Original inspiration for Banksy Images, by denzil on Nov 19, 2019 12:11:30 GMT 1, Banksy is a bull-shitter. In other words Banksy promoted himself blatantly by hijacking a Basquiat painted image and added massive amounts of virtue signalling text to make out he is switched on. It is so sad that Banksy resorts to judging people on appearance as I'm sure that the Barbican would be wary of any color drug enabled person who looks poor and scruffy. Basquiat came from a wealthy and connected family. Who had the money to send him to a private art school. Saint Annes school Brooklyn. ( Annual tuition as of 2019 is between $43,000 and $49,000 depending on grade level ) Basquiat made himself homeless but still had his families connections. ""In 1979, Basquiat appeared on the live public-access television show TV Party hosted by Glenn O'Brien, and the two started a friendship. Basquiat made regular appearances on the show over the next few years. That same year, Basquiat formed the noise rock band Test Pattern – which was later renamed Gray – which played at Arleen Schloss's open space, "Wednesdays at A's".[19] In October 1979, at the same club, Basquiat showed his SAMO montages using color Xerox copies of his works.
Other members of Gray included Shannon Dawson, Michael Holman, Nick Taylor, Wayne Clifford and Vincent Gallo, and the band performed at nightclubs such as Max's Kansas City, CBGB, Hurrah and the Mudd Club. In 1980, Basquiat starred in O'Brien's independent film Downtown 81, originally titled New York Beat. That same year, Basquiat met Andy Warhol at a restaurant.""en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Michel_Basquiat Basquiat was working hard, was educated, multi lingual, was talented and was connected. There is no way a black or white drug enabled street person would get anywhere near Andy Warhols table and say hello without being connected to the right people. Banksy's virtue signalling to promote himself is getting really boring. Just like to add ,The Barbican Estate does not have any Surveillance System at all ,or any Security Force ,And it is not a Private Estate So that description is total bollocks

Original inspiration for Banksy Images, by Guy Denning on Nov 23, 2019 0:08:09 GMT 1, I'm pretty sure the original photo for the flower bomber came from an anarchist press newspaper in the mid 80s. I've rattled through the collection I've still managed to hang on to but I can't find it now. Sorry! Deffo not one of the obvious ones like Class War or Black Flag. I initially thought it was from ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK (the voice of respectable moderation) but that cover had a different rioter on the front. I'll keep looking though.

I don't think anyone ever found where it was though Interesting, it just looks very cheesy and unresearched relative to most other pieces Even more interesting is that in 2017 Tyler the Creator titled his album "Flower Boy"

The Kyoto Garden*, Holland Park, West London. It opened in 1991 and "was a gift from the city of Kyoto to commemorate the long friendship between Japan and Great Britain."
Not quite the "Chinese garden" referred to in Banksy's Existencilism (photo courtesy of cosmic).
Chinese, Japanese. Close enough?

Original inspiration for Banksy Images, by met on Dec 1, 2019 7:24:39 GMT 1, [...] Not Sure on this one but its the closest i can find (May-68.-6th-arrond-Boulevard-Saint-Germain.-Students-hurl-projectiles-against-the-police.-Bruno-Barbey) [...]
There is one thing we can say with a degree of certainty about the Flower Thrower / Love is in the Air imagery featuring the single thrower (various designs used for street work, record company illustrations, fine art canvases and prints):
The direct inspiration would be another painting by Banksy himself, created circa 2000–2001 and shown at Peace is Tough — the 2001 joint exhibition with Jamie Reid held at The Arches* in Glasgow.
Not sure about the title of the piece, though it might be called Riot.
__________
Regarding the inspiration for that initial painting, it could be any number of riot scenes in a large city.
Looking however at the architecture, the style of street furniture (such as the traffic lights, signage, and 'Keep Left' traffic bollard*), and the clothing worn by the rioters (including a baseball cap and an Adidas tracksuit), my guess is that the source photo(s) was/were shot in the UK and probably around the 1990s — as opposed to Paris in May 1968.
Although not an exact fit (even when taking into account changes to the cityscape over the last two decades), the background buildings do remind me of London's Square Mile — near the Royal Exchange, the Bank of England and Mansion House.
Here's a photo showing the Bank of England along with the Royal Exchange:

Original inspiration for Banksy Images, by met on Dec 1, 2019 8:43:02 GMT 1, The original Banksy painting from circa 2000–2001 could easily be based on a composite of images.
See Duncan Phillips' photo below, taken during the poll tax riot in London on 31 March 1990.
Note the similarity between the woman wielding a steel pipe, and one of the background flower-throwers in Banksy's piece.
Other shots, the first with the same woman, and both showing that same part of Trafalgar Square:
Relevant footage of the day, sourced from the BBC archive:

Original inspiration for Banksy Images, by met on Dec 1, 2019 9:39:46 GMT 1, the background of this one from the same Poll Tax riots seems to fit the style of skyline, traffic lights etc from the original Banksy painting.
Excellent work, inefficiency of. I believe you cracked it — or at least part of it.
The tower block in the background is based on New Zealand House, visible from Trafalgar Square. The building with the columns to the left of the canvas is based on Canada House.
Whatever source photo Banksy had for that part of his painting was flipped horizontally, as I've done with the shots below.

I think that you are right sir, as you know a lot in art, street-art etc.. ( almost if it’s a painting from 2006 on Berverly. Anyway it was before the Tauton rat affair, and it really as JPS style, very colorful ! This is not a great Banksy a bit mocking simple and ordinary people and speaking about social media as MySpace ! Well, you know Banksy ... I have a mate in Liverpool, even Sincura has his artwork, and selling it, as a Banksy ! ... ( just a remark, very interesting thread, are all images have been photoshopped so ? Just asking ) instagram.com/jps_artist?igshid=18e231qhvorjq

Original inspiration for Banksy Images, by met on Dec 1, 2019 15:34:17 GMT 1, 'Roit Painting' 1997 seen for the first time at Severnshed 28th FEB 2000show info: "After moving to London in early 2000, Banksy went back to Bristol in February the same year, where he opened his first regular exhibition in his own name at the restaurant Severnshed , behind the docks. It was a mixture of stencil and acrylic. And from from April 2011 Los Angeles , MOCA Art in the streets
Thank you for the date correction. I hadn't realised the original version of this painting was so old, or that the substrate was wood.
The extent to which it was reworked since Severnshed in 2000 is interesting as well, including:
(i) reducing the contrast by greying the overall composition; (ii) making the sky completely different; (iii) painting out the top-left building silhouettes; and (iv) removing the signature and date from the bottom-right border.
In my opinion, these modifications very much strengthened the work.
And, just like Devolved Parliament, it could be that the aesthetic changes to the piece were also accompanied by a name change — from the earlier title mentioned by god’s ultimate noise, to the simpler Riot painting.
Regarding the creation date, it would be more accurate if this were amended to "1997–[year of last alteration]".
