The Brooklyn Museum will present the French street artist and photographer’s largest solo museum exhibition so far in the fall. The exhibition will feature JR’s monumental mural The Chronicles of New York City, which features more than 1,000 people photographed and interviewed in the Big Apple during the summer of 2018. The exhibition, called “JR: Chronicles,” will fill 20,000 square feet of the museum’s Great Hall and range from the artist’s politically engaged projects in Berlin and on the US-Mexico border to early works like Expo 2 Rue, where he documented fellow graffiti artists in action and pasted photocopies of the images in the streets of Paris. This after showing with Pace and at SFMoMA until april 2020, plus an oscar nomination, and and emmy nomination. Seems like this guy is having a massive year. Excited to see what body or bodies of work he decides to show.

Over the past two decades, JR has expanded the meaning of public art through his ambitious projects that give visibility and agency to a broad spectrum of people around the world. Showcasing murals, photographs, videos, films, dioramas, and archival materials, JR: Chronicles is the first major exhibition in North America of works by the French-born artist. Working at the intersections of photography, social engagement, and street art, JR collaborates with communities by taking individual portraits, reproducing them at a monumental scale, and wheat pasting them—sometimes illegally—in nearby public spaces.

This soaring multimedia installation traces JR’s career from his early documentation of graffiti artists as a teenager in Paris to his large-scale architectural interventions in cities worldwide to his more recent digitally collaged murals that create collective portraits of diverse publics. The centerpiece of the exhibition is The Chronicles of New York City, a new epic mural of more than one thousand New Yorkers that is accompanied by audio recordings of each person’s story. All of the projects on view honor the voices of everyday people and demonstrate JR’s ongoing commitment to community, collaboration, and civic discourse.

JR: Chronicles is curated by Sharon Matt Atkins, Director of Exhibitions and Strategic Initiatives, and Drew Sawyer, Phillip Leonian and Edith Rosenbaum Leonian Curator, Photography, Brooklyn Museum.

fifteen years, including his first major collaborative project, Portrait of a Generation (2004–6);
Face 2 Face (2007), which features giant portrait diptychs of Israelis and Palestinians, face
to face, in eight Palestinian and Israeli cities; Women Are Heroes (2008–9), featuring images
of the eyes of women gazing back at their communities in numerous countries, including
Brazil, India, and Kenya; the global participatory art project Inside Out (2011–ongoing); and
The Gun Chronicles: A Story of America (2018), a video mural that gives a face to the full
and complex spectrum of views on guns in the United States.
