Banksy Welcome Mat, by denzil on Jul 17, 2020 18:17:54 GMT 1, Now that I've placed my preorder in this next new batch, does anyone recommend a website that offers unique framing options and ships to the USA? I'm not sure how to frame something like this on the wall. Any pictures would be helpful as well http://instagram.com/p/CCvv5VzhFul

Banksy Welcome Mat, by tally on Jul 17, 2020 23:13:14 GMT 1, So Ive just taken mine out to take a look at. I donโt understand the negative attitude some people have towards this work. Feeling it, knowing where the materials came from, and who made it - it radiates such power. In many ways itโ might be one of the most incredible pieces of art Iโve experienced, and I canโt believe I own it.
Been thinking about how to frame it, and thought about a simple tray frame would work - no glass, so that me/my friends/whoever comes across it can touch and feel the piece.
What do people think?

I'm torn on that sentiment. On one hand, I agree. On the other, you pay 500 pounds plus whatever to get it framed and look at it in your air conditioned house while eating a warm meal after a clean shower. To me, it evokes the same feeling of privilege and wrong priorities that I had when driving through skid row on the way to see shepard fairey.
I hear ya my friend. I buy and sell art frequently, but this will stay with me forever. And I know that every time someone experiences it, we can discuss itโs meaning and origins. Unlike so much contemporary art (Iโm a manager at two contemporary art galleries in London) this work is accessible to everyone. Surly this is what all great art should aim to achieve? Promote debate, affect its audience, effect change. Xx

Banksy Welcome Mat, by teabaggins on Jul 17, 2020 23:44:45 GMT 1, Here is a mockup of how Iโm framing mine. Reclaimed boat wood and museum glass. Like the table on here I think it needs something heavier than the contemporary frames.

Unlike so much contemporary art (Iโm a manager at two contemporary art galleries in London) this work is accessible to everyone. Surly this is what all great art should aim to achieve? Promote debate, affect its audience, effect change. Xx It's accessible, but it's also a mat (that is traditionally used to wipe someone's dirty shoes on) that was made by someone in a refugee camp with an actual life vest that a person wore at one point to get to that camp. I think it's extremely dark and unsettling the more I think about it. Again, to each their own, but I think I just now understand why I didn't go for one initially.
Again - Iโm with to you a point. But, I purchased the work knowing all these things. The work a) financially supports people desperately In need (authenticated by love welcomes, who share the social and economic value and impact of this process) b) raises awareness of the plight/trauma of refugees and c) these constitute parts are combined materially tto create a work of art that is aesthetically unique and conceptually engaging, visceral and political - Itโs doing absolutely everything art should do. Iโm perplexed by the objection.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by drip on Jul 18, 2020 0:19:53 GMT 1, It's a weird one. It certainly makes you think about the materials used, the people that made it, and the story behind it. More so than a lot of other art editions out there. It's a physical reminder of the hardship faced by many that're literally risking their lives for a better, safer life, so I completely understand if people feel uncomfortable with it in their home, second home, or third home.
But you can also say, it wasn't made in a sweat shop, the makers are benefiting through this process, and people are being helped through the sale of these mats. Awareness of their situation and circumstance is absolutely being raised, and will continue to be raised each and every time a visitor asks, "Why do you have a door mat behind bulletproof glass?"
Personally, I think as long as they are treated and viewed with all due deference (and not fetishized in some weird or tasteless way), as well as being aesthetically pleasing, they can be a useful conversation starter on a topic that absolutely needs to be talked about and addressed.
Plus also it's a bargain Banksy. And a whole load of people are far better off because of Banksy putting his noggin or name to this, than they would be if they were only selling "non art" rugs and place mats. Good is coming from this.
I think.

Thank you for this articulate and considered perspective. Youโve managed to frame the work in ways I have struggled to.

A galzillion percent. It cripples me to think this work might be sold for profit...and Iโve done it plenty of times with other works. Enjoying this discussion nonetheless x

Banksy Welcome Mat, by drip on Jul 18, 2020 0:41:13 GMT 1, I think this should make us feel uncomfortable to some degree. If you knew the story of its conception and construction, and you weren't made to feel uneasy, even slightly, then that's probably not ideal. But while it might be born as a result of human hardship, it's also a product of survival, of hope. And while I wouldn't want death or misery on my wall, I'll take hope.

It's dark, but it wasn't made with a life jacket a human wore. Can you see a difference between a life jacket discarded on a beach by a live human being, and a life jacket taken from a corpse in the sea? Have you ever bought clothes from a charity shop? Because you wouldn't believe how many items are in there because someone that once wore it has died.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by drip on Jul 18, 2020 1:05:47 GMT 1, Can you see a difference between a life jacket discarded on a beach by a live human being, and a life jacket taken from a corpse in the sea? Have you ever bought clothes from a charity shop? Because you wouldn't believe how many items are in there because someone that once wore it has died. I'm not sure how you can distinguish where a life jacket came from when it washes up on the beach. And I buy art from charity shops and estate auctions, and I'm well aware it could have come from a dead person's home. So, when you buy art from an estate sale, do you give thought to whether you're benefitting from someone's death? A family's grief? Or do you think you're gaining a nice piece of art you're interested in, while also putting some money towards a grieving family, who might then put that money to good use (or could be drugs), maybe towards funeral or headstone costs? Good coming from something bad, you both benefit, that kind of thing.
And regarding the life jackets. I'm taking the makers at their word.
But anyway, we all get to pick and choose what we surround ourselves with, what we like, what we can live with, etc. It would be very boring if our homes were all the same. Burglars would find it terribly mundane.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Gentle Mental on Jul 18, 2020 4:12:48 GMT 1, In a way itโll be good if these mats sells out for good - as that means no more families forced to leave their homes, to need these jackets, to live these tragedic lives.
Letโs hope they run out of materials!
In that sense, I wonโt mind flippers making a ton more for them!

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Matt 2 ttaM on Jul 18, 2020 6:06:38 GMT 1, I was lucky to get one on this batch and am happy I didnt pull the trigger on one from the 2nd market, but damn, I didnt realize that being selected simply placed you in a smaller pool of buyers and that you arent guaranteed one even then.
I waited 3hrs for my wife to get up and ask if she knew of any friends/family that would be interested as 2 were allowed to be ordered. But in the end just ordered the one! Will probably go nicely with the WOH stuff.
I wonder if sales on eBay will soften due to this being confirmed as more of an open run, I mean thereโs alot of optimists selling on eBay hoping for some pretty ridiculous numbers.

Banksy Welcome Mat, by met on Jul 18, 2020 10:43:00 GMT 1, I'm torn on that sentiment. Xx Being able to notice and take pleasure in the small things, including people's choices of words, is a blessing for me.
Yours was an inspired way of highlighting the distinction between the oft-confused terms, "affect" and "effect".

Promote debate, affect its audience, effect change. Xx Being able to notice and take pleasure in the small things, including people's choices of words, is a blessing for me. Yours was an inspired way of highlighting the distinction between the oft-confused terms, "affect" and "effect".

Banksy Welcome Mat, by jhavisen on Jul 19, 2020 9:52:52 GMT 1, I hope this is OK: I previously bought a mat from the expensive second market. Now i got picked in the lottery, and i bought a new one, however i actually don't have the need for that one.
So i am selling one pre-ordered for cost + 100 pounds. Think this is a pretty fair price?

A fairer thing to do would have been to not buy the mat at all and let someone else have the chance.

Yes...if you plan to send Love Welcomes the profit you intend to make as a donation. I jest (slightly) but I do feel that thereโs something morally questionable if the proceeds of the sales are not going directly to the intended beneficiaries/cause. I have held on in the hope of securing one from source for exactly this reason. We donโt all share the same moral compass though and your offer is โbetterโ than some of the others Iโve seen floating around/on eBay. Ultimately, itโs yours to do with as you see fit but I think youโll find mixed reactions (and likely some PMs to purchase - sadly).

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Matt 2 ttaM on Jul 19, 2020 16:46:41 GMT 1, I made a hi-res updated museum style tag based on the photo of the tag in the GDP shop if anyone would like it. Size of the actual piece has been updated to reflect the size of the mats being shipped vs. the one originally on display. Itโs not an exact copy as far as the font goes, but itโs close. It is 4โ wide x 6.5โ tall. If anyone would like the original illustrator file to modify this further let me know.
Bravo! I was just mulling doing this, I wouldnt mind the illustrator file if its no trouble. Thank you either way! This is great!

Banksy Welcome Mat, by Grillocracy on Jul 22, 2020 15:52:19 GMT 1, For those who have had these professionally framed, any idea how they are connected to the back of the frame? Seems like a lot of weight to hold up.

I purchased one also and have absolutely no expectation of it arriving with me any time soon. I have in my head that it will be at some point in the next 6 months.
