so, has increased the spotlight/further highlighted a global humanitarian crisis. This is in no way “branding”. In my opinion this has absolutely nothing to do with a “brand” but his name will always bring about huge media attention and, correspondingly, will increase global pressure on nations to respond. I don’t understand how anyone can view this as anything but a truly remarkable humanitarian gesture.
Were you as cynical when he opened up the Walled Off Hotel highlighting the situation of those living in (occupied) Palestine? Were you enraged when he painted Entitled Mediterranean Sea View (which appears to have been the source of funding for this boat)? How about the Love Welcomes welcome mats which is highlighting the troubles of those living in refugee camps and enabling them to earn a wage?
I usually steer away from conflict here but some of the comments in this thread are both disturbing and wholly depressing.

They are often not proper lifejackets that are used. Even if they were they may not be safe as they have been worn and possibly damaged.
Explanation on the fake jackets is here: shop.grossdomesticproduct.com/collections/home2/products/banksy-welcome-mat

Banksy funds Refugee Rescue boat, by ABC on Aug 29, 2020 21:25:31 GMT 1, Don't agree with this at all. Think he needs to stick to other ways of raising profile.
And before everyone starts....I spent 6 months amongst the migrant crisis in Turkey/Greece help rescuing pregnant women and chidren from sinking boats, rafts and anything the migrants tried to cross in. It wasn't a nice experience and very much different from someone "reading the news" and debating on what they know. Certainly gave me a "front line" insight as oppose to a "virtual" online i know what I'm talking about perspective.

Banksy funds Refugee Rescue boat, by Rouen Cathedral on Aug 29, 2020 21:34:49 GMT 1, Without a doubt Banksy is putting his brand/art/PRmachine all over this.
I actually was very questioning about the Walled Off. Go back and look in my archive.
It’s the same comment and the same struggle well viewing the ‘work’.
I don’t think Banksy can be an artist and a philanthropist and muddy the lines. It harms the two sides in my opinion.

Banksy funds Refugee Rescue boat, by carly on Aug 29, 2020 21:36:36 GMT 1, That’s the whole point. Is this art? Is Banksy an artist? Is this humanitarian aid? Is Banksy a philanthropist? Like much of society these days it appears you don’t think words actually have definitions. Without a doubt Banksy is putting his brand/art/PRmachine all over this. There’s no doubt this was meant with good intentions. However I think this has the potential to be a disaster. God forbid anything happens to the rescue boat with that many people on board I think banksy would come under a huge amount of fire. On the point of the GWB painted on the boat I think it wasn’t needed imagine if McDonald’s donated a boat with there emblem on it I think there would be an outcry of poor taste. I support Banksy but I think this wasn’t fully thought through.

Agree, Its not about who's already on the boat though, it's the fact that if there is a single ounce of hope for the migrants, they will attempt the crossing. Unfortunately that boat will provide hope but will fuel the problem and certainly not help the crisis.

Ah but I didn’t quote you in my comment.
Why don’t you think he can be both? To quote Pablo Picasso (and you’re no doubt familiar with ‘Guernica’), “Painting is not made to decorate apartments; it is an offensive and defensive instrument of war against the enemy.”

Ah but I didn’t quote you in my comment. Why don’t you think he can be both? Picasso is a perfect example of an artist who did both with his pairing of Guernica. To quote the man himself, “Painting is not made to decorate apartments; it is an offensive and defensive instrument of war against the enemy.”
Painting Guernica is completely different.
With recent ‘works’ Banksy has activity been a participant (at least in name) on the front of line, on the streets, etc etc. he’s blurred the line of And artist creating art making a political statement Or humanitarian awareness and an artist actively participating in a political statement or humanitarian actions. To me that blurring isn’t a good thing. It dilutes and cheapens the political/humanitarian point while also creating something I’m not sure one in good will can call art.
I 100% believe Banksys goal is to blur this line and that’s my point. I think it’s a major failure.
That’s why it’s important to understand the reality of it. Did Banksy buy a boat, paint it give it to a legit entity/ program that does this daily (with no recognition) and now will swoop out and not be involved? Is that his connection? Is he actively engaged in the efforts, going to continue to fund? Is his goal to fund it, put his name on it, get it some attention and then move on to the next? Like what’s the goal?
