Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by put the kettle on on Jun 12, 2020 20:40:37 GMT 1, I always find it weird when people say things like "Seasonal flu kills more each year" or "cancer kills more" etc, etc; we have seasonal flu, cancer, etc AND now also Covid-19. It's not a one-in-one-out kind of thing. And we're fighting for our lives (and also apparently livelihoods) against all of those things. its very rare to become seriously ill with covid do you not think?

Cancer kills more Now changed to cancer kills more As lack of cancer treatment Due to covid 19 closing cancer treatment wards

Statistically yes, but I'm still not in a rush to get back out to my door knob licking. Especially as, while I might fancy my chances, we don't know the long-term effects the virus has on our bodies. Plus I don't want to spread it to some poor nanna. I think we were lucky that it wasn't more deadly, but that'll be little comfort to the dead and dying. Plus, Covid-19 will have a knock-on effect with cancer treatments, mental health and other conditions, that'll be unfortunate for a long time to come. It's complicated. I'm getting drunk. x

On the plus side, targeted ads seem to still be working well.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Javier on Jun 14, 2020 9:38:54 GMT 1, Hi people Just to make you feel a bit optimistic. Lockdown measures are having (good) results. Even though not everyone follows the rules. My region, Galicia, in the northwest of Spain, will be the first to enter (starting tomorrow) in the “new normality”. In the last week, just 11 new infected in a 2.7 million population region. Anyway, what this normality means: - Masks if you can’t keep 1,5 m security distance - Lots of hand washing - Ventilation in closed spaces - You must be in any kind of shop or similar just the time you need to make your purchase - Not touching anything that can be touched by others without being disinfected - Self service places: avoid direct manipulation by costumers (strange way of self service) - workplaces: everybody must have his own tools - Avoid lifts - Bathroom: 50% of capacity, maximum 1 person in 4 sqm - Burials: max 70 people in open space. 30 in closed ones - Churches: max 75% capacity. No touching or kissing religious objects - Weddings: max 250 in open air, 150 in closed places - Retail: max 75% capacity - Commercial centers: max 50% capacity - Street markets: 75% - Bars and restaurants: open air up to 80% - CULTURE: UP TO 75% CAPACITY (I guess this includes exhibitions) And still 14 more points. And it will be like this till there is a vaccine So, even this is “back to normal”, we can think that we are not too far from where we were before covid And I’m sending an optimistic message to all of you who live in countries who have been hit hard like mine. With all our effort we will go back to a life, not exactly as before, but close enough to feel free again until this is all over

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by ak1 on Jun 14, 2020 15:32:38 GMT 1, It might be good results in Spain at the moment, but here there are ads for thousands of cheap flights starting in July to Spain, Italy etc. Cant see much social distancing happening when people are in 'holiday mode'. Lets see if we're back to square one come September.

Spain desperately wants the tourism industry open with over 200 million euro raised in tourist taxes alone plus the hundreds of millions Of financial spending that tourists pump into the local economy
all governments need the public support behind them it is easy to manipulate visual charts to display pleasing figures to support their agenda And gain the support of the public
The charts only represent the type of data used which in many cases has proved not to be an accurate representation Of the true infections and death related to covid 19 and the data proved to be bias .
All advice we the public have previously been given is now disregarded as the whole world assumed a vaccine would be here in months and now the realisation of the situation will not end in the short term it is financially infeasible to maintain the current guidance which is impacting the economy hence governments rewording and amending past documents And overruling past guidance to suit their agendas
With tourist routes to open , protests in place , flu emergence in October , mass deaths will occur around November if no advance in a vaccine or medicines

Right. Tourism is vital for Spain. So there is a plan whose implementation will start next week, and there will be coming to Mallorca several thousands of Germans. There are lots of measures taken to receive them, and it will be the way to know if that measures are correct. Both for Spanish people and for tourists. Also tour operators are coming to check that measures taken, so they know if they can send people safely. If this plan works, many people will copy it
And if people from other countries don’t take measures when they are on holidays in Spain... should it be expected that they take measures when they are on holidays at home? Sure not either. The most important thing to avoid spreading is taking measures, and making people take them too

There will be no vaccine ready until late next year at the earliest I'd have though. Ecconomy is tanked and will be even worse in 6 months once the high street starts dieing.. people have learned just how much disposable cash they have when not blowing it on stuff the really don't need. Its a scramble for cash now, before things get really bad.

Obviously not effecting the forum , still a mad scramble to blow £350 -£1000 on gallery / print houses print releases Vintage/collectible toys and comics sold really well through the lockdown, with toy prices increasing quite a bit. And I know of a few people that put their stimulus checks towards toys and comics. I think some people were really bored, so went shopping. Maybe also there's an element of people trying to make themselves feel better in an increasingly insecure and depressing world. I think some people find comfort in surrounding themselves with items of nostalgia or high value. For me, I'm still very anxious about the future, but not everyone's in the same financial boat. Some are in a yacht. Some are clinging to debris.

I think some people find comfort in surrounding themselves with items of nostalgia or high value. For me, I'm still very anxious about the future, but not everyone's in the same financial boat. Some are in a yacht. Some are clinging to debris.

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by Carl Cashman Art on Jun 15, 2020 7:07:37 GMT 1, There will be no vaccine ready until late next year at the earliest I'd have though. Ecconomy is tanked and will be even worse in 6 months once the high street starts dieing.. people have learned just how much disposable cash they have when not blowing it on stuff the really don't need. Its a scramble for cash now, before things get really bad. Obviously not effecting the forum , still a mad scramble to blow £350 -£1000 on gallery / print houses print releases We wont feel the real financial issues for a few more months yet, once furlough finishes and jobs are lost. I've been doing great sales wise during lockdown, which I'm very grateful for as my mrs is on reduced days due to our baby and I didn't qualify for financial support from the government.

Yes mate this will happen worldwide in a few months once the stimulus tap is turned off, there will be so many unemployed. Going to be a tough few years. Here in Australia we are in our first recession in 30years so a lot of people are going to find out what it's like to struggle for the first time and there' will be austerity measures just like in the UK. Here we haven't had many cases unlike the UK. 42k deaths!! It's crazy the number of deaths is that high and apparently thats not counting nursing home deaths? people should be protesting the government why these deaths have happened?

I think that actual figure is closer to 70k now, on the ONS website there are nearly 70k excess deaths already this year ! Also over 5m unemployed and that as you point out, before stimulus money runs out/stops.

70k! that's shocking it's that high. Hope it starts reducing quick although I doubt it with all the protests going on etc. countries obviously putting economies first and the number of cases and deaths will become the norm.

I suspect the UKs death rate is because we are an international hub for tourism and trade and as such had the virus here much earlier the public realised. The UK GVT fully understood the consequences of lock down timing and they are now balancing a death rate that has to be lower than our peak to appear acceptable to the public...the economic fallout will be so significant it’s not even worth contemplating the fall out. Certain industry are teetering to the point of being unrecoverable.
Unfortunately I have visibility over considerable redundancy which will activate at end of furlough too, so I suspect austerity will follow sharply and cause a greater divide of wealth.
I keep telling myself ‘I’m living through a historical time’ but it doesn’t seem to sustain my optimism.
Anyone selling Banksy?

Great reply and you also answered another question I had which it seems people are accepting the deaths and moving on with their lives, not much fight or protest from the public and they will end up paying for this stimulus for many years through cuts and taxes..
The state of economies of countries now is paramount. Also look at New Zealand, no new cases for a while then two days after fully going back to normal, they now have a few more cases.. so it will become the new norm in every country that we all live with the virus, it will be on the news and media less and less and each country will try to nip in the bud sudden outbreaks ie. Like in Beijing at the moment..

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by tab1 on Jun 17, 2020 2:32:16 GMT 1, The virus is still the same as in March , the nation has not advanced any further with restrictive measures such as in the use of developing medicines to combat the issue .
Anxiety and threat has fallen from the general public’s consciousness , These protests are distracting the public’s thought towards covid 19 and less media coverage is presented towards covid 19 and more towards the protests . Before restrictions Relaxed many people We’re ignoring all guidelines for 3 weeks prior
You would think with the pandemic in full swing and protestors ignoring guidelines and rules the police would curb and curfew the protestors .
6000 people at an illegal rave recently , surely the government know they have lost the cause to restrict infections and are just managing deaths at a level that will not cripple the nhs .
Can not control internal public order with guidelines but considering opening up international travel ?

Corona Virus effect on the art market?, by tab1 on Jun 17, 2020 2:56:59 GMT 1, Can not see why the free school meals for children over the holidays were an issue
Costs if social care intervention met for deprived Childen or at risk as of health risk to put in foster car 32 k
www.nao.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/Children-in-care1.pdf
These meal packages £4 per child per day
Schools that have been closed for months , there electric , gas and water rates With not being used therefor bills lowered with contracted 0 hours cleaners wages not now met , budgets for temporary teachers for sickness all these savings would probably fund Each school meal program, this program only applies to certain groups , do not know why no was said initially
