Dondi White, born Donald Joseph White in 1961, is one of the true street art legends of the original New York graffiti scene, often considered as one of the most influential graffiti writers in the scene. Dondi developed his unique and bold style of graffiti writing in the 1970’s, which saw him using the tags NACO and DONDI. 1977 saw him join the TOP crew (The Odd Partners) before starting his own graffiti crew in 1978, CIA (Crazy Inside Artists), which included graffiti artists Crash, Doc, Rasta and Duro. Dondi was quite unique in his approach to graffiti writing, often planning in great detail the pieces he was going to go and paint out in the street, practicing several times in sketch books before creating the final piece. Although Dondi was capable of producing the classic wildstyle form of graffiti writing, he preferred and developed his original large block style, which has remained influential to this day, allowing people to be able to read the text and also enabled Dondi to create patterns within the letters. 1980 saw Dondi become involved with the Esses Studio project, aimed at preserving subway art, during which he started to produce artworks on canvas, before becoming associated with the Soul Artists crew, formed by Marc André Edmonds aka ALI. The association with Soul Artists saw Dondi rubbing shoulders with graffiti artists such as Futura 2000, Keith Haring, Eric Haze, Lee Quiñones, Zephyr and Jean-Michel Basquiat. Later artworks saw Dondi moving away from street graffiti to produce collages and drawings. Unfortunately, Dondi White passed away from AIDS in New York, 1998, aged just 37. Catch up with our street art legends series by reading Street Art Legends: The Best of Basquiat Art and Street Art Legends: King Robbo Graffiti, about the work of King Robbo.

Dondi 🇺🇸 New York Graffiti • Donald Joseph White, by Petrusino on Nov 19, 2015 11:29:11 GMT 1, Custom Metal Editions Created In Detroit By Legendary Photographer Martha Cooper.
New York City (1980) -- Dondi painting in New Lots Subway Yard – Cooper says this particular photograph of Dondi shows an important milestone. It was when she was allowed for the very first time to go to the subway yards with a group of graffiti artists. "Until then I had not really understood how they had been able to paint such large pieces -- often covering an entire subway car -- in one night. Or how they could climb up to the top of the train and paint. This was the first time that I finally understood so much more." edition.cnn.com/2015/09/07/arts/martha-cooper-photography-interview/
"A top-to-bottom is a piece on a train that covers the whole train car on one side including the windows and doors"
This 1xRUN release is a rarely seen image of the graffiti king Dondi painting a top to bottom whole car in Brooklyn. Each edition is printed is on satin white aluminum and bolted to heavy duty scrap aluminum, ready to hang.
Archival Pigment Print On .012” Satin White Aluminum Mounted To Heavy Duty Scrap Steel Backing.

Classic image, but I don't really like the metal panel and it seems a bit expensive!!

ABOUT DONDI: Dondi White (American, born April 7, 1961–died October 2, 1998) was a Graffiti artist best known for his dynamic lettering and stick figures. Born in New York, he began his career in the early 1970s, as part of the group of Graffiti artists known as The Odd Partners, who worked primarily on the M, J, and LL subway lines during the 1970s. In 1977, White formed his own group, known as CIA, and established his reputation as one of the most stylistically innovative and influential Graffiti artists of his generation. The photographer Martha Cooper (American, b.1943) documented how White painted a subway car in her series Children of the Grace (1979), which also appeared in the book Subway Art, published in 1984. In 1980, White took part in the Esses Studio project, which was funded by the art patron Sam Esses, and sought to preserve subway art that was being systematically removed by the MTA. At this time, White began to work on canvas, and became associated with a group of artists working in the East Village, including Futura 2000 (Lenny McGurr) (American, b.1955), Keith Haring (American, 1958–1990), and Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960–1988). White’s work on canvas reiterates the lettering, symbolic icons, and stick figures that were his signature marks on the streets. His later work in the 1990s included colleges that juxtaposed his pencil drawings with blueprints of the subway system. His work has been exhibited at the Groninger Museum in the Netherlands, the Fun Gallery in New York, and the Musée des Monuments Français in Paris.

Dondi 🇺🇸 New York Graffiti • Donald Joseph White, by lukas01 on Apr 12, 2023 7:57:22 GMT 1, He also worked together with Lin Felton (QUIK) and Richard Mirando (SEEN). I think both artists keep good memories of it. They are all part of the same artistic ferment. Their art greatly influenced the style of the artists of the following years. Andy Warhol was fascinated by New York's tagged trains. Many of those trains... bore the signature of Dondi... Quik... Seen... Lady Pink... Blade... etc... .
Great Artists, who have transmitted innovative styles and who, in some cases, we can still see at work in various subway lines.
Some of them, still in business, "give away" the possibility of having a piece of history at home.

Dondi 🇺🇸 New York Graffiti • Donald Joseph White, by Lroy on Apr 12, 2023 8:22:11 GMT 1, Just to tell you that Beyond The Streets made available a book about The New York City Rap Tour from Janet Beckman , kinda festival where I was in 1982 in Paris Bataclan ! I did not know then that I would see live legends of Hip Hop, rap and Graffitis ! The Bataclan was a bit empty for this international event but the show was great !
Futura and Fab 5 Freddy dedicated me then my red Jacket with a big marker, in the back ! ( I lost it since this time, I was 22 )
