Banksy + Clown Skateboards, by Fairxat on Dec 14, 2021 10:48:27 GMT 1, This print and deck set is driving funds for In Action details below: www.clownskateboards.com/inactionWe have priced it to raise as much money for the cause as possible. Although some don’t agree with the pricing, we have had an overwhelming response and are delighted with the feedback of both Clown Skateboard fans and collectors of Urban art. Unfortunately we have also had some abuse from a very small group of people that think it’s acceptable to slander Clowns good work and be rude to our staff. As the main goal for the release is to help underprivileged kids we have deleted hateful comments on our Instagram page. Thank you so much to everyone who has emailed in. we are working through the emails as we speak and should get back to everyone today, as you can imagine it may take a while with the amount we have received. Well done UAA, Online abuse - new lows all the time. lol Coming from someone with good form on the bristol protest thread and quite a few other threads with abuse

Banksy + Clown Skateboards, by 7star on Dec 14, 2021 11:21:27 GMT 1, If the cash is going to help kids get into skating then thats obviously a great cause
But if the artist didn't authorise the skate rerelease or the print then it's still an utter liberty
Stowe nothing to feel proud of here, you've just got a load of idiots who don't understand the art market to waste 8k on something that'll end up on ebay for a couple of grand when they realise it wasn't an official release or even authorised

Banksy + Clown Skateboards, by Happy Shopper on Dec 14, 2021 11:38:49 GMT 1, Authorized by who? On this thread someone posted pest controls response that the re-releases of the clown image was not authorized, just around in circles. if a company / skate shop has an artist do a logo or both parties agree on the logo for said company / skate shop and the artist is cool and gives or do whatever they do, the question is: A does the owner of the shop and logo have full usage rights? I'd assume Banksy designed the logo to put on their products, but not become the product.
If I were Banksy I think I'd be a bit annoyed at them releasing the logo as a print (and across 3 decks). It crosses the line into looking like an authorised Banksy artwork, rather than just logo on a T-shirt or skateboard.
I believe the artist generally retains the copyright for this type of usage... but it's not always clear.

Banksy + Clown Skateboards, by dp on Dec 14, 2021 11:50:33 GMT 1, Have Clown made any statement about the use of their business logo? text from Clown email sent out today:
The great thing about doing what we do - apart from loving it - is that we raise money for things to make a difference. This year Ludo, Adam Neate, you and the shops have helped that along, but we can't stop now, we are just getting warmed up on ‘IN ACTION.
The plans for 2022 on ‘IN ACTION’ are afoot and we want next year to have a greater impact than 2021. We are preparing a full end of year summary so you can see the great works that have been done with YOUR backing, In Action has allowed us to put some happy faces in this world both home and abroad, something we can all do with at the moment.
The Clown Skateboards community movement ‘IN ACTION’ is about the act of making a practical commitment, seeing it through and realising the outcomes from our actions. This is something that does not belong to us but belongs to all of us who feel the same and want to partner with Clown to make positive actions.
Now read on.
Clown Skateboards and Stowe Gallery are great friends, having worked and drunk in the same urban art circles for a good few years now. We had both been talking about working together on something, but life just got in the way. Two things for sure: 1. it had to reflect both our worlds - skate and art and 2. as both parties are strong believers in giving back, THAT had to play a major part. Clown has a Community Interest Company (Clown In Action) which was one of the key drivers behind Jeff and Vikas bringing Clown back in 2020 and therefore the cause that would benefit was a no-brainer
Clown has been working with artists from their very inception: Mau Mau, Adam Neate, Jock and one or two others you might have heard of...Just how did Clown get Banksy to do their logo? BANKSY was just about to explode after he, Jeff Boardman and Vikas Malik came together to create a street party to showcase his work for the very first time in London with the now legendary “Rivington Street Exhibition” and the release of the first little black book “Banging My Head Against A Brick Wall”. After the show Jeff and Vikas - who had been looking to start their own movement that incorporated their worlds of Skateboarding, Art and Music - asked BANKSY to create the Clown logo and designs for the first 2 boards. You can read more here
The guys at Stowe Gallery have been working with a ton of other artists in the Urban art world for many years. And as they have also moved in the same circles as the main man himself, it was a simple choice as to whom we would choose to release the first ever Clown Original with.
Stowe's whole business is obviously art, so our mutual interests of art, skateboarding and beer had to come together eventually.
And you can see the fruits of that love-in on the 17:12:21

Absolutely ruined any respect they once had
Such a p take to release a print
You're telling me that people that don't get how he works won't mistake it for an official release
Joke

Banksy + Clown Skateboards, by 7star on Dec 14, 2021 12:26:49 GMT 1, And Stowe
It doesn't matter where the cash is going ......
The point is that people who don't under stand his market will think it's authorised or an official release
By releasing a print you're making it real easy for a beginner or someone lacking knowledge to mistake it for being part of his official Canon
And I think that's what you are both relying on in order to sell them

Banksy + Clown Skateboards, by 7star on Dec 14, 2021 13:36:15 GMT 1, Posters would be fine, they don't cost 8k and therefore no one will lose more than 20 quid max but when you start charging 8k for something that isn't authorised or an official release, people are going to lose a lot more by maybe thinking it's official
It's a utter p take

So it’s probably safe to assume that the COA won’t be a Pest Control one. Wonder who gets the ARR? 🤔

People care about those without the money who might put themselves in debt to purchase.
Do you know if it’s all the profit or all the proceeds to charity?

Banksy + Clown Skateboards, by FЯ on Dec 14, 2021 14:00:09 GMT 1, if you don't have the money, then don't spend £8k on skateboards thats not for you to decide, people are adults. Nowhere does it say its a banksy print.
i am nothing to do with clown nor own any clown stuff, but i dont get the (what is essentially) hounding out of malice. Its christmas soon, give it a rest. this years been annoying enough in reality without reading it as well.
No one was bothered when mason storm was selling banksy work. you cant have double standards like this just because you cant afford to buy it or resell it.

Banksy + Clown Skateboards, by 7star on Dec 14, 2021 14:23:16 GMT 1, Haha I've got the cash trust me but the difference is between me and maybe someone else
I know the difference between something official and worth collecting and something that's worthless
Nothing about money or having or not having it but protecting people from wasting 8k
It's 100% not an issue if someone spends it knowing they won't get their money back but you can't guarantee everyone will know that

Banksy + Clown Skateboards, by iamzero on Dec 14, 2021 18:11:29 GMT 1, For what it’s worth this is the response I had when I sent a message to PC asking for their position on the previous skateboard release. What I find strange is the high pricing compared to other authorised items other than that I quite like the decks.
There is no agreement in place for these images to be reproduced or sold, they aren't eligible for authentication of any sort.
Many thanks

So what do we have?
we have a pic of something banksy did 20 odd years back that he has distanced himself from.
Another business has 'sort of' permission to use. Marchant at Stowe has decided he would like a wicked holiday somewhere hot away from it all and he would like 12 people to pay for it for him.
For this to happen, He spins it as A/ Banksy B/small run, limited availability C/ Expensive (only the lucky few can own it
Costs for this would be approx £300 for the 3 decks, and say £200 for the print. so £500 all in, sell at £8k gives around £90k profit for the special edition
Potential resale would be around £2k, so all the lucky buyers get to contribute quite a chunk of their after tax Money to Steve
I guess Clown will get a cut of this too, so seems only fair we help him out and buy it

Or indeed if the primary motivation for releasing them is to maximise the money being raised for the chosen (no doubt worthy) cause then why not reduce the pricing and substantially increase the edition size. I do think that the price of this release is what has raised a lot of eyebrows (including my own) and, though there will likely always be two schools of thought on the use of the image, I think they’d sell these by the truckload if the edition size (and price) was better judged.
