Noticed these new pieces from POSE and wanted to see what people think about this new direction? His style is continuously evolving. I wasnโt a huge fan of his work from earlier this year but this new style is fresh and intriguing. Kind of loving the White Bread piece. Hope he continues exploring this style and keeps pushing.

I still loved his LA show and wish it had a better reception, as i thought those pieces were all great. I still want to see the pink gorilla painting as a print.

POSE / Jordan Nickel New Works, by kuni on Nov 8, 2019 23:53:47 GMT 1, Agree. This move towards photorealistic painting is a significant departure from the chaotic graffiti aesthetic that I associate with him. I wasn't really feeling the collection from the Beyond the Streets NYC, and to some extent LA, but this feels like he's turned a corner and found a new lane that's worth exploring further. As a testament to the subjectivity of art, I was only lukewarm on the Library Street show in LA. A few of the pieces worked for me, but some of the western imagery didn't resonate.
Here's one from the LA show that I love:
With respect to these new works on IG, I had to check the materials used to see if it was painted or an actual photograph. Without knowing a lot about his technique, how do you think that he's painting such a photorealistic image? Safe to say he's using a projector? Regardless, it's impressive.

POSE / Jordan Nickel New Works, by kwatis on Nov 9, 2019 14:02:20 GMT 1, kuni UV ink is typically used in commercial CMYK screenprinting. The inks are cured using UV light so the process is incredibly fast and allows for high detail. Water-based inks air dry and solvent (oil) based inks take the longest unless the ink is modified with a curing agent. CMYK is a 4 color process using the 4 key hues, cyan, magenta, yellow and K is key for black. Each color is separated and turned into halftone (each color at its own specific angle) so that when they print the overlap to form all variations of colors. This technique is how all manner of commercial packaging and adverts are made; cheap cuz it's just 4 colors, photorealistic as it takes any image and translates it.
With all that said, you can look at the details and see the halftone dots in his IG pics (the new ones). I believe that the bread/finger and explosion were done in this manner and that the acrylic mentioned after UV ink describes the colors fields. Now whether that is acrylic ink (printed) or acrylic paint I have no idea. If you see brush strokes, layering in them, then it's painted. If it looks even across the full shape, more than likely printed.
Hope this helps kuni

Itโs not quite as skilled a technique as maybe I thought at first but still sounds like it would take a good amount of practice and skill to execute well. For some reason I assumed that he was painting it by hand a la Lucas Price style and not essentially screen printing it. I donโt see any brush strokes but then again canโt tell for sure without a better detail shot.
Regardless it looks great. Iโd love to see him bring some of his original graffiti style into these photorealistic works - might look like crap but could be something there if done right.

POSE / Jordan Nickel New Works, by kwatis on Nov 9, 2019 19:29:18 GMT 1, kuni hope I didn't spoil it and that wasn't my intention. I know that a lot of artists ambiguously list "acrylic" in their medium to avoid saying that it's printed. Painted, printed by hand or machine printed, to me it doesn't really matter as long as there result benefits from it. Jordan's newer work is definitely him broadening his abilities, techniques and processes as well as his visual iconography.

I really like the white bread piece. I appreciate the explanation because I was really curious about the composition. He does mention spray paint too, but I dont see any area that looks sprayed.

POSE / Jordan Nickel New Works, by kwatis on Nov 9, 2019 21:00:32 GMT 1, will be interesting to see where he takes this, too bad he's been mismanaged so far because he's a great talent Roger of RRock is his manager right? And POSE also has ties to Library Street Collective with Anthony. Are either of them who you're referencing when you say he's being mismanaged? I know POSE has been included in both BTS which has been massively popular, but aside from that, POSE doesn't really have exhibitions. Is that part of your reasoning? Think the last POSE exhibition was Frankly in LA thru LSC and before that it was Lemonade.

I would indeed liked to see them take more their time, assess the work and select only the best to put up a show that would of possibly had a bigger impact.
My crappy analogy would be one of a musician that keeps on releasing mixtapes and songs on his soundcloud but never takes the time to sit back and produce one album to really "shock" the scene. I might be talking out of my ass but that's been my observation

POSE / Jordan Nickel New Works, by kwatis on Nov 9, 2019 21:15:08 GMT 1, ca not talking out your ads at all. Definitely think the analogy makes sense and I never really thought about it from that perspective. Maybe by doing the peint releases every couple months he's able to fund/focus in on some of these more experimental bodies of works. Maybe he is gearing up for something and we just don't know it. Or maybe not. I will definitely continue to watch his work unfold and hope that something great comes of all of this.

I just saw his last stories on IG, it looks printed no? I'm skeptical ...

POSE / Jordan Nickel New Works, by Henry Gale Was Here on Nov 11, 2019 15:30:11 GMT 1, https://www.instagram.com/p/B4nmU0KFL7j Noticed these new pieces from POSE and wanted to see what people think about this new direction? His style is continuously evolving. I wasnโt a huge fan of his work from earlier this year but this new style is fresh and intriguing. Kind of loving the White Bread piece. Hope he continues exploring this style and keeps pushing. OOF, this is not good at all... What is he doing??

I might be talking out of my ass but that's been my observation Analogy makes perfect sense and to a large extent I agree. The print drops were a little too frequent if the goal was to create a sense of exclusivity and scarcity. Not to say that was the intended goal, but seems like that's the game you've got to play to become a commercially viable long term artist. I respect the hell out of him for not getting too comfortable with a style and for being willing to take chances and fail forward. That has to be scary as an artist - essentially fixing it when it's not broken in the hope that that's where true growth and depth comes from.
